Welcome to English 9
This course will encourage students to appreciate the power and beauty of the English
language. Students will look closely and examine a wide variety of Canadian and
world literature. They will also be able to understand and appreciate various genres
non-fiction digital texts, and fiction texts, such as short stories, novels, poetry and a
Shakespearean play.

English 9 - Curricular Competencies

Using oral, written, visual, and digital texts, students are expected individually and collaboratively to be
able to:

1)Recognize and appreciate how different forms, structures, and features of texts reflect different
purposes, audiences, and messages
2)Think critically, creatively, and reflectively to explore ideas within, between, and beyond texts
3)Respond to text in personal, creative, and critical ways
4)Understand how literary elements, techniques, and devices enhance and shape meaning
5)Recognize and appreciate the role of story, narrative, and oral tradition in expressing First
Peoples perspectives, values, beliefs, and points of view
6)Develop an awareness of the diversity within and across First Peoples societies represented in
texts.
7)Exchange ideas and viewpoints to build shared understanding and extend thinking
8)Use writing and design processes to plan, develop, and create engaging and meaningful literary
and informational texts for a variety of purposes and audiences
9)Assess and refine texts to improve their clarity, effectiveness, and impact according to purpose,
audience, and message
10)Use an increasing repertoire of conventions of English spelling, grammar, and punctuation

Formative and Summative Assessments
Students will have many opportunities to think and communicate their ideas and thoughts
through reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will be required to
complete paragraphs, essays, stories, poems and creative works, reflective journals,
presentations, projects and write tests. Self, peer and teacher assessment and feedback will be
ongoing and students will have opportunities to revise and improve their work. Finally,
summative assessments such as in-class compositions, unit tests, and portfolio will carry more
weight in term marks.

NOTE: If a students work is not entirely complete at the time reports are issued, an I for
Incomplete or In Progress will be assigned. The student will be allowed additional time
to complete the work for a passing grade.

Expectations:

We are working in a community of respect. All members of the school community are
expected to respect themselves, each other, and the classroom rules developed at the
beginning of the year. Come to class on time and ready to learn and share your ideas!

If you miss a class, you are expected to email Ms. Ng directly at mng@sd38.bc.ca,
check school website, and ask a friend for missed work and assignments. Once
you are in class again, you are expected to hand in assignments on time.
