General Meeting From the President’s Desk

April 23 By Bonnie Swanson

Our National Wildlife "Make Each Day Earth Day"!
Refuges and the Perils As a Principal of an elementary school I am in constant awe at how children
they face blossom and learn. I see so much potential and hope for the future through the eyes
of these little ones. Right now they are preparing an Earth Day Performance
entitled " Make Each Day Earth Day." I get to play the queen bee in a skit the first
Speakers graders will be doing about the importance of bees and their life cycles. I marvel at
Retired USFWS Regional how they investigate, giggle, and see that these tiny insects are so important to the
Director Walt Stieglitz life.

level of $382 million. PIPS has initiated large scale letter writing campaigns in
cooperation with other organizations, obtained resolutions of support from the
Brevard and Indian River County Commissions, Friends of the St. Sebastian River,
Sebastian River Area Chamber of Commerce, and the City of Sebastian, and worked
with Congressional staff members on the problem. We will submit written
testimony to the House and Senate appropriations subcommittees who oversee the
budget for the Refuge System. Also, the writer will testify in person, on behalf of
PIPS, before the House subcommittee on April 19. Your support for this project has
been very helpful, and is deeply appreciated.

Wow!
by Heather Stapleton
It has been a busy year as far as PIPS memberships go!
Just since December, PIPS memberships have increased
from 143 to 208! That is a 69% increase in
membership! And, that does not even include our
generous corporate sponsors. 46 of you joined during
the Pelican Island Wildlife Festival, setting an all time
record.
As you know, in this time of drastic budget cuts to the
National Wildlife Refuge System, memberships to
friends of groups, like PIPS, are more important than
ever. The NWRS has suffered a chronic shortfall in
funding for many years. In order to keep some refuges
operating, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service now must
impose major personnel reductions.
Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, the nation’s
first national wildlife refuge was once a showcase
refuge, but it is no longer considered a priority. Like
most refuges, it is suffering from significant reductions, Visit PIPS on the web at
including loss of staff. www.pelicanislandfriends.org
