Pleaseensureyouworkinsafe,welllitenvironment.ElectrostaticDischargecoulddamagethe
ECUsobesuretogroundyourselfwhenworkingwithelectronics.Avideoguideofthisinstall
processisalsoonouryoutubechannel here.

1. First,disconnectthebatteryfromthecar,thenpullbackthecarpetinthepassenger
footwelltoexposetheECUcoverplate.

2. RemovetheECUCoverPlateanddisconnecttheEngineharnessfromthefactoryECU.

3. NextundotheECUretainingbracketsfromthecarbylooseningthethree10mmBolts.

4. Youmayneedsomesnipsatthispointtocutanycabletiesusedtoretaintheloom.

5. RemovetheECUfromthecar,andplaceonabenchinaclean,welllitarea.

6. Now,removethe4crossheadscrewshighlightedinthepicturebelow,andremovethe
cover,exposingtheECUinternalsasshown:

7. Next,removethescrewsontheothersideoftheECU,andagainremovethecover
plate,andthenremovethe6PCBretainingscrewsasshownbelow:




8. Nextlocatethetwosmallerphillipsheadscrewsasshownbelow,andremovethem:

9.NowremovetheoldPCBfromtheECUschassis(
youmaywishtokeepthisPCBifyouever
wishtoreturntheECUtostock

10.Next,taketheME221PnPandfitasshown,usingthe2mmwasherprovidedonthescrew
markedinBLUEbetweenthechassisandthePCB.YouwillonlyneedtofitfourofthePCB
retainingscrewsastheME221isasmallerPCBthantheOEMone:

11.Nowrefitthebottomcoverplate.AtthispointtheECUisabletobereinstalledonthe
vehiclewiththetopcoverleftunfittedtoallowforalaptopconnectionfortuning.However,ifyou
plantotakethevehicletoatuningcentre,thenbothcoverplatescanberefitteduntilthattime.

NowrefittheECUtothevehicleasoriginallyfitted,reconnectthebattery,andturnthekey...

Theengineshouldstart,idle,anddriveasbeforeonthesuppliedbasemap.

Bareinmindbasemapsareprovidedwithoutwarrantysoifyouhaveamodifiedengine
itisbest(andwealwaysrecommendedinanycase)thatyoutakethecartoyournearest
rollingroadforchecking/tweakingasrequired.Failuretodosomaydamageyourengine.

PlumbingtheonboardMAPSensor
TheME221MX5/MiataPnPfeaturesa21psionboardMAPsensorthatisusedwhenrunning
superchargedorturbochargedengines.Itsfittingisa3mmbarb.Pleaseusethesupplied
vacuumhoseandrunittotheinletmanifoldAFTERthethrottle.Youcandrilla10mmholein
thecaseanduseagrommettopassitthroughtheOEMcasingneatly.

CoolantFanDrive
Onthebaseboard,usetheJ_FANjumpernearthemainplugtoselectwhichtypeoffanyou
areusingnotethemarkingsonearlyboardsareincorrect(theystateyears,laterboards
correctlystateenginesize)pleaseeither:

Pre93or1.6 ifyouhavea1.6NAMX5

>93or1.8ifyouhavethe1.8NAMX5

OEMAirConControl(Early1.6/1.8Model)

OnR3PCBs,tohaveairconworking(mostlythisisremovedforturbochargingspace
requirements)thefollowingwirebridgemodneedstobemade:


Cutthewiresthatruninto1Jand1Qandthenlinkthemtogetheronthecarside(theecuside
wirescanbeleftunconnected/cutshort).

MAFLESSFuelPumpControl(Early1.6Only)

OntheEarly1.6cars,thefuelpumpisdrivenbytheMAFsensor,sowithitsremovalthefuel
pumpwillnotbeactivewhenrunning.Toovercomethis,removetheSTSIGN10Afusefrom
theunderbonnetfusebox(asshownbelow,noteitistheonly10Aspadetypefuseinthebox)
andalsoinstalltheMAFLESSjumperonthePCB.

IfyourPCBisanoldertype(<R4)anddoesnothavetheMAFLESSjumper,thenyoucan
havethefuelpumpupandrunningintwoways:

1. YoucanpermanentlybridgetheF/Ppininthediagnosticconnector(onthepassenger
wingunderthebonnet)toGROUND(andthefuelpumpwillrunwiththeignitionon).OR
2. YoucanrunawirefromthediagnosticF/Ppintotheconnection2TontheECU(inred
below)whichwillgivefullECUfuelpumpcontrol.

FittingtheIATSensor
IfyouhaveremovedtheMAFsensorthenyouwillneedtoinstallanIATsensor.Installitinthe
inlettractAFTERanysupercharging/turbocharging/intercoolingstage(nearthethrottleplateis
best),andconnectittotheIATconnectionsontheoriginalMAFsensorconnector.Bareinmind
youwillneedtoaltertheIATHRTtabletosuitthenewsensortype.

SimplywireaGMOpenElementIATSensorintoyourfactorywiringharnessattheAFM
connector.YoucanpokewiresintotheAFMconnector,oryoucancutandsplice.Wireone
leadoftheGMSensortotheBrownWireattheAFMConnector(coloursmayvarybutthe
pinoutdoesnot),andtheotherleadoftheGMSensortotheYellowwireattheAFMConnector.

UsingaVariableTPS
WeHIGHLYrecommendthefitmentofatruevariableTPSsensoronthemodelsthatdonot
haveoneasstandard.Withoutthis,thetransitionfromidletopartthrottlewillnotbe100%
perfect,andtheenginemaystutterslightly.

Notethatthe1.89496modelhasavariableTPSasstandard,andisdirectlysupportedin
thehardware.

Forthe1.6models(notincludingautomatic)itisbesttouseavariableTPS.Wesupplyan
optionalbaseplatethatallowsyoutousetheBMWTPS(searchebayfor1721456).Thisfits
usingtheplateandevenusesthesameplugtypesonowiringneedstobedone.Theonlything
youwillberequiredtodoistoselectthelinearjumperonthebaseboard(J_TPS1),installthe
jumperonJ_TPS2andalsocalibrateyourTPSHRTtableintheMEITE,andalsosetyour
accelerationenrichmentdrivertouseaTPSinsteadofMAP.PleaserefertotheMEITE/ME221
referencemanualsfordetailsonthis.Thereisalsoapostonthisontheforumswithideal
