In Evidence Based practice for Nurses the one thing that one must

admit that he/ she has learned is research and the reasoning behind the

topic at hand. Research is a process that is not completed in one sitting,

it is a process that require subsequent sessions to avoid duplication

(Schmidit & Brown pg 123). Thus it is understood that when selecting a

research topic has to be of interest or need. The topic Utilization of

Foley Catheter during a cesarean section, became interesting as the rates

of patients that get treated for UTI post cesarean sections had risen

which affected reimbursements and most of all patient satisfaction and

outcome. The foley catheter is a tube that gets placed in the bladder prior

to any cesarean section delivery. During the cesarean section it is current

practice to insert foley catheters right before the surgery and remove or

discontinue the use of foley catheter post 24 hours from delivery. This

practice is not supported by current research as new information is

surfacing decreasing the usage of foley catheters. According to the

research that was conducted it is proven that cesarean sections can be

done without any foley catheter in place and also if the need is required

intermittent catheterization or indwelling catheterization for shorter

period during cesarean section and 4-8 hours post cesarean section.

Reflection:

According to Essential III on AACN in research on must collaborate in

the collection, documentation, and dissemination of evidence

(AACN,16). In this course information was collected utilizing various

articles and libraries on the Internet that helped gather the information

regarding foley catheter use and cesarean sections. The documents were

read and evaluated in order to see if the information can be utilized for

the research. Research guidelines were utilized to validate the articles.

Step by step approach from understanding what data/ information and

dissemination mean to actual search of information from different sites

and articles were used. This systematic search terms helped in clarifying

information through different database. Information was collected and

literature was reviewed clearly finding the dates, authors and topic at

hand, foley catheter in cesarean section was collected.

This research for evidence base practice for foley catheter use in

cesarean section provided clarity in how research is conducted and the

process of changing current practice. It shows understanding of

qualitative and quantitative studies This step by step approach helps in

creating understanding of another essential III which discusses how to

Acquire an understanding of the process for how nursing and related

healthcare quality and safety measures are developed, validated, and

endorsed (AACN,16). Even though utilization of foley catheter is a

common practice in obstetrics, research shows proves that the use of

urinary catheter is not necessary part of cesarean section, as the absence

of foley catheters during cesarean sections will have very limited effect

on urinary retention. Research shows as long as the patient is healthy

and the cesarean section is uncomplicated the need for foley catheters

can be a changing practice (Lang et al. Obstetrics & Gynecology pg.66).

Professional nursing practice is grounded in the translation of

current evidence into practice (AACN pg16). After collecting the

information from the articles utilizing a step by step approach of

literature review. Practice recommendations were provided in how to

implement the research that has been conducted. Three

recommendations were given to complete the research regarding

evidence evaluation of foley catheter use in cesarean section. The

recommendations were constructed utilizing all the pieces of data that

were gathered. As the essential III discusses this research for evidence

based practice regarding foley catheter use during cesarean sections

integrate evidence, clinical judgment, inter professional perspectives,

and patient preferences in planning, implementing, and evaluating

outcomes of care (AACN. 16). Research helps improve patient care and

patient outcome. The recommendations have to co-join the

implementation process. According to Schmidt Implementation of the

research will have to take place as the acceptance level rises within the

population at hand (Schmidt pg.365).
