Preface

This paper presents the role that technicality is an important part in an engineers
career. It shows how necessary it is for an engineering graduate improved through
an understanding of the mechanics of basic principles and the application of the
his knowledge.

This paper is primarily addressed to Universitys administration and staff

members, who play a very important role in the growth and development of the
youth. An understanding of basic theory, as one of the basic factors that influence
professionalism will help them provide for better means of meeting the practical
needs of university students with varied mental abilities, and physical and
emotional make-ups.

Grateful acknowledgment is here made to those who helped our

researchers gather data for this paper. This work would not have reached its
present form without their invaluable help.
Introduction:
The deterioration of educational system of Pakistan, the professional scholars are
facing difficulties to grow a career. And the same goes to the engineers of our
university. And that is the main objective of this paper.

Background:
From the beginning of mankind, there is some latent thing inside the humans
which thrives them to the greatest heights achievable and the height which he
achieves is obtained his thought process and due to his thinking ability, he
questions about the creation of everything in this world and to get the answers of
these things, he strives for knowledge of all types whether it is related to art,
science, human evolution, technology, or construction. To acquire that knowledge,
he has to obtain education or educate himself.
The engineering is one of the fields related to human education. It is the most
exciting and potentially lucrative professional paths a young person can choose,
and is highly sought after as a career. But today engineers in our society are not
found to be technically skillful in their field. In this regard the teachers continue to
teach the students about the relevant curriculum but theres no experimentation.
In addition, technical societies in engineering universities also state about the
technical projects and skills they provide and claim that they will provide the
students with a platform to polish their technical liabilities. Instead weve been
seeing some technical societies collecting hundreds and even thousands of rupees
per head in the name of teaching new technical skills and yet engineering
graduates are produced with zero skill rate most of the time. To account for this,
some companies organize their own tests to check the abilities of the engineers of
this institute and only a few engineers qualify for the job. Why is it so? Engineers
are required to have technical skills, excellent communicative abilities, and fine
leadership skills in addition to good grades. But some students get good grades
yet they are unable to communicate with the society and the consequence of the
demise in the quality engineers retrieval arises. Having a view of the reasons for
this demise we had done a survey to find the solutions for better technical
abilities of the engineers by taking the view of persons around the university.
Statement of purpose
The purpose of our work is to highlight the demise of uet in providing the society
with engineers possessing good skills and to present the university with the ways
of providing the society with better skillful engineers.

Scope of Work
We have consulted students of various sessions and investigated their opinions
through a survey.

Review of related
literature
In the past days, only a few work had been done on the quality engineer
production. Some works revealed that the main cause of demise of skills and
capabilities of todays engineers is the universitys own degrading moral.
Universitys behavior towards the students is changed a lot in recent years and the
way the university organized the situations regarding the students is a lot being
changed. Some work pieces also revealed that the major cause of the degraded
skills of engineers is the environment being provided to the students. Social media
is one the major cause as stated by one the work pieces. A survey by some Indian
engineering students involved that Towers Watson director of organizational
surveys and insights Yves Duhaldeborde said the development need of skilled
engineers had been neglected. A survey also revealed that put of every 100
persons 96 said that the quality of engineers is being degraded in the recent years.
And the causes revealed were the universitys changed behavior towards the
students and the environment being provided to the graduates.

Methods
We have organized a survey and set a questionnaire and consulted students of
various department including electrical, mechanical, civil, architecture and others
and took their opinions about the technical events and technical societies in uet.
In addition, we also consulted them about the projects that they have ever been
assigned in their departments or in any other technical society that they are
dealing with. We have taken their opinions about the behavior and abilities of
teachers regarding the subjects that they are teaching and asked about the
teaching workshops whether these should be organized for teachers or not. We
have discussed with our classmates about the technicalities of engineers of today
and also got the opinions of our seniors about their final year projects and those
projects which they were assigned in their laboratory work or somewhere else.
Also we taken into account the view of the funding for the projects and the offers
given by the companies for the jobs to the engineers of our university. We have
talked to the females about their future and asked whether do they actually want
a job in the related field or they want to take care of their family and husbands.
We have analyzed all the got data and discussed individually among ourselves too
and the results are being presented the coming sections of the report.

Finding and
Discussion
We have discussed with the about the teaching methods of teachers. Students
told us about the sleepy and cold environment offered by their teachers during
their lectures. Most of the students told that their teachers are so cold while
teaching and there is not least interaction between them and their teacher during
lectures. Some of the students also told about the speaking styles of their
teachers and said that sometimes they are unable to understand or recognize
what their teachers are saying. And we also found out that 100% of the students
being consulted wanted the teaching workshops to be organized for the teachers
and they wanted the teachers to be attending those workshops for betterment of
their ways and skills for teaching. So that the teachers would be able to convey
the lectures to the students in a far better and organized way in which each of
student would remain attentive and everyone would be indulged in the lecture.
Furthermore, we consulted the students about their own behavior during the
lectures. Only 20% of the students said that they listen to the lectures carefully
while 44% said that they dont either even attend the lectures or they are busy in
their smartphones or in their own personal issues or they are busy sleeping in
their lectures. While the remaining 36% are like they listen to some extent. They
said that they listen to their teachers to some extent and they also remain
involved in their own activities during the lectures also.
The grading system was of a huge concern in this regard. We have asked the
students about whether the way that the universities and companies are judging
them by their cgpa and grades is correct or not. Whether the way of judging
todays engineers by their grades only is perfect or there should be some other
way to judge the capabilities of the students. Only 36% students gave the opinion
of maybe term while 64% said that the consulting grading is not judging their
skills properly while 0% were on the side of this system. We also found that in
2010 session of polymer engineering the undergraduate with the top grades was
jobless till one month after the completion of degree while one of his mates with
lower grades got a confirmation for his job in Engro fertilizer plant in dehrki during
his internship there. Also we have come across the fact that most of such
companies prefer the graduates with more technical projects in their experience
of regarding areas. So, we also asked about the technical events they have
attended during their period in the university. We found that 63% never attended
technical events in the university and only 37% were being through the technical
events. Most of the students were not interested in the technical events rather
they were interested in the entertainment in the institute. Some of the students
were even having their own personal projects in their residences. They were
trying do something technically by their own personal abilities. Some of the
students were giving a view of the funding by the university official and they said
that university never provides them with proper funds to polish technical skills.
And they always had to do a theoretical project instead of doing something
technically.
Then, we discussed about the technical platforms offered by the societies that
whether the societies are even promoting technicality or not. Only 36% said that
the societies are promoting technicality while 32% said no and 32% said maybe.
The students also gave the opinions that the societies are focusing more on the
icons as their chief guests and presenters in their closing ceremonies. Some told
that their societies told hundreds and even thousands of rupees for the projects
but there was never a project afterwards. Some said that the standard of this
standard starts from sky-lanterns. Some students also told that their regarding
societies also organized the visits and tours to the technical regarding areas.
In one of the questions it was inquired from the uetians about their last project.
An interesting fact came into the light that actual creating the project and making
it to the working condition is not the strongest point of uetians. Following results
were calculated:
37.5% fabricated their project: These were the students who had done their
project by themselves and it was in working shape let alone physical
demonstration. These included final year projects of final year students of 13
session electrical department of UET, midterm projects of 15 session of
mechanical, electrical and civil Engineering and some technical societies were also
in this category. 46% theoretical Project: It was revealed that majority of uetians
had done their projects on theoretical basis. This includes research on theoretical
analysis of cost and budget of various projects, the feasibility reports of existing
hypothetical models, reports on identification of possible improvements to
enhance efficiencies etc. It was found to be easiest and most widely used way of
doing the project in UET.4% poster presentation: Instead of actually
demonstrating the project only the poster presentation of the project was given
by these students. It was found that budget constraints were the actual reason for
that.12.5% had not done any project which is an alarming situation for the
university. It should be carefully noted that the purpose of engineering is not
fulfilled by only theoretical approach, practical is a key and of core importance for
an engineer. An opinion on this situation was inquired from the CEO of sunrise
power productions Mr. Imran Bajwa , he suggested to emphasize on the final year
projects and to make them working and special sponsors should be sought to
meet the funding limitations.
It was also asked that what you think your next project should be like? By this
question it was desired and was an attempt to know the willingness of students to
the the projects and to evaluate them how their approach was towards the
modern day technicality and the corresponding need towards the fabrication of
working models rather than hypothetical theories and ideas. 54% said it should be
fabricated by ourselves and shown remarkable interest in making a physically
working project. 25% went for the idea of presentation for their project as they
expressed a great need for the amount of time and money it would need to fully
make it working, 12.5% seemed interested in theoretical project and reports. They
find it more beneficial depending on their own personnel will and power, and
8.5% said there should be no project at all. As it was a question design to lure out
the internal willingness to be technically advance and to strive for betterment and
technicality, so it is now obvious that majority wants it but a lack of proper
support , platform and opportunities hinders their way.
In most of the survey majority of the inquisition was done from the male students
but it was deemed necessary to inquire specifically from the female students as
they are equal and contribute equally to the betterment of university and as an
Engineer to the world. A specific questionnaire was designed for the female
members of UET. An attempt was made to know what the female engineers of
UET prefer to do after their graduation. Rather surprising figures came into view
that showed 34% females want to do technical job which is related to field and to
face the challenges of industry. 34% plans for higher studies in Pakistan as well as
abroad after graduation. 16% wanted to research in their near future. They plan
to research based on their interest to theoretical areas of engineering. 16%
wanted to be housewives. They just want a degree and thats all. Some funny
answers were given by this category. The summary to which would be to end their
academic carrier either due to the restrictions imposed by the societies or the
sheer boredom from the engineering methods and ways.
Many believe that the engineers of today are not that much passionate about
their field and do not enjoy their work. Well it is said that creativity is doing your
job with fun and it further adds to its vitality. An attempt was made to find what
kind of job uetians would prefer. 39% wanted cabin based jobs they prefer the
ease of environment as their first and foremost priority. Certain comments drew
our attention which specified a fully air conditioned environment with peace and
tranquility as a major factor along with a demand of opposite gender as a source
of collaboration and attraction was sought by this category of engineers. 35%
went for research based job. A platform was sought by this category where they
can imply their technical and intellectual skills. These students seemed passionate
about what they were doing and learning. A certain aura to make a change and
doing something great was reflected by this category, 26% voted for a salary
based job. They straight forwardly demanded a six digit salary. It was perhaps a
way for them to lead an ideal happy life. No matter the type and specifications of
this job, as far as these types were getting a handsome salary they will go for it.
Keeping in view the facts that were reveled there is still a deficit in the passion of
what an engineer should be concerned of.
Until this point it was crystal and clear that the quality and technicality needed for
a modern day engineer was somehow missing from the students and it was an
alarming situation if one analyzes it critically. So a suggestion from the students
who will be becoming future engineer was asked and the ratio of core suggestions
were: 4% suggested a great need of more and more technical events should be
organized for the students as these technical events are a great source of learning
and professional grooming which is vital for an engineer, 24% said that better
teaching ways and standards should be introduced in the university as they view
the system as outdated and misleading. A lot of criticism was faced against the
teaching methodology and personal indulgence of students in the class and other
learning activities. , 8% directed to increase the annual budget of university as
mosly due to financial constraints and funding of university for the students and
the students find it very difficult to display their technical skills with limited
budget which is a barrier for them in making great progress. In a study it was
found that the annual budget of uet was 2.7 billion rupees at the same time the
expenditures are 2.8 billion so there is already a wide gap between source and
expenditure. This indicates a lack of proper planning and non transparency in the
administration system of the university, 48% blamed a lack of industrial tours
arranged by the university was a key factor for the immaturity of university
students of becoming professional and creative engineers. The gap between the
industrial environment and university environment is a critical factor. Perhaps this
is the reason that at least half of the students went for this option, 8% believed
communication skills deserved to be addressed as a key factor that the quality of
engineers produced by the university is not up to the mark. It is often suggested in
the university to improve the communication skills of students when they are
compared to other students of universities like NUST, GIKI, LUMS, PIAS, FAST and
many more. , 4% indicated by obeying their rightful duties. These students
pointed out that it was there personnel negligence and by making a serious
approach towards their professional life they can improve the quality of engineers
produced each year by the university.
At the last it was asked by the students that do you think government is playing its
role in supporting engineering universities to produce quality engineers. The reply
that came from the future aspect of nation, of course the engineers themselves
was a one sided one. They replied with a big NO. Nearly 78% said No, 18% went
for maybe they were not really sure, only a small 4% said yes!! The results to this
questionnaire tell the story itself about the seriousness of the government for the
betterment of university. Many attempts are made but still a lot is to be done by
the government, by the system, by teachers and by ourselves.
