2. OBJECTIVES
This Method Statement details general procedures to be followed for Post Tension Works for slabs at
Project.

3. SCOPE
This method statement covers the works of the posttension form placing of the ducts to the final stressing
and grouting. Separate method statements are available for the works of formwork, reinforcement and
concreting

7. RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Project Manager has the overall responsibility for the implementation of this method statement and
shall well ensure that the approved Supplier for Ready Mix Concrete/Independent Testing Agency and
Sub-Contractors as well other team members are aware of the requirements of the Method Statement.
2. Project Manager is responsible to coordinate with the company PRO and the local bodies for obtaining
necessary and essential work permits if any, for proceeding with the works.
3. Construction Manager/ Project Engineer will ensure that the Resources are available to carry out the
works as scheduled.
4. The Project Engineer/Site Engineer is responsible to carry out the works as per approved Shop Drawings,
Method Statements.

5. The Site Engineer/Supervisor is responsible to ensure that the work has been carried out as per
specifications & drawings and inspections are done as per contract.
6. The Surveyor/Site Engineer/Supervisor is responsible for Setting out the area and measuring, monitoring
and controlling the lines and levels.
7. The QA/QC Engineer/ QC inspector is responsible to ensure that the work performed is in compliance
with the approved method statement & other applicable requirements.
8. The Post Tension Staff responsibility is as per the attached Responsibility matrix.
9. The Safety Officer is responsible to ensure that all safety precautions are in place and that the personnel
on site possess the necessary and essential PPE.
10. The Safety Officer is responsible to ensure that essential work permits are available prior to the
commencement of the work

8. PROCEDURE
8.1. Quality Requirements
1. The works shall be performed as mentioned in this procedure and the quality assurance
requirements shall be consistent with the relevant sections of Quality System Procedure Manual of
Contractor as well with the Project Quality Plan.
2. Quality Control and Tests for concrete shall be as per contract specification.
3. Testing laboratory shall be approved by the Engineer.
4. All gauges used for stressing shall be calibrated and certificate of calibration shall be maintained.

8.2. Ready Mix Concrete


Batching, mixing and delivering of concrete shall be performed in accordance with the trial mix
approved by the Engineer for the supply of Ready Mix Concrete.

8.3. General requirement for Post Tension slab


(Multi strand flat duct, bonded system).
1. Minimum concrete strength shall be 35 N/mm2 at 28 days.
2. Initial Stress: 25% of stressing loads to be applied to all strands when concrete strength reaches 25%
of its characteristic strength.
3. Final Stress: 100% of stressing loads to be applied to all strands when concrete strength reaches 75%
of its characteristic strength.
4. PC strand shall be 7 wires p.c. strand Dia 12.7 mm , grade 270K, low relaxation ASTM A 416M-96, TIS
420-2534 or BS5896-1980.
5. Jacking load on each p.c. strand shall be 85% of its ultimate load or as specified.
6. Duct for bonded tendon shall be corrugated flat metal duct.
7. Coefficient of friction of bonded tendon as used for elongation and force calculation are =0.20 and
K = 0.003
8. Anchorage type shall be PBL SF with anchor head type SF and 3 parts wedge. Grip slip values shall be
7 mm.
9. All mild steel reinforcement in the floor slab of size Dia 12 mm. up shall be grade SD40 with
fy = 4000 kg/cm2. Bar less than 12mm. Dia shall be grade SR 24 with fy = 2400 kg/cm2.
10. Cement for grouting shall be Portland cement type I.

8.4. Formwork
(Refer Section 031100 of specification)
1. Form works shall be designed and constructed in accordance with applicable codes within the
specified tolerances to the shape, lines, and dimension required by the design drawings(s).
2. Forms shall be coated with mould oil or release agent.
3. For slab work, Shore/ support shall be provided for floor directly under slab being placed so that
loads from construction above will safely transfer directly to these shores.
4. Formwork shall be struck without damaging, disturbing, or overloading the structure. &shall be after
applying the final stress in the slab and shall be agreed with the Engineer.
5. Calculations for formwork shall be submitted.

8.5. Reinforcing Steel Work


(Refer Section 032111 of Specification)
1. Re-bar work shall be performed in accordance with the relevant specifications, Drawings and as per
the Bar Bending Schedule.
2. Binding of Rebar shall be done using annealed wire of 1.6mm dia. (16 gauge)
3. The concrete cover to the reinforcement shall be as per approved drawings.
4. The lap length of rebar shall be as per Drawings/Specifications.
5. Re-bars shall be stored under cover on timber or concrete blocks at a minimum height of 300mm
above ground.
6. Reinforcement shall be securely fixed in position within a dimensional tolerance of 20mm in any
direction parallel to a concrete face and within a tolerance of 5mm at right angles to a face, provided
that cover is not thereby decreased below the minimum specified or otherwise as shown on
drawings.
7. Copy of mill certificate of the consignment shall be submitted to Engineer upon receipt of Re-bars at
site.

8.6. Embedded Items


1. Anchor bolts, Pipe sleeves, Conduits for electrical works, drains, curb and trench angles, and other
inserts as shown on the design drawings shall be placed, secured, and protected during placement of
concrete.
2. Engineers of relevant discipline from the Sub-contractor side shall check installation of embedment.
3. Standard work method of Post Tensioning (Multi strand flat duct, bonded system):

8.7. Tendon Installation


1. Set up of pre-stressing tendon components
2. Uncoil and lay strand in position
3. Lay duct into position and connect ducts with duct couplings (Minimum vertical tolerance of duct
positioning to be +/- 5mm & minimum concrete cover to all ducts to be 25mm).
4. Insert or push the strand into the duct with one strand at a time
5. Set up bar chairs and profile according to the location given on drawing.
6. Tape all duct joints
7. All tendons should be placed in the location and profile as shown by drawing.

9. Set up slab edge formwork and stressing recess on slab edge formwork.
10. Install anchorage bearing plate to stressing recess formwork
11. Support and fix the anchorage bearing plate into position using chair.
12. Provide and fix grout vent
13. Provide and fix anchorage bursting reinforcement
14. Seal all connections of components with tape
15. Set up of Dead End anchorage components
16. The onion (bulb) dead end type will be used.
17. The strand for each tendon will be formed with onion dead end by means of a special hydraulic
jack.
18. Anchorage bursting reinforcement at DE will be fixed into position as shown on attached DE details.

8.8. Concreting
1. Pouring concrete shall be done when the mild steel reinforcement and Post-tensioning components
are completely installed.
2. Should construction joints be needed during the pour, joints shall be located on drawing.
3. Tendon shall be observed during concreting. Any misalignment of tendon shall be rectified.
4. After concreting is complete the concrete should be cured as appropriate until the specified
strength has been attained prior to stressing operation.
5. Cube sampled shall be a minimum of 1 set (7 cubes) for each 75cum. and thereof of each concrete
placed in any one day. Of which 3 cubes shall be tested for 7 days and 3 for 28 days compressive
strength. 1 cube shall be retained as reserve for later testing.
6. Additional 15 cubes/slab shall be taken and set of 3 cubes shall be tested at 24hrs interval for
monitoring the concrete strength to apply the initial and final stress.

8.9. Stressing
1. Take off side formwork and stressing recess formwork prior to stressing operation
2. Clean up strand prior to stressing operation
3. Colour mark strand for elongation measurement reference
4. Place anchor head and wedge into each strand
5. Commence stressing after concrete has attained the specified compressive strength.
6. Stressing load on each strand should be as specified prior to lock off.
7. Stressing should be done according to sequence given. The tendon should be stressed from one end
only except otherwise indicated on the Dwg.
8. Stressing can be performed in both directions (transverse and longitudinal tendon) at the same time
if specified.
9. Elongation should be observed and recorded as soon as the stressing is complete.
10. Stressing equipments i.e. jack and pump should be set at a given operating
11. Pressure as conformation to the calibration document.
12. The elongation as measured should be verified with theoretically calculated
13. Elongation, as submitted. The discrepancies if any should be rectified satisfactorily.
14. After the elongation has been approved the strand should be cut by abrasive disc.

8.10. Grouting
1. Grouting should be performed as soon as the stressing operation is complete.
2. Grout vents are provided at anchorage for each cable.
3. The anchorage should be capped with concrete or suitable capping material prior to grouting
operation.
4. As soon as flushing is completed the grout operation shall start.
5. O.P Cementitious Grout mix shall have the mix proportion of water/cement ration as Specified by
the weight.
6. Typical properties of grout mix are as follows Water / cement ratio 0.49 by weight.
7. After grouting complete the projected projection of grout vent shall be cut flat by the means of
abrasive disc.

10. HEALTH, SAFETY, ENVIRONMENT (HSE)


The entire works will be carried out as per the guidelines established in the Project Specific HSE Plan.
Utmost importance shall be given to safety of personnel and protection of existing above /underground
Services. It will be ensured that the personnel involved are thoroughly aware of the Contractor/
Employer Safety regulations. To achieve the above the following shall also be ensured:
1. Tool Box Meetings will be conducted before starting the works.
2. All personnel will be provided with suitable Personal Protective Equipment.
3. Site staff to make sure that people use the necessary PPEs while working at height and edges.
4. Required permits will be obtained from the Engineer/ authorities concerned before starting the
works.
5. Plant & Equipments shall be fully tested & certified by an independent testing agency. Copies of
certificates shall be submitted to Engineer
6. All pneumatic / lifting equipments including booms, slings; chain blocks etc. shall be fully tested &
certified by an independent testing agency. Copies of certificates should be available.
7. The area must be clearly barricaded and sign boards must be fixed not to allow movement of
people and traffic.
8. People should not be allowed to work in the area where stressing jobs are in progress.
9. Site Engineer/Supervisors must make sure that necessary platforms are available for the people
to perform stressing jobs prior to starting the job.
10. All people must be properly trained prior to starting jobs and all hazards must be conveyed to
them by the way of Tool Box meeting.
11. Jacks used for the job must be of good quality. Test certificate shall be available.
12. Site staff must make sure that excess pressure is not exerted during the stressing jobs that could
lead to breakage of strands/tendons/bananas.
