Introduction
This special instruction outlines the basic procedures to replace the fuel filter system in certain 320D and 323D
Excavators and Mobile Hydraulic Power Units. The first section deals with the three filter system, and the last section
deals with the four filter system.
Do not perform any of the procedures until you have read the information in this publication. Understand and perform
all of the safety instructions and information. Safety instructions and information are associated with the removal,
handling, repair, and installation of the fuel filter systems.
Also, refer to the appropriate Parts Manual, Operation and Maintenance Manual, Disassembly and Assembly Manual,
and Service Manual.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can

cause a fire. To help prevent possible injury, turn the start switch off
when changing fuel filters or water separator elements. Clean up fuel
spills immediately.
NOTICE
Do not use a tool in order to remove the fuel filter. Attempting to

remove the fuel filter with a filter wrench or a filter strap could
damage the locking ring.
NOTICE
Fuel filter differential pressure must be monitored. An electrical

monitoring device must be connected to a differential pressure switch
mounted in the fuel filters priming pump adapter plate.
NOTICE
Do not allow dirt to enter the fuel system. Thoroughly clean the area
around a fuel system component that will be disconnected. Fit a
suitable cover over disconnected fuel system component.
NOTICE
Do not fill fuel filter housings with fuel before installing elements.
Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system

components.
NOTICE
A primary fuel filter and/or water separator is recommended and

should be installed between the fuel tank and the engine fuel inlet.
After changing the fuel filter(s), always prime the fuel system (if
equipped with a priming pump) to remove air bubbles from the

system.
Preparing the Machine for Servicing

1. Move the machine to level ground. The ground must support the weight of the machine. Personal injury or death
can result if the surface below the machine cannot support the weight of the machine.

The servicing position of an Excavator is shown in this illustration. The bucket is flat on the ground. The stick is in a vertical position.
2. Put the machine in the servicing position. The bucket must rest flat on the ground after the boom is lowered.
3. Position the boom on the ground. Refer to the Disassembly & Assembly manual for the machine.
4. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for your machine.
5. Remove the key which starts the machine. Secure the cab.
6. Disconnect all power and ground leads from the batteries in order to avoid possible damage to the electronic
components.
