Summer 2010

Parking at Carroll High School

Parking for all patrons, parents and students during registration dates of August 3 thru August 9 will be in the south
student lot, with entry at Door 13 which is nearest the football field. Door 13 is the main access point for all events at
Carroll High School.

All students driving to Carroll High School will enter the 10-12 building at Door 13 and park in the student lot. ALL
student parking will be restricted to the student lot with access to the building through Door 13 regardless of time of day,
day of the week, activity or event. This will allow patrons who do not know the building or facility to park without is-
sues, and will allow for teams, groups, choirs, bands and other school personnel to load buses and prep for events with-
out dealing with vehicle traffic or parking issues.

Parking for patrons who need to access Carroll Freshman Center for entry into the office during the school day may enter
Door 32 located in the southwest corner of the north lot, located between the two buildings, just north of the new gym.
This is the same lot off of Carroll Rd. located at the new stop light south of Carroll Creek. This is also the same lot
where students are dropped off in the mornings, and picked-up after school.

Parking for the Natatorium will continue to be available in the Natatorium lot, located just south of the Natatorium. Pa-
trons may access this lot via the new drive located west of the tennis courts off Carroll Rd.

Band practice will be on the new band practice area throughout the summer and fall. Students may park in the lot west
of the Freshman Center, South in the Natatorium lot, and also in the bus lot to allow for easy access for band practice.

IMPORTANT TESTING DATES

Parents and students should plan ahead regarding some important testing dates this fall:
The ISTEP will be given to seniors that have not passed the ISTEP, on the mornings of September 14, 15, 16
There are no “make-up” dates, so attendance on these dates is critical. 2010-11 end of course assessment
(Algebra I, English 10 and Biology I) dates will be announced in respective classes & to students involved.
P.S.A.T.
The P.S.A.T. is the “practice test” for the SAT as well as the mechanism for top performing juniors to
qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. The P.S.A.T. will be given to all college bound sophomores, free of
charge, on Wednesday morning, October 13. There will be no charge for sophomores taking this test due to
special state funding. Juniors may also take the P.S.A.T. for a fee of $13.00. It is of benefit to all college
bound sophomores and juniors to take this test as a means of gaining valuable insight for post-secondary
planning. Juniors will have the opportunity to pay the testing fee during registration August 3-9 as
well as until the deadline of September 20 in the Guidance office.
Non-college bound sophomores and juniors may request to take the ASVAB (free) rather than the P.S.A.T.
The ASVAB is administered by the military and focuses more on career and vocational training
information—related to both civilian and military careers. A recommendation may be made to a parent by
a student’s teacher or guidance counselor regarding the preferred test. The deadline for choosing to take
the ASVAB in place of the P.S.A.T. is September 20. There is no make-up date, so attendance is important.
Please contact Mrs. Lepper, Guidance Director, at 637-6913 or 338-5333 or Kathy.lepper@nacs.k12.in.us
with questions.

Student Schedules and Counselor Contact Information

Students who are taking summer school or correspondence classes (and these classes are still on their
Carroll schedules) need to call or email their counselor when they earn credit so that the class can be re-
moved from their 10-11 schedule. If leaving a message, the student needs to indicate the class to be
dropped and the class to be added. If this isn’t done students will have incorrect fee statements and sched-
ules, resulting in standing in line in the office to make schedule and fee changes.

Northwest Allen County
May 17, 2010

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

Beginning with the 2010 – 2011 school year, one dose of Menactra will be required for students in
grades 6 – 12.

Indiana State Law IC 20-30-5-18 requires that school systems provide important information to parents and
guardians of all students about meningitis and the vaccines available to prevent one type of this serious ill-
ness at the beginning of each school year. One type of meningitis is caused by bacteria called Neisseria
meningitidis. Infections caused by these bacteria are serious, and may lead to death.

Symptoms of an infection with Neisseria meningitidis may include a high fever, headache, stiff neck, nau-
sea, confusion and a rash. This disease can become severe very quickly and often leads to deafness,
mental retardation, loss of arms or legs, and even death. It can be spread through the air or by direct
contact with saliva from another person with the disease.

There is a vaccine (Menactra) that can prevent most cases of meningitis in people over the age of 2. The
United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends vaccination against this dis-
ease for all children and adolescents 11-18 years of age. Children ages 2 -10 who have sickle cell anemia or
problems with their immune systems should also receive this vaccine.

This is a new legal requirement (Indiana Administrative Code 410 IAC 1-1-1). All students entering grades 6-
12 will need to have a record of this immunization. Allen County Board of Health, SuperShot Clinics, and pri-
vate healthcare providers offer this vaccine.

Additional information about meningococcal disease can be found at:

NEW IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS FOR
2010-2011 School Year
Grades 6-12
2 doses of Varicella- (chickenpox) vaccine- on or after the first birthday separated by age-appropriate inter-
val or written history of disease. Parental written history of disease is acceptable proof of immunity. A signed
written statement from the parent/guardian indication month and year of disease is sufficient.

1 dose of Tdap- (tetanus-diptheria-acellular pertussis vaccine)- given on or after 10 years of age.

1 dose of MCV4- (meningococcal conjugate vaccine)

These immunizations are required by the State of Indiana for ALL STUDENTS GRADE 6-12. A copy of the
dates they received the vaccines needs to be turned in to your school nurse before the start of school this fall.
There will be exclusion from school without them approximately twenty days after school begins.
Shots can be attained through your family doctor or pediatrician. If these vaccines are not covered through
insurance Super Shot now charges 8.00 dollars per injection and sites in NW area are: Huntertown Resur-
rection Church, THIRD Thursday on each month 4 PM-7 PM. Also, Redimed/Business Health, 315 E. Cook
Rd., across from Northrup HS, each Saturday, 9 AM-12 Noon. Allen County Dept. of Health also has clinic
hours by appointment, call 449-7514.

The school must have a copy of your child’s completed vaccine record. You may send a copy the com-
pleted shot record to your student’s building this summer, in an envelope marked, “Attention: Nurse”, or turn
in at registration, or have your student turn it in first day of school.

Thank you for your attention to this important information!

ATTENDANCE
Regular school attendance is important for the success of your son/daughter in school. At the high school level, a
tremendous amount of information is given to students each day. If a student misses one class, he or she may fall behind
in that subject for an entire unit. If a student misses frequently, he or she is constantly playing catch up. For optimal
success in a high school academic program, regular attendance is vital.

We understand that there are situations that make it necessary for your son/daughter to be absent from school; however,
we hope that you, as parents, do all you can to encourage good attendance. Students do not receive “personal” days.
Family vacation days are included in the school policy to help provide some degree of flexibility for families when
trips are necessary. Once again this year, as it did last year, the School Board has built into the vacation calendar
the Wednesday prior to Thanksgiving (Nov. 24 2010 and the Friday prior to Spring Break (April 1, 2011). These
were granted as a way to help families with their travel plans during times when many take trips. (please refer to
article below, “Student Vacation Days”). Some examples of what family vacations are not intended for are: taking your
child shopping for a prom dress, having your child help with a garage sale, getting portraits taken, and going to a job
interview. Students are also expected to attend school before and after appointments when possible. If your
son/daughter says that a day is a “skip” day, that is untrue as no such day exists. For your student to qualify for
perfect attendance, he/she must be in attendance everyday, all day, receiving no late to schools or leaving early.

This past year we had 110 parents call their son/daughter in ill the day after the Superbowl which ended by 10pm
the night before. The Monday after Prom, we had almost 1/3 of the seniors’ parents call them in ill. We ask that
you refuse to make up an excuse about an absence for your son/daughter, and rather stress the importance of promptness
and regular attendance. It is our belief that by doing this you will be teaching them honesty and responsibility, which will
accompany them throughout their life.

STUDENT VACATION DAYS

NACS does not have school on the day before Thanksgiving and the Friday before spring
break. This change in the calendar was made due to high student absenteeism on those
days since many of our school families travel at those times of year. We request that
when planning family vacations for this coming school year, please do not extend
these school breaks. We believe it is not in the best interest of a student’s education to be absent from
school and also we try very hard to maintain a high rate of attendance. The attendance rate plays a major role
in today’s school accountability programs with awards such as Four-star school, Best Buy school, and state
and federal requirements. We need your help as parents in order to maximize education for your child and
maintain an excellent attendance rate in our school.

Parking Permits
Parking Permits will be sold in the fall at the cost of $30.00 for the school year. Families wishing to register a second car for a student
will be charged $20.00 for each additional vehicle. To purchase a Parking Permit the student will need the original Bureau of
Motor Vehicles registration, their driver’s license, and their signature for each permit. All student parking is restricted to the
student parking lot for all events & classes with entry at new Door 13. This includes all athletic practices, music, art, drama, choir,
dance, FFA or any other event or activity Monday thru Sunday.

Class Dues
Class dues of $4 are payable at registration. These funds support class activities, graduation, memorials for classmates, and the senior
gift..
SNAP/Lunch Account Payments
Please bring a separate check to deposit funds into your student(s) SNAP account at registration. You may write one check for
more than one student as long as they are in the same building. Carroll High School and Carroll Freshman Center are considered
separate building. Advance deposits keep the lunch line moving at a faster pace and thus allow all students more time to eat. It is
required that your student bring their SNAP card to lunch. Cards that need to be replaced due to loss, theft, defacement or mutilation
will cost $2.00 per card per incident. We do not allow cards to be used by anyone other than the student it was issued to.

At Carroll High School we offer 7 serving lines consisting of: Italian, Mexican, All-American, Salad/Specialty Bars, Grab-n-Go as
well as our traditional Charger Lunch o a daily basis.

NEW FOR 2010-2011

Students receiving benefits for Free & Reduced meals will receive benefits for lunch as usual and beginning in August 2010, will
receive benefits for breakfast too. Free/Reduced Breakfast will now be available at Carroll High School, Freshman Center, both
Middle Schools, Eel River, Huntertown and Arcola Elementariness. Watch our website for additional information.

Food Service Information

Students that were approved for Free or Reduced Meals at the end of the 2009/2010 school year will automatically carry over to the
new school year until Sept. 15 for meals, but not textbooks. Parents who desire meal or textbook assistance for the new 2010/2011
school year, may submit a new application any time after July 1 to Leeanne Koeneman at the Food Service Office at Carroll High
School. Please submit only one family application for all your students, no matter what NACS school they attend. Do not fill out a
separate application for each of your students, unless they are Foster Children.

If you choose to submit a new application before school Registration, go to the NACS Website: http://nacs.k12.in.us next, click on
District and then on Food Service Department, Free & Reduced Meal Information, Application for Free or Reduced Priced Meals and
Other Benefits, and print out the application.

The Direct Certification process is a computer matching system which we use to match the students that are in our data base with
those who are receiving TANF or Food Stamp benefits. If there is a match, we will send parents a letter telling them which students
automatically qualify for Free Meals and Textbooks for the entire school year. We will not need an application for these students.
Sometimes all the students in one family do not match. If you have a student that is not included on your letter, please complete an
application for that student. You should receive your Direct Certification letters prior to registration. If you do not receive a letter,
and you want to receive assistance, you must then submit an application.

You may submit your application at Carroll High School to the attention of Leeanne Koeneman, or you may fax both sides of the
application to the Food Service Office at 637-8767. Make sure you give a current telephone number and address where you can be
reached on the application, or we will not be able to process the application. If you have any questions, call Leeanne Koeneman at
637-8768.

ITEMS OF INTEREST

Hopefully everyone has had a restful and enjoyable summer. Most would probably agree that it is going too fast! As we get closer to
August and the start of another school year, it seems prudent to highlight some handbook policies that generate interest among all
parties involved.

 Book Bags, Tote Bags, and Large Satchels

Students are not allowed to carry book bags, tote bags, or other large bags in the school building during the school day. They may
carry them to and from school and leave them in their locker during the day. If a bag is large enough to hold a textbook, then
it must be kept in the student’s locker. This policy assists with safety and space concerns.

 Wireless Phones
Students are not permitted to use cell phones at school prior to 3:30 on school days (this includes the bus parking lot). Phones that
are seen or heard (whether in use or not) and violate the stated conditions will be confiscated.
Procedure for reclaiming phones:
1st offense: parental notification and parental pick up.
2nd offense: parental notification, parental pick up and Saturday School.
3rd offense: parental notification, parental pick up and 2 Saturday School.
4th offense: parental notification and further disciplinary action.

 Dress Code: As always, common sense should direct students when dressing for school and not current fashion. Tops, pants,
skirts, and shorts should be in compliance with school policy. Modesty is a good “rule of thumb” to follow. Remember that all
tops should have sleeves that at least cap the shoulder. Also, sagging or excessively baggy pants and shorts are inappropriate
(waistline should be at or above the hip bone).

 Grade Policies
 Rolling Grades:
High school courses/classes at Carroll High School now use a “rolling grade” or true semester grade when figuring student
grades. Students will be made aware of individual course/class grade reporting and grade figuring procedures at the
beginning of the semester and school year. A rolling grade may be most easily thought of as a grade that is figured on a
semester basis only, without a process of averaging the first nine weeks and the second nine weeks. In this process the grade
can more accurately represent student learning at any point in the semester and also allows for more formative assessment
early in the learning process.
 Unexcused absences:
Students are responsible for gathering missed work on their first day back to school whether they have class or not (block
days). All work is due the following day unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher. The work is to be
graded and a 15% deduction applied. Work that is not turned in shall receive a grade of “0”.
 ISS:
Teachers will be notified of student placement on the day of the incident (when feasible). Teachers are to send assignments to
the ISS room as soon as they receive notification. Assignments, quizzes, and tests will be due at the end of the day or per
teacher instructions. Due dates for long term assignments/projects remain unchanged. The work is to be graded and a 15%
deduction applied. Work that is not turned in shall receive a grade of “0”.
 OSS:
Teachers will be notified of student placement on the day of the incident (when feasible). If possible, work for the suspended
time period will be gathered prior to student departure. The receiving of all other assignments is the responsibility of the
student and parents. They are to make arrangements with the guidance office as to the picking up of said materials. Tests and
quizzes are to be made up on the first day the student returns to class or later pending teacher approval. The work is to be
graded and a 25% deduction applied. Work that is not turned in shall receive a grade of “0”.
 Truancies:
All work collected on the day of a student truancy (quizzes, tests, and projects included) will result in a “0” for said
assignment. Students are responsible for obtaining any assignments missed while truant.

 Family days
No family days should be taken the last five days of the semester.
No family days should be taken during ISTEP testing (Sept. 14, 15, 16 Mar. 8, 9, 10) and ECA Testing (first 2 weeks in
December and first 2 weeks in May)

Thank you in advance for your help in these areas. We appreciate the involvement of parents at school. By combining our efforts, we
can continue to make the high school experience rewarding and enjoyable.
