Go to Explore, Brain Basics, you will move around topics within Brain Basics

1. Go to Our Divided Brain: Lobes of the Brain

Draw a rough sketch of the four different lobes of the brain and briefly describe the
function of each.

Take the short review quiz about Lobes of the Brain

2. From the Lobes of the Brain Page go to Poor Mr. Gage, read Phineaus Gages story
and explain who he is and the strange thing that happened to him. What were the results?

3. Go onto the page for Gage and Lobotomies and write a brief history of the lobotomy,
summarize what you have read.

4. Go to Divisions of the Brain and name the structures in the midbrain, forebrain and
hindbrain.

5. Go on to Divisions of the Nervous System and describe the parts of the Central
Nervous System

6. Stay on Millions and Billions of Cells: Types of Neurons and explain at least three
differences between Axons and Dendrites

7. Go to Functional Divisions of the Cerebral Cortex and explain the Speech Center and
Wernickes area of the brain. Also explain the functions of the Motor and Somatosensory
Cortexes. In what lobes do the sensory and motor cortex lie?

8. Go to The Brain: Right Down the Middle: Draw a picture of the brain and label the
following: Pituitary Gland, Corpus Callosum, Pons, Medulla, Spinal Cord and
Cerebellum.

9. Stay on The Brain: Right Down the Middle: Describe the function of 2 of the
following areas in your brain. Choose the 2 you know least about!
Hypothalamus

Thalamus

Brain Stem

Cerebral Cortex

Cerebellum

10. Go to Divisions of the Nervous System. In Autonomic Nervous System there is the
Sympathetic and Parasympathetic Nervous System. Explain what function each serve
and parts of the body that are effected by each.

11. Go to One Brain or Two. Briefly explain some of the functions held in your left
and right hemispheres.

12. Go to He Brains, She Brains. Explain a few of the differences found in male and
female brains. What is the validity of the many differences often noted between men and
womens brains?

Take the test to match the brains to the animals they belong to. Which one seems to most
resemble a human brain. http://faculty.washington.edu/chudler/compare2.html
