Mon 23 International Day for the International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition is a
Remembrance of the United Nations observance worldwide but it is not a public holiday. On August 23,
Slave Trade and its 1998 Haiti celebrated its first International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave
Abolition Trade, while Senegal celebrated theirs on August 23 1999. 1791 saw the uprising in
Worldwide Santo Domingo (Haiti and Dominican Republic today) which led to the weakening
23 August 2010 of the Caribbean colonial system by rebellious slaves and later sparked an uprising
resulting in the abolishing of slavery and the island‟s independence. This day is
meant to pay tribute to the men and women who played a significant part in the
abolishment of slavery system, the slave trade, and colonialism.

Mining Week The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission commence a week of activities in
Guyana celebration of Mining Week 2010. The week was officially launched with a
23 -29 August 2010 reception and cocktail at the Regency Hotel. A Mining walk is next on the
agenda and an exhibition at the Girl‟s Guide Ground at the Square of the
Revolution. The exhibition runs from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 August 2010; and
will be open to the public from 8:00 hours to 20:00 hours. Several high-powered
earth moving equipment as said to be on display from major companies including,
MACORP and AINLIM, as well as displays and demonstrations of mining processing
equipment, in keeping with the mercury abatement programme. This programme
is aimed at introducing new types of processing equipment which will help
eliminate the use of mercury.

Wed 25 Young Leadership Forum The forum is geared towards young professionals from public and private
Bay Gardens Inn institutions involved in the agricultural sector and agricultural producers from
St Lucia different regions throughout Saint Lucia. Its purpose:- to enable them to acquire a
25 – 27 August 2010 global vision of agriculture thus enhancing their leadership skills; establishing them
in a position to promote a series of strategic dialogues from which they may derive
an in-depth view of those processes that influence agriculture and rural
development in the hemisphere. The aim is to enhance their abilities to grasp the
new roles they must play at national and international levels.

Fri 27 Anse-la-Raye Seafood Anse-la-Raye, traditionally a fishing village, Anse-la-Raye located on the west
Friday coast just south of Castries offers the spoils of its labour to all visitors; it‟s the
St. Lucia alternate Friday Party with its Seafood Friday. So whether you crave the catch of

the day or desire a delightful delicacy such as squid, octopus, shrimp, or lobster,
your taste is sure to be satisfied. Anse-La-Raye also boasts its ability to get you
grooving to a wide variety of Caribbean music. Anse-la-Raye, definitely another
hot spot every Friday night.

Sat 28 Pork-Kn2ockers Day The Guyana Geology and Mines Commission promises the „biggest ever” Pork-
Bartica, Guyana knocker day that showcases numerous competitions; such as tacoba race, jigging
29 August 2010 competition, batelling competition among others. Also on the agenda this year is
the launching of the book “The Illustrated History of the Pork-Knocker” produced
by Barrington Braithwaite and launching of two commemorative stamps featuring
two pork-knockers Cyrilda De Jesus and Dick Manning.
Dennerey Fish Festival There lies on the east coast of St. Lucia, another village with a fishing inheritance
St. Lucia that seeks to keep the balance of this beautiful island with its Fish Festival. Visitors
to this part of the island are greeted by the sea breeze that ushers the enticing
aroma of the many sea offerings prepared by the villagers. Soca, Dancehall
(reggae) and R&B are the preferred music amongst patrons and add to the
atmosphere of this wonderful festival.
