OGDEN's BASIC ENGLISH (830 Words)

If one were to take the 25,000 word Oxford Pocket English Dictionary and remove the
redundancies and eliminate the difficult words that can be explained by putting together
simpler words, we find that 90% of the concepts in that dictionary can be described with just
850 words. The shortened list helps the learners to learn spelling, and communicate in
perfectly good and simple English in all contexts.

2. able - (usually followed by `to') having the necessary means or skill or know-how or
authority to do something
3. about - (of quantities) imprecise but fairly close to correct
4. account - a record or narrative description of past events
5. acid - any of various water-soluble compounds having a sour taste and capable of
turning litmus red and reacting with a base to form a salt
6. across - to the opposite side
7. act - behave in a certain manner; show a certain behaviour; conduct or comport
oneself
8. addition - the arithmetic operation of summing; calculating the sum of two or more
