Essay 1: What excites you most about your intended field of study?

Essay 2: What do you see yourself doing professionally upon graduation and how will a degree
from Santa Clara help you achieve these aspirations?

Essay 3: Discuss any attributes, experiences, or interests that would enable you to make a
distinctive contribution to the school and/or business profession.

Admission Requirements
1. Admission to the Graduate Division.
2. International students must have achieved a score of at least 80 on the TOEFL iBT
exam (or an approved score on the IELTS or PTE). International students having earned
a degree in the USA are not required to submit TOEFL or IELTS exam scores.
3. Submission of scores for the general GRE test to graduate admissions and program
evaluations (GAPE). There is no minimum score but scores will be used to rank qualified
applicants.
4. Calculus through multiple integration and partial differentiation, as usually gained
through 3 semesters of calculus (e.g., Math 30, 31, and 32 at SJSU), each with a grade
of at least B.
5. Linear Algebra (e.g., Math 129A at SJSU), with a grade of at least B.
6. A calculus-based introductory course in probability and statistics (e.g., Math 161A at
SJSU) with a grade of at least B.
7. Letters of recommendation (2-3), sent directly to the Statistics Graduate Coordinator at
the address below (to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics).

The MS Statistics program is designed for students entering in a fall semester. All
spring courses require fall courses as prerequisites. Admissions for a spring semester,
when the university allows such applications, is limited to exceptional students who
have already learned the material in the first fall semester courses.

A total of 36 semester units (usually 12 courses) of coursework are required for this
degree:

Math 167: Programming in SAS
Math 261A: Regression Theory and Methods
Math 261B: Design and Analysis of Experiments
Math 267A: Statistical Programming with R
Math 269: Statistical Consulting
Project requirements are to be satisfied through one of the following:

Math 203: CAMCOS


Math 298: Research Project
Math 298i: Internship
Electives are chosen with the consent of the Mathematics Graduate Advisor and/or the
Statistics Graduate Advisor to bring the total number of units in the program to 36
semester units. See the electives page for more information.
Please note that all students must meet the Graduation Writing Assessment
Requirement (GWAR) independently of the 36-unit degree requirement.
