Lesson Plan - Observation #1

Subject/Grade Level: Math/ 5th grade

Unit Topic: Extending Whole Number Multiplication and Division

Lesson Goal:

Students will have an understanding of how to solve two-digit and three-digit

multiplication algorithms through word problems.

Lesson Title or Topic: Multiplying whole numbers

Estimated length of lesson: 45 minutes- 1hr

TEKS Standards:

(3) Number and operations. The student applies mathematical process standards to

develop and use strategies and methods for positive rational number computations in order to

solve problems with efficiency and accuracy. The student is expected to:

(B) multiply with fluency a three-digit number by a two-digit number using the standard

algorithm;

Student Learning Objectives:

Math
Using the standard algorithm, I will learn to multiply three-digit and two-digit

multiplication algorithms in word problem form.

Language Arts
We will talk with content vocabulary to help build our academic understanding in

this lesson.

Grouping: Throughout the lesson, students will work independently as well as work in pairs.

1
Materials:

- Expo Markers
- Pencils
- Exit Ticket
- Dice
- Motivation Math Workbook
- Math Journal

Instructional Procedure:

Introduction: The student teacher will review with students the multiplication of three -

digit and two-digit algorithms. The student teacher will review with students the anchor

chart in their math journals that was done in the previous lesson the day before.
1. Students will then proceed to review with an activity. Students will be paired up,

and each pair is given a dice. Each student will be asked take out their dry erase

marker and then they will roll the dice to create a three-digit and then a two-digit

number to create a multiplication algorithm.

2. They will write, the number they rolled on the desk, and then they will solve for

it.
3. Each student will get their turn, and this will continue for a few more rounds.
4. After a few rounds, the student teacher will have students wrap up the activity,

and then proceed to the main concept of the lesson.

Body of the Lesson:
1. I do- The student teacher will have students turn to page 40 in their Motivation

Math Workbooks. In the Motivation Math Book, students will be looking at math

word problems that include three-digit and two-digit multiplication algorithms. I

will model problems #1 and #3 on page 40.

2. We Do- As a class, we will look at problems #5 and #6. We will read them

together, and as a class we will solve the word problems.

3. You Do - Students will then work on problems #2 and #4, and they will be

given a couple of minutes to solve these two problems independently. After

2
finishing their problems, students will then turn and talk to their neighbor and

discuss the answers they got. As a class, we will discuss what answers the

students received.
Closure: The student teacher will close the lesson with reviewing major points that were

covered throughout the lesson. Such as reading the word problems carefully, and

identifying important words. As well as aligning the digits in the correct order to answer

the algorithm correctly. As an exit ticket, students will be given a word problem similar to

the ones that they worked on in the lesson. This ticket will be picked up at the end of the

class period.

Assessment:

I will observe students as a formative assessment when they are participating in the

activity that reviews the multiplication of two-digit and three-digits algorithms. I will also

see if students get an understanding of three-digit and two-digit multiplication algorithms

through word problems specifically when they are working independently, and when they

submit their exit ticket.

Accommodations/Modifications:

For the SPED students, they will be given a math chart that contains a multiplication

chart.
Ms. Dunn (Cooperating Teacher) will pull the students with the need for modifications to

sit at the horseshoe table during independent practice. As they sit at the table, Ms. Dunn

will read the word problems to these students.

If needed, these students may work out the word problems on the desk with expo markers

as they sit with Ms. Dunn.
