Chapter 1 Introduction

1 Introduction
This chapter describes the main features of Convert-Export and what you can expect from the
software package.

1.1 What is Calculux Convert-Export?

Calculux Convert-Export is one of the software tools belonging to the Calculux family. It allows
you to convert photometric data of a Calculux database into photometric data of other commonly
used formats, such as EULUMDAT, IES, TM14 and LTLI. The generated data format is saved to
an output file which can be used by light technical software programs, such as Lightscape and
DIALUX. The luminaire information retrieved from de Calculux database can be saved in a
document file. In this way you can save the retrieved luminaire information and used it later on for
other conversions.

This version of Convert-Export supports the following database export formats:

Chapter 2 Installing Convert-Export

2 Installing Convert-Export
This chapter describes de installation requirements for Convert-Export and which steps you should
follow to install Convert-Export on your personal computer.

2.1 Installation requirements

Software requirements
MS-Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT 4.0.

Hardware requirements
CPU: min. Pentium, 100 MHz;
RAM: min. 16MB RAM;
Hard disk: min. 25 MB free disk space;
Others: SUPER VGA colour monitor (800 x 600, 256 colours);
mouse; graphical printer.

2.2 Installation instructions

In order to install Calculux correctly, please stop all other applications before starting the
installation.

To install the program:

Start Windows.
Insert the CD in the CD-ROM drive of your computer.
From the Windows Start menu, select Run.
When the Run dialogue box appears, click Browse.
On your CD-ROM drive, select Setup.
Click OK, to start the installation procedure.
The setup program prompts you through the installation.

. You can also use Windows Write to read the Readme file, which is stored in the Calculux\Convert-
Export directory.

Uninstalling the package:

From the Windows Start menu, select Settings > Control Panel.
Double click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
Select Calculux Convert-Export, click on the Add/Remo ve button and follow the instructions.

2.3 File structure

During the installation procedure by default the following directory structure will be created:

C:\Program Files\Calculux\Convert_Export

2.4 Environment settings and preferences

When the application is installed successfully, you can start the application and use the menu item
Preferences in the Edit menu to set the environment directories. The environment settings are
saved in the configuration file and are used each time the program is used. The environment
directories can be checked or changed at any time.

Use To
Input tab specify the default location of the Calculux database and the project files.
Output tab specify the default location of the generated output files for each format type.
Note: When the settings of the output tab are changed they will apply for all new
created projects (not for the currently opened project).
Angles tab specify the used angles for generated output files.

Chapter 3 Conventions and conversion rules

3 Conventions and conversion rules

This chapter gives background information about conventions and conversion rules applicable for
Convert-Export.

3.1 The photometric axis of a luminaire

One of the most important luminaire characteristics used in light technical calculation programs is
its luminous flux distribution. To describe the luminous flux distribution an appropriate reference
system of co-ordinates is needed. This reference system should define every direction in space.

In the Calculux database and the formats generated by Convert-Export the C-gamma coordinate
system is used (refer to section 3.2). The C-gamma system is defined with respect to the three main
photometric luminaire axis, which are defined through the photmetric centre of the luminaire.

Fig. 3.2: The C-gamma coordinate system for different luminaire types

In C-gamma photometry the first axis of the luminaire is the polar axis of the photometric grid.

The range of gamma angles is from 0 to 180 from the negative first axis to the positive first axis.
The range of C planes is from the 0 to 360 counter clockwise from the positive second axis to the
negative second axis.

3.3 Conversion rules

The Eulumdat, LTLI and TM14 format use the conventions as described above. For IES the
coordinate system is slightly different:

IESNA -91
For IESNA-91 the 90 plane is 0. All subsequent planes are rotated 90 clockwise.

Format type Coordinate system

Calculux plane 0 90 180 270 360

IESNA-91 90 0 270 180 90

IESNA -95
For IESNA-95 the 90 plane is 0. All subsequent planes are rotated 90 counter clockwise.

Format type Coordinate system

Calculux plane 0 90 180 270 360

IESNA-95 270 0 90 180 270

. Most of the light-technical software programs that use the above formats comply to the same
conventions. Nevertheless a slightly different interpretation of the format(s) is possible. For
example, it can happen that the light distribution is rotated 90. So always be aware for strange
results. Specially when luminaires are tilted.

The 'My Luminaires' folder in the Luminaires window lists all luminaires you have selected from a
data base or Phillum file. The luminaires listed are specifically for the currently opened project and
are saved in the Convert-Export document file.
Luminaires can be grouped in sub-folders, that can be added, renamed or removed. You can add
new luminaires to, or remove luminaires from a folder. By using the enhanced drag and drop
features you can also move or copy luminaires to a different folder, or change the order of the
luminaires within a folder.
When a new project is created the 'My Luminaires' folder is empty.
