ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION
Enzymes are proteins produced by living cells that act as catalysts. Catalysts speed up the rate of
a chemical reaction without being used up in the process. A chemical reaction is a process where one or
more substances (known as reagent, reactants, or substrates) are converted to another type of substance
(product). Enzymes achieve their effect by temporarily binding to the substrate and, in doing so, lowering
the activation energy needed to convert it to a product.

Enzyme kinetics is the study of the chemical reactions that are enzyme-catalyzed. In enzyme
kinetics, the reaction rate is measured and the effects of varying conditions of the reaction are investigated.
There are two equations that describe the kinetics of enzyme-catalyzed reaction: the Michaelis-Menten
equation and the Lineweaver-Burke equation. The Lineweaver-Burke equation is a simpler way of
analyzing enzyme kinetics by transforming the Michaelis-Menten equation. The equation is also known as
the double reciprocal equation.

Inhibitors are usually proteins that interact with the enzyme in some way to prevent it from working
in a normal manner. There are three general types of inhibitors based on their mode of binding: competitive,
non-competitive, and uncompetitive inhibitors.
