Project Title: e-Campus using IBM’s AS400

Abstract:

With the need for globalization Internet plays an important role for developing online
applications. E-campus using IBM’s AS400 provides an intuitive framework for maintaining a
variety of campuses be it school, college or even a university. AS400 primarily a part of the IBM
i-series provides world’s fastest server (DB2) and thus helps the cause for maintaining a large
database with fast data retrieval, thereby serving institutions with huge databases.

This project takes advantage of the fact that AS400 being a mainframe has its own front-
end as well as backend and hence its users don’t need to have a specific add-on as far as front or
back end is concerned. AS400 being one of the most secure platforms, will helps the application
in maintaining confidential records for various sections of the campus. The server for the
application is maintained in Germany and hence the users won’t need to maintain any physical
storage on their system as such. They just need to install an emulator software with minimal size
on their system by the use of which they will be logged in to the application whenever needed.
This will solve any storage problems since users will be directly connected to a huge online
database in Germany maintained by IBM.

A self driven module in the proposed system will concentrate on accomplishing

automated tasks such as Email alerts, SMS alerts, Notifications to the administrator, staff,
students, etc. Right from admissions, results, payroll, attendance, results and library, e-campus
will provide all the transactions needed to maintain information. The very fact that it is online
improves its efficiency.

Interactive and user-friendly, e-campus has minimum requirements. As mentioned earlier

the emulator software allows changes to be made to the records which is stored on a separate
database and hence the user will be facilitated with low maintenance costs.

Thus with minimum requirements and maximum data storage facilities, e-campus will
reduce the efforts of the users. With optimum security available users need not worry of their
data and transactions. Hence e-campus will provide a simple, cost-efffective and maintenance-
free solution to its users.
