Chapter Performance and Characteristics of the Instrument

ATTENTION: Reliably earthing wire shall be provided for the instrument power socket.

1.1 Applications

The instrument is applicable for the determination of the calorific values of solid or liquid
combustibles in the coal and petroleum products in the fields of coal, electricity, paper
making, petrochemicals, cement, agriculture, animal husbandry, scientific research and
schools.

1.2 Environment Requirement

aThe instrument should be located in the area free of direct sunshine


b Power: AC220V10% 50Hz the power socket should be properly earthed
( 500VA ,well-functioned UPS power is recommended) .
cCement working table or other stable and flat working table should be used ( it is
suggested not to use wooden table)
dThe lab ambient temperature should be kept constant ( in accordance with the China
national specificationvariation <1 within half an hour, and < 5 within 24 hours,
the difference between the ambient temperature and external barrel temperature
should be less than 1.5
eThe lab should be free of intensive heat source or cross ventilation. Avoid too many
people in the room
fWhen air conditioner is installed, the air speed should be set at Low level, and avoid the
air flow formed during the air conditioner operation to blow directly to the instrument
direct air blow the air conditioner (It is suggested to operate the air conditioner
continuously within 24 h.

1.4 Characteristics of the Instrument

1.4.1 Stable performance


After long-time continuous operation, the instrument performance remains stable and
reliable with extremely low fault rate.
1.4.2 Accuracy and repeatability
The test results are accurate and reliable.

1.4.3 Simple operation


a. Only one switch is used to control the whole instrument
b. Whole-process Chinese prompt is provided to finish the test as prompted .
c. The software has good fault tolerance. There is no need to worry about the
misoperation.
d. Calculation and printing of the net and gross calorific values can be done
conveniently
e. It allows for repeated sample testing, automatic error diagnosis and automatic
averaging the effective results
f. Rich query functions.

1.4.4 Expert Diagnosis System


In the process of measurement, the instrument is provided with self-diagnosis
function to accurately diagnose the power, probe, control line, temperature testing
card, oxygen bomb (short circuit and open circuit) and printer for proper connection,
and clearly prompt the user to ensure easy maintenance and normal operation of the
instrument.

1.4.5 Asynchronous multi-control


SDACM-IIIb calorimeter is provided with the combination of single-control,
double-control and 3-control functions, which will work independently without
mutual interference, with the performance equal to that of single-control
SDACM-IIIb of the equivalent quantity.

1.4.6 Asynchronous balance interface


The sample weighing at any time and automatic data transmission is realized by
on-line connection between the balance interface and weighing software.

1.4.7 Practical date processing


Data processing system with standard format is provided for easy calculation and
printing of the coal quality assay data and reports.
Chapter II Instrument Makeup and Working Principle

2.1 Makeup

SDACM-IIIb series calorimeter mainly consists of SDACM-IIIb thermostatic tank


SDYD oxygen bomb, SDCYQ automatic oxygenator, SD measurement and control
interface card and control card , SD measurement and control software, computer and
printerrefer to Fig.2 .

2.1.1 SDACM-IIIb thermostatic tank

The schematic diagram of the SDACM-IIIb thermostatic tank is shown in Fig.2-2.

2.1.2 SD

1 The schematic diagram of the oxygenator is shown in Fig.2-6

Simple structure, easy operation, safe and reliable.

Single-head oxygen bomb, casing pressure method id applied for ignitor fuse bolting to
ensure easy, safe and reliable operation.

2 Instrument Working Procedures

Start the computer to enter the measurement and control software. When the test is
ready (oxygen bomb is properly connected, test parameters correctly input and the
water temperature in the internal and external barrels is up to the specification), the
system will automatically enter the test status. The temperature data is accurately
acquired through the probe and measurement and control electric circuit. The whole
test procedures are finished automatically based on the program convention and the
testing results will be calculated, printed out and saved automatically. During the
testing, in case of abnormal operation of some part of the system, clear prompt will be
shown for easy maintenance.

Chapter III Instrument Installation and Debugging

Attentions
During the installation and debugging of the instrument, the operator should

During the water addition, the fibers or metallic wires shall not fall into the

When the instrument is being installed , the chassis shall be earthed reliably

3 1 Preparation prior to the installation

a. The lab environment shall be in line with the requirement as described in Chapter
1.2
b. Check the instrument configuration against the shipping list to see if they are intact
c. Prepare about 30Kg distilled water or deionized water
d. Provide the analytical balance with 0.1mg sensibility and industrial balance with
1g sensibility and proper drying vessel;
e. Provide oxygen cylinder with oxygen and pressure up to the standard.
f. Provide the basic tools such as tweezers, scissors, spanners, screw drivers, pliers and
horn scoops, etc.

3 1
Arrangement and connection

a Generally speaking, the instrument arrangement should be as follows: Computer


(mainframe, display and keyboard)in the middle, printer on the left and Thermostatic
tank on the right so as to facilitate the experimental staff operation. The computer,
thermostatic tank and printer should be placed steadily.
b Open the computer back cover , insert the interface card into the computer mother
board slot and screw fasten the CRD card E-ring to avoid interface card loose. Upon
careful check, cover the computer.
c The connection of the signal wire between the computer and printer is shown in
Fig.3-1. After check, fasten the bolts of all signal connecting wires.
d Check the power socket fuse box of the thermostatic tank to see if the fuse is
installed, and if there is any short circuit between the shell and live wire and zero line
and check the voltage in the instrument installation area and the instrument shell to see
if it is earthed reliably
e Switch on the power, start the computer and get ready to install the measurement
and control software

3 2 Install the PCI card driver

a. PCI interface card needs no jumper and the address can be assigned automatically. The
barrel number is defined as follows: The first interface card close to the display card is
1# barrel, the second interface card close to the display card is 2# barrel ,and so on. If
there are sufficient PCI slots, generally the first PCI slot close to the display card is not to
be used.
b. If there are many PCI interface cards, it is suggested to install the cards one by one, i.e.
first insert one interface card boot the computer install the driver as prompted by
the system power off the computer insert another interface card boot the
computer install the driver as prompted by the system.
c. In case PCI card and ISA card are simultaneously inserted into the computer
mainframethe system will preferentially identify the ISA card . For example, when
ISA card means 1# barrel, the first PCI card close to the display card means 2# barrel.
d. After the driver is installed , check in accordance with the procedures as follows
Start set up control panel system device manager Sundyclick +to view
the card identification name.

3 3 Software installation

The measurement and control software of SDACM-IIIb heat calorimeter is saved in a


CD-ROM. For installation, please insert the CD-ROM marked with Measurement And
Control Software Of SDACM-IIIb Heat Calorimeterinto the CD-ROM drive , find the
CD-ROM drive through Explorer and open it before you can start the installation
either manually or automatically as follows:

1. Automatic installation
 Run the Sundy.exe file ,the computer will be automatically rebooted several
times during the installation .One has to run repeatedly Sundy.exe file until the
shortcut icon SDACM-IIIb Heat Calorimeter is shown on the desktop
 Upon the installation of the database MSDE ,right click the icon in the taskbar
on the lower right of the desktop MSSQL Server open SQL Server -
click Start /Continue - select "When start OS, automatically start service "

2.Manual installation
Since the measurement and control system of the SDACM-IIIb Heat
Calorimeter consists of measurement and control software main program
and data management( as described in details in Chapter IV and
V) ,independent from each other for the manual installation , the necessary
modules and main program of the measurement and control software are to be
separately installed as follows:
 Install the necessary modules
Attention: When manual installation is selected, Necessary module
shall be installed first. During the module installation, if it is
prompted to Reboot the computer, the computer is to be
rebooted before carry out the next procedure .

Product measurement and control software \Install the necessary module
\dcom98.exe file
Install the measurement and control software
In case the above modules are installed previously, direct run CD-ROM\
Product measurement and control software \Sundy.exe .During the installation,
one need only select Next step or YES, the program can automatically
finish the whole installation process after setting the installation option.

Software operating environment requirement: Windows98Windows2000


Windows XP, memory 128Mbwith basic frequency 1GHz.

3 1 Installation and use of the automatic oxygenator

Installation and inspection

a. Prior to the installation, carefully check the components to see if they are fastened,
which should be free of appearance damage or crashes .
b. Connect the oxygenator through the oxygenation duct with the relief valve and oxygen
cylinder and tighten all nuts
c. Open the master valve of the oxygen cylinder , adjust the air pressure adjusting screw
rod to enable the low pressure gauge to be pointed ed to 2.83Mpa, then the whole
air circuit should be free of any leakage, otherwise reinstall the oxygenator until it is
normal.
d. Put the oxygen bomb into the oxygenator for trial oxygenation, then, there should be
free of any air leakage and the operation should be free and relaxedand the indicated
value of pressure gauge on the oxygenator should be in line with that of the low
pressure gauge on the relief valve. The whole installation inspection is over.

Use

Open the valve of the oxygen cylinderThe oxygen pressure indicated by the high
pressure gauge of the relief valve should be > 5Mpaput the oxygen bomb onto the
oxygenator oxygen bomb locating tray to direct the oxygen bomb head at the
oxygenator air tap, press down the oxygenator handle. The required pressure is 2.8
3MPa (as indicated by the low pressure gauge ), oxygenation duration 15 60 seconds.
Slowly release the handle after sufficient oxygenation. Take out the oxygen bomb, then
one can see the valve core projected up, indicating the oxygen bomb oxygenated.

Precautions
a. Each day when the experiment is over, close the master oxygen valve and bleed the
oxygen from the air circuitMethodclose the oxygen cylinder valve , oxygenate the
oxygen bomb until the oxygen pressure gauge indicates zero.
b. No fire in the area where the oxygenator and oxygen cylinder are put.
c. Bending or twisting of the oxygenation duct is forbidden.
d. Regularly check the pressure gauge on the oxygenator and low pressure gauge on the
relief valve to see if the indicated values are in line with each other
e. No grease is to be used for the connecting nuts in the whole air circuit
f. After oxygenation, slowly release the oxygenator handle.

3 2 The use of the oxygen bomb

Check up prior to the use

Ex-works strict quality inspection is done for the oxygen bomb, there is no need for the
user to dismount the oxygen bomb, yet the user is to check as follows:
a. Check the oxygenation nozzle for any looseness;
b. Check the two electrode rods to see if they are loose or short connected with other
parts of the oxygen bomb; check the fire damper (round stainless steel piece) for
tightness, check the crucible support for proper fixing ;
c. Check the air inlet to see if it is freebomb core
d. Check the screws and ring seal on the oxygen bomb barrel and oxygen bomb lid to
see if there is any foreign material
e. After oxygenation, put the bomb into the water and see if there is any bubble going
up. If the bubbles go up , it indicates that the bomb is air leakedthe ring seal has to
be replaced
f. Check the appearance to see if there is any crash.

How to use the oxygen bomb correctly

a. Hang the oxygen bomb core onto the bomb support
b. Put the dried crucible onto the balance weighing tray to weight the mass. When
electronic balance is used, directly zero setting and taring can be done
c. Put the well mixed sample(with clean spoon) into the weighed and tared crucible ,
record the mass (2 pieces of benzoic acidcoal sample 10.1goil sample 0.2
0.7g
d. Put the crucible containing samples onto the oxygen bomb crucible support
e. Connect the ignition wire to the crucible support ( oxygen bomb electrode rod) and
tighten the nut to keep the ignition wire close to or slightly in contact with the
sample surface
f. The ignition wire shall not contact the crucible. In case of coal sample, the ignition
wire shall not be inserted into the coal, it should be bent in the circular form and kept
close to the sample surface
g. After the sample put in and ignition wire properly installed, stably put the bomb core
into the oxygen bomb cylinder containing 10ml distilled water, tighten the bomb lid
and put it stably onto the oxygenator for oxygenation
h. After testing, bleed the left-over air from the oxygen bomb through the air vent.

Attentions
a. Fire damper to short circuit the two electrode rod is prohibited,
b. Each time prior to mounting of the ignition wire, the ignition wire left over on

the junk ring or other foreign materials on the electrode rod
c. Over-pressure ogygenation (normal pressure is 2.8 3Mpa is prohibited, the
oxygenation duration should be relatively similar generally 15 60 seconds
d. Dont screw the oxygen bomb lid too tight , just to screw it in the right position
with a little more force
e. After the experiment is over, clean the bomb barrel and lid and dry them in the
air
f. Regular quality check is to be done to the oxygen bomb, and hydraulic
test( oxygen bomb may sent to Sundy Company for testing) should be made
minimum once a year.

3 3 On-line experiment

After the hardware and software are installed, on-line experiment may start .When there
is nothing abnormal, the installation is deemed as completed .Otherwise, check item by
item the hardware and software installation in accordance with the troubleshooting
method, correctly solve the problem or reinstall.
Attention: After the instrument debugging, components movement or pulling of the signal
wire is prohibited to avoid any failures.

4 Start-up and Exit of the Measuring and Control Software

4 1 Start- up

The software can be started in the following way:


Boot the computer to directly start the measuring and control software of SDACM-IIIb
Calorimeter

Way I : When the software is properly installed, shortcut is set up automatically on the
Windows desktop and menu item will be set up in Windows program package.
Directly click shortcut icon SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter or start from Start
->Program ->SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter.
Way II: Set item Enter Windows Automatic Run Program in the System Setup of the
measuring and control software to automatic start the measuring and control software
of SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter the nest time when you boot the Windows.

4 2 Exit

The measuring and control software is to be closed before exit the Windows or cut-off the
computer to ensure the experiment data and parameters file not destroyed.
Set Cut off the Computer when Exit in the in the System Setup of the measuring and
control software to automatically cut off the computer when exit the program.

2 Description of Functions of the Main Forms

The main forms of the measuring and control software for SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter
mainly consists of shortcut button bar ,forms and status bar.
The forms for SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter system ready to work is shown in Fig. 4-1
The forms for SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter system under testing is shown in Fig. 4-2.

Attention When the computer is ON never pull out the plug board card to
avoid damage to the computer and the corresponding line CRD cards .

Only the right user and input passwords (also called Permission ) are selected
can you enter the system setting .The ex-works user name is defaulted as Sundy
without password. When the user administrator has not set the password, one can
automatically login System Setting .

 Description of the system basic setting options

1. Testing method: Regnault-Pfaundler method (testing time: 25 min.), China national


standard methodtesting time: 15 min.
 Regnault-Pfaundler methodtesting time: 25 minutesincl. inner barrel
temperature balancing time 5min, initial stage 5minmain stage 10min, final stage
5min.
 China national standard method: calorific value15 minincl. inner barrel
temperature balancing time 5min , main stage 10min) heat capacity 35min ( incl.
inner barrel temperature balancing time 5min, initial stage 10minmain stage 10
min, final stage 10min).
2. Enter WINDOWS time run program: select this item, the next time when you boot the
computer, the measuring and control system will be run automatically and the system
initialization will be done (defaulted as unchecked).
3. Cut off the computer when exit: Select this option to will be automatically cut off the
computer when exit the measuring and control programdefaulted as unchecked

 Description of the system advanced setting options

1. Cooling constant and comprehensive constantThis value is obtained based on the


calculation by the data processing program after the standard heat capacity is calibrated
up to the Chinese standardit is applicable for the calculation of the Chinese standard
calorific values V0, Vnabsolute value <0.9.
2. Balance, serial port and communication portThey have to be correctly set up so as to
ensure normal on-line communication of the balance ( serial port default value
(1200o,7, 1) .
3. Userdefined mass range: When select Sample category in the main form parameter
input box as User-defined, the option setting is effective
4. Judgement of Ignition failure and temperature rise45seconds after ignition, when
inner barrel temperature rise is lower than this set value, it is judged as ignition failure.
5. Additive weight conversionSelect this option and input the additive calorific value,
only additive weight is to be put in the main form parameter input box .

4 Expert Diagnosis

The function of the Expert Diagnosis is to facilitate the debugging staff to detect the
instrument hardware, the user operation is invalid.

5 Date processing

The data processing system is aimed to manage the testing data in more efficient way. It
covers the data management on the heat capacity and calorific value. During the experiment,
it allows for access to the database. For details, see Chapter V.

7 Testing operating process

The operating process of the measuring and control software is as follows:

Experiment Preparations
1. Prepare the dry, fully cooled test purpose special crucible with constant mass
2. Prepare the qualified O2, O2 bomb, oxygenator and special rags
Boot the computerdouble click icon on the desktop SDACM-IIIb Calorimeter

Parameter setting
1 Open the System setting window to set the testing method.
2 Open the Sample parameter window to set the sample parameters (e.g. testing type).
3 Open the Data processing software to set

Adjust the water temperature and weigh water


1 Click External barrel temperature measuring in the main window, put the probe into the external
barrel to measure the temperature ( in the course of measurement , sample weighing and other work
may be done ).When the external barrel temperature is relatively stable , click Record the temperature,
then the program will automatically record the external barrel temperature .
2 After the external barrel temperature is measured , click the Inner l barrel temperature
measuring, put the probe into the inner l barrel , stir well to ensure uniform water temperature in the
inner barrel .Meanwhile, observe status bar Inner and External Barrel Temperature Difference
when it showsOK, the temperature is properly adjusted Inner and external barrel temperature
difference in the same group of the parallel samples should be kept.
3 After the inner barrel temperature is adjusted , weigh water and dry the inner barrel outer wall .The
tared net water weight is 2Kg.

Experiment testing
1 Put the inner barrel (with water temperature adjusted) into the thermostatic tank, cover the barrel before
put the probe to the inner barrel ,then the prompt column should display Oxygen bomb connected .
2 Put in the sample mass and other parameters , the program will automatically enter the Testing status until
the experiment is over.
3 When the experiment is over, the program will enter the next sample testing Ready condition with the
procedures as above mentioned.
Data Save and Printing
1.When the experiment is over, the experiment data will be automatically saved into the database.
2.Click Data processing to enter Data management software to modify , delete and print the data ( In case of
automatic printing is set, the program will automatically print when the experiment is over otherwise, manual
printing is to be done).

1. Once the measuring and control program is run, the database login form will be popped
up as shown in Fig.5-1.
2. After select the user , directly press Enter to jump to the password input boxthe user
may be selected either through manual input or dropdown list. In case of wrong
password input for 3 times, the system will automatically close the login window.

not null and the parallel sample is satisfactory, the records of the parallel sample
decision conditions will be displayed.
c. Print the reportDuring the print preview, based on the report format display, two
kinds of calorific value reports are provided. One kind of calorific capacity report is
provided .During the calorific capacity print preview, no matter the report setting at
Default or Format I, the printing will be based on Default print.
d. Print assayerSelect this check box to print the assayer in Print Preview and Automatic
Print, otherwise the assayer not printed.
e. Print the procedure parametersSelect this item to print the system testing procedure
parameters in the Print Preview and Automatic Print
f. Automatically print the new dataSelect this item to automatically print the reports and
parallel sample when the calorific value or calorific capacity testing results are obtained.
For the printer without Paper Setup function (Such as laser printer), it is recommended
to cancel this option in order to save the paper.
g. Print standard, instrument code and oxygen bomb No.: The calorific value report form
is set at Format 2 or parallel sample pattern. Select this item to print the basic
standard, instrument code and oxygen bomb No.
h. Print copiesDuring the printing, print is done based on the set copies.

Chapter VI Instrument Maintenance

6 Maintenance of the Thermostatic Tank

a. The SDACM-IIIb thermostatic tank shall be reliably earthed.


b. Foreign matters or impurity entrapped into the external barrel is prohibited so as to
avoid water pollution, instrument failure from pipe blockage.
c. After the test, uncover the barrel to avoid corrosion of the instrument components.
d. The user is to renew the water minimum once every 6 months.
e. In case of any abnormality of the instrument, make the diagnosis through the
expert diagnosis system.

6 Oxygen Bomb Maintenance

a Every day before the test, the empty oxygen bomb shall be fully aerated and put
into the water for several minutes to see if the sealing property of the oxygen bomb is
good so as to ensure reliable testing results.
b Each time when the test is over, the oxygen components must be washed with
distilled water and dry the components with special towel
c In case of air leakage in the oxygen bomb, replace with stand-by ring seal.
Otherwise, the oxygen bomb cannot be used.
d In case of any thread breakage, the oxygen bomb service is prohibited.
e Regularly check the oxygen bomb quality, water pressure test should be done
minimum once a year (may sent to Sundy Company for the testing )
f Carefully take out and put in the oxygen bomb to avoid inner barrel damage due
to the collision.
g After use, the crucible should be cleaned and better to put it to the electric oven
for 3~5 min baking .After drying, the crucible should be cooled down before reuse.

3 Automatic Oxygenator Maintenance

a The test oxygen shall conform to Chinese standard GB213-200the use of the
electrolytic oxygen is prohibited. The oxygen cylinder should be placed in the area
up to the safety regulation.
b The oxygenator is to be put on the flat and sable working table.
c The oxygenator (include oxygen duct and relief valve) shall not be in contact
with various greases.
d The oxygen duct in the oxygenator should be protected against bending, torsion or
bumping.
e Open fire around the oxygenator is prohibited.
f In case the oxygen pressure in the oxygen cylinder is <5MPa, the oxygen should
be renewed. In case the oxygenation pressure in the oxygen bomb is > 3MPa, the
oxygen is to be evacuated and reinstall the oxygen bomb and reoxygenate the bomb.

4 Measuring and Control Software Maintenance

If the measuring and control software is destroyed, the software is to be deleted


before reinstall in the following procedures:

program select in the Program listSDACM-IIIb Measuring and Control
System Delete to perform the delete function . And the destroyed software can be
deleted safely and quickly in accordance with the message as the screen prompted.
The details of the software installation are shown in 3.2.3.
