TABLE 10-3
AnnualRevenues and Costs per Hectare after Market Prices Double
(Fig. I0-1Oc) net profits on grain farming dimin ish at all potential
production points when gross profits drop from GPG to GP .After
grain's zone of profit shrinks, at no point is grain more profitable than either
dairy or meat raising. In such a case the grain production zone would be
eliminated and the other two production zones would move in to replace it.
Transportation rate changes can also cause profit and production zones to
expand and shrink. Consider a case where the transport rate on meat drops 50
percent due to an innovation. Perhaps a railroad is built or refrigerated freight
cars are introduced (Fig. 10-lOd). The lower freight rate means that even
though gross profits at the market remain unchanged,, net profits decline more
slowly than they did before the rate reduction. Meat was once profitable out to
30 kilometers. After freight rates drop by 50 percent, the profitable zone for
meat extends from zero to 60 kilometers, and the production zone extends
from 6 to 60 kilometers instead of the former 7.5 kilometers to 30 kilometers.
The meat zone widens inward toward town because the transport rate on meat
went down while the grain transport rate stayed the same. With its newly
acquired competitive advantage, the meat production zone can nibble 1.5
kilometers into the grain zone before, at 6 kilometers from town, grain and
meat each produce equal net profits per hectare.

en fk e New South Wates Coafjield.r/ ,Annals of the Asso* ciation of American Geographers, LVIII [1968],
Fig. 2 p. 79, by parniission of the publisher).
As time passes, demand for coal rises, the early worked deposits are exhausted, and
underground tunnel haulages become long and expensive. A second phase of mi1ung
activity begins with the opening up of a new batch of tunnel inines still on the outcrop
but at a greater distance from the shipping point and the market (2aJ 2h) 2c). Eventually,
rising costs of surface haulage from tunnel mouths to t11e shipping point get so I1igh that total costs are
reduced by mining coal at greatet depth but close to the shipping point (3a, Sb, 3c). The start of shaft
mining through vertical or inclined shafts initiates a. third coal field development phase'vhen overland
hauls from ever more distant tunnel mouths (phase 2) become exces sive:and when haulages
through tunnels (from phases 1 and 2) become excessively long and congested. In
later stages of coal field develop.. ment, ne\v shafts are sunk to tap the shallo\v
portions of the seam first until movements from
mine mouth to shipping point become so long it pays to sink still deeper sl1afts closer to the
shipping point, trading increasing depth for sl1orter overland hauls. In the real world, there
is seldom one coal seam of homogeneous quality> one assembly and shipping point,or
onemarket, Thus) observed xnining patterns appear highly irregular.Yet under the rational
cost conscious ness assumed in Wilson's ideal scheme}ifwe are given a location, the
expected sequence of development should tend to occur according to the location
of the coal and access costs.
In an exactly analogous way we could analyze
the exploitation of the soft wood forests in the United States as lu1nbermen moved across New
England, then the Lake states, a.:n.d finally the Pacific Northwest. Forest .stands closest to
markets rere e".Cploited first, and with the passage of time the more remote forests '\Vere
harvested. Similarly in ocean fishing and in whaling proximate resources and shallow sea
resources are exhausted before distant and deep sea efforts begin. ln oil exploration, Colonel
D1akes Pennsylvania discovery was followed by
other \V der and deeper searches.. Recently, petroleum deposits deep under the sea and in
remote northern Alaska have come into produc tion. In all such cases the effective economic
distance to market regulates the timing and extent of exploitatio11 at the location of a resource.
