CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

One of our greatest problems especially the farmers are the pests

specifically the insects. They cause us many troubles. Aside from they eat the plants

from which we get our food for our survival they also make farmers work more difficult.

Do you know what effect this kind of phenomenon will bring us?

We all know that rice is our staple food and the most important. It connotes

survival, and the absence, of it would mean starvation. If the insects will destroy it

continuously, time may come that we will experience the scarcity of rice. On the other

hand, these pests also affect the fruits and vegetables from which we get the nutrients

that are needed by out body and from which many people get their income. As

concerned students and citizens, we investigated and researched a solution to this

problem the pesticide from Chili, Orange Peels or Cinnamon.

It is just very simple to make. We can do it in lesser time, lesser expenses, and

lesser work but with great assurance that it is effective though we cannot say that this

is totally safe and has no harmful effects. However, with proper use and carefulness,

this will be a big help for us all. This study aimed to know and prone that Chili, Orange

Peel or Cinnamon pesticide has the potential to replace the pesticide we now have.

This study also wants to find out if the said herbal solution will really be as effective as

the proven insecticides usually used by the famous. This study is advantageous

because it is eco-friendly. It cannot harm us as long as we use it properly because it

was made up from plants.

A pesticide is a substance or mixture of substances used to kill a pest. A

pesticide may be a chemical substance, biological agent (such as a virus or bacteria),

antimicrobial, disinfectant or device used against any pest. Pests include insects, plant

pathogens, weeds, mollusks, birds, mammals, fish, nematodes (roundworms) and

microbes that compete with humans for food, destroy property, spread or are a vector

for disease or cause a nuisance.

Ants can transmit infectious bacteria, including Salmonella and

Staphylococcus. It has been reported at least as far back as 1914 (Wheeler) that if an

ant walks through an area densely populated with infectious bacteria, they track it

along in quantities large enough to show up in a Petri dish. Many of the typical

invasives have been found to carry such pathogens (pharaoh ants, and fire ants).

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to determine the effectivity of chili (Capsicum annuum), orange

peels (Citrus sinensis), cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) as an organic insecticide.

Specifically, this study aims to:

Compare the effectivity of chili, orange peels and cinnamon essential oil in

warding off ants.

Significance of the Study

This can help stop spreading diseases from pests because ants can carry

bacteria and might transfer them to food or an open wound. This study will provide

other people with alternatives to commercial insecticides. This can also help the

farmers to control the increasing amount of pest because ants are a serious pest to

humans and livestock.

Delimitations of the Study

The researchers only used chili, orange peels and cinnamon essential oil in

making the organic insecticide. The organic insecticide was sprayed only on ants

(Formicidae)
