WHAT IS MERITOCRACY?

The actual meaning of a meritocracy is a regime of people qualified by

merit to govern. Merit includes competence, experience, and honesty.

Or in other words, mean government by people who are qualified to

govern because of their character, competence, and integrity, not because
they belong to any special group or are endowed with superior talent or
intellect

WHY THERE IS MERITOCRACY IN TUN DR. MAHATHIR THOUGHTS AND

POLICIES?

He believes that without protections, the bumiputera would lose against the
non-bumiputera.

Examples: In education and social balances

The concept of meritocracy is applicable when the characteristics of the

people do not differ much either racially and politically.

However, in an uneven multiracial society such as Malaysia, readjustment in

terms of corrective policies should be made in order for the weaker to
improve further and participate in the social and economic development of
the country.

For meritocracy to work efficiently in Malaysia, equal opportunity must be

established first. The vast gulf between rural and urban schools in terms of
library facilities, teachers, computers facilities and even equipment needs to
be balanced.

Economic inequality where rural peoples have limited access to

modernization due to poverty and the minimum standards of other facilities
also needs to be considered. The urban students, on the other hand, are
better off and have access to the Internet, private tuition and other modern
facilities.

Therefore, at the same time, a multi-ethnic party system should be

emphasized to provide a clear indication that Malaysians can work together
without any racial interference.

Tun Dr. Mahathir think that the time is not right for disregarding the
disparities between the races in the interest of equity and merit.
