Lesson Plan- Observation #2
Subject/Grade Level: Science/5th grade
Unit Topic: Physical Properties of Matter (Spiraled Content)
Lesson Goal:
Students will have an understanding of how adding and removing heat can change matter
as well as see an example of condensation.
Lesson Title or Topic: Heating and Cooling
Estimated length of the lesson: 1 hr 15 minutes
TEKS Standards:
(5) Matter and energy. The student knows that matter has measurable physical properties
and those properties determine how matter is classified, changed, and used. The student is
expected to:
(B) predict the changes caused by heating and cooling such as ice becoming liquid water
and condensation forming on the outside of a glass of ice water;
Student Learning Objectives:
Science
o During an investigation, I will learn how adding and removing heat can change
matter and how condensation will form outside a water bottle.
Language Arts
o We will talk with content vocabulary to help build our academic understanding in
this science investigation.
Grouping: Throughout the lesson, students will work as a class and as well as in groups.
Materials:

Explore Student Guide (per group)

Explore Student Journal (per student)
Part I: Adding Heat
3 chocolate chip pieces (per group)
3 mini marshmallows (per group)
3 gummy candies (per group)
small piece of glue stick per group
30 mL of water (per group)
1 timer (per group)
1 disposable aluminum muffin pan (per group)
a sunny location, hot plate or heat lamp as alternative (per group)
Part II: Removing Heat
the items in the muffin pan from Part 1
1 ice chest or freezer (for cold box) (per class)
Part III: Condensation
2 bottles of colored water (per group)
1 hand lens (per group)
Consumable
Part I: Adding Heat
1 ice cube (per group)
Part III: Condensation
1 white paper towel (per group)

Instructional Procedures:

Introduction: The student teacher will review content that was covered over the course
of the unit. The student teacher will have students go to the carpet. The student teacher
will have a plastic ball, and students will toss the ball to different people in the class and
the student who gets the ball will have to answer a question about the content that was
reviewed.
1. The student teacher will have students review for about 5-7 minutes and then
students will be asked to clear their desks and prepare for the lab. For the lab
students will work as teams in their groups.
2. When everyone is ready, as a class we will go over the lab rules.
3. The student teacher will have students pull out their science journals and the
student teacher will pass out a Student Journal Paper, which is where students
will record there results and findings. Students will be given the materials
needed for the lab.
Body of the Lesson:
Part I:
1. As a class, the instructions will be reviewed.
2. The students will complete the first two columns in Part I of the Explore
Student Journal as they observe their items (ice, chocolate chips, glue stick,
gummy candies, marshmallows, and water). In the first columns, the
questions include, what is the current state of matter, and predict change.
3. Students will put the muffin pan with the 6 different materials under the heat
lamp for 5 minutes.
4. Students will observe and record the changes to each item on Part I of the
Explore Student Journal.
5. As a class, we will discuss what everyone recorded and their thoughts.
Part II:
1. Students will make predictions on Part II of the Explore Student Journal as
they observe their items again.
2. The student teacher will place the muffin pans into the ice chest.
3. Students will record the changes to the items after the items have been in the
cooler for 5 minutes. Students will record the changes in the third column on
Part II of the Explore Student Journal.
4. As a class, we compare the items from the heated state and then the cooled
state.
Part III
1. Students will get to observe a bottle of colored water on the table and wait for
the condensation to form. Students will then record observations on Part III of
the Explore Student Journal.
Closure: The student teacher will close the lesson with reviewing the concepts that
students investigated in the lab. Such as removing heat and adding heat to matter. As an
exit ticket, students will be given a sticky note, and they have to write about what they
learned in the lab. Sentence stem will be given to students, I learned in the lab.
Assessment:
I will observe students as a formative assessment, as students are working together in their
groups conducting their science investigation. I will also use the students explore journal to as an
assessment.
Accommodations / Modifications:
A sentence stem will be given to the class but its to accommodate LEP students.
Heterogenous grouping in the science lab investigation.
Students can assist their other group members by reading the instructions and questions
for those students who are SPED.
