Joint Range of Motion

Background:

Goniometry is the measurement of the range of motion in a joint. It can be used as a

diagnostic test or therapeutic measure to determine functional status of a patient with a

musculoskeletal or neurological disability. You used a goniometer in this process to measure the

range of motion in a joint. You place the hinge of the goniometer on the joint you are measuring,

the you place the stationary arm parallel to the bone that is not moving and the moving arm next

the bone that is moving to measure the total range of motion in the joint.

Hypothesis:

The joint with the biggest range of motion would be the knee, then elbow, shoulder, hip,

wrist, and the joint with the least range of motion would be the ankle.

Procedure:

Use a goniometer to measure the joint angles of motion for each member of your group

of the following movements. Compare your results to the norms stated on the

website:www.stranton.edu/faculty/kosmahl/courses/gonio/index.shtml.

a. External and internal rotation of the shoulder with the shoulder in 90 of abduction while

supine

b. Elbow flexion in the supine position

c. Wrist extension with the forearm in neutral and elbow in 90 degrees of flexion

d. Hip external and internal rotional in the sitting position with hip and knee each in 90 of

flexion

e. Knee flexion in the prone position

f. Ankle dorsiflexion with the knee in 90 of flexion versus the knee in full extension

Analysis:

The highest range of motion was elbow with an average of 137. The next highest was

the knee with an average of 130.3. The next highest range of motion was the shoulder with an
average of 83.5. Following the shoulder was the wrist with an average of 80.8. The final two

were the hip and the ankle with averages of 37.8 and 4 respectively.

Conclusion:

My hypothesis was incorrect in predicting the places of the elbow, knee, wrist and hip,

but I did correctly predict the place of the shoulder and ankle. I originally predicted the joint with

the biggest range of motion would be the knee, then elbow, shoulder, hip, wrist, and the joint

with the least range of motion would be the ankle. They actually fell as elbow, knee, shoulder,

wrist, hip, and ankle. Through out this lab I learned that we have many different types of joints

that have various motions and they all have a limited range of motion. I also learned we can

measure the range of motion using a tool called a goniometer.
