Summative Assessment Outline

Introduction

o Greet the viewer(s)

o Purpose to discuss the many ways in which technology affects the way I

will be conducting therapy sessions as a future speech-language pathologist

(SLP)

o Reasons for incorporate technology:

It makes therapy sessions more fun and engaging for the students

It permits easy and quick collection of data

It allows students to creatively express themselves

Body Paragraph 1

o Technology is very widespread children of all ages are using technology in

their everyday lives

o There are many apps an SLP can use in therapy:

ArtikPix - enables children to practice their speech using flashcard

and matching activities

Conversation Therpay - gives therapists more than 3,000 questions to

use as prompts, helping students aiming to make progress in

expressive language, pragmatics, problem-solving and cognitive

communication
Lets Be Social: Social Skills Development - can be utilized in therapy

for those experiencing developmental delays, social-emotional issues,

Autism Spectrum Disorders, and deafness

o The initial cost of the device and apps can be a setback, but the benefits of the

technology outweigh the negative aspects

Body Paragraph 2

o Technology use is very valuable for the SLP

o Create formative assessments for children faster (ex: Google Forms, Kahoot)

o Easier and faster data collection

o Some apps record data and track progress

o Not for everyone, but useful for those children who can work with

technology

Body Paragraph 3

o Many games with many purposes (ex: encouraging children to mimic facial

expressions, facilitating problem solving skills, and enhancing

communication)

o Using technological devices such as iPads or tablets for this use deems them

as an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device

o Vary in complexity

o These devices allow children to express their thoughts and ideas in a clear

way

o Once the child learns how to use the device effectively, then the child can

carryover its use into the classroom and into the real world
o The use of AACs will not adversely affect development of or return to speech,

it will actually enhance aspects of communication and facilitate natural

speech

Conclusion

o Technology use in speech therapy has many purposes

o A lot of research has to be done and careful consideration in selection of a

device

o Technology use can ultimately help children reach their goals faster and have

much more fun doing so

o How this class changed the ways I would teach:

Learned many different programs

Can implement them into any environment

Endless possibilities

Many standards to consider, but worth it
