BDA 20303 MECHANIC OF MACHINES

1. A flat belt is used to transmit a torque from a pulley A to pulley B. The radius of each pulley
is 75mm and the coefficient of friction is 0.30. Determine the largest torque that can be
transmitted if the allowable tension is 4kN.
(183.1 Nm)

2. Refer below cross belt figure. Determine the minimum force F needed so that pulley A can
transmit a clockwise torque of 500 Nm without slipping? The coefficient of friction between
pulley A and belt is 0.4. Radius of pulley A is 400 mm and pulley B is 200 mm.
(Fmin = 1876.8 N)

3. An open belt drive connects two pulleys 1.2 m and 0.5 m diameter on parallel shafts 3.6 m
apart. The mass of belt per unit length is 0.9 kg and the maximum tension in it is not exceeding
2 kN. The 1.2 m pulley, which is the driver, runs at 250 rpm. Due to the belt slip on one of
the pulleys, the velocity of the driven shaft is only 500 rpm. If the coefficient of friction
between the belt and the pulley is 0.25, calculate
i) Torque on each of the two shafts
ii) Power transmitted.
iii) Power lost
iv) Efficiency of the drive.
4. An open belt running over two pulleys 280 mm and 640 mm diameter connects two parallel
shafts 3.5 meters apart and transmits 5 kW from the smaller pulley that rotates at 350 r.p.m.
Coefficient of friction between the belt and the pulley is 0.3 and the safe working tension is
25N per mm width. Determine the;
i) Minimum width of the belt
( b = 65.187 mm)
ii) Initial belt tension
(1.14 kN)
iii) Length of the belt required.
(8.454 m)

5. Figure Q1 shows a motor accelerating a hoist with diameter 0.9 m, through two sets of gear
reducing system. The number of teeth on gear 1, gear 2, gear 3 and gear 4 are 100, 350, 100
and 450 respectively. Moment of inertia for the motor shaft is 5 kgm2, middle shaft is 20 kgm2
and hoist shaft is 100 kgm2. The rope that is encircled on the hoist must capable to accelerate
up a load of M kg that is sliding on a 1 in 50 slope at acceleration of 3 m/s2. Friction on the
slope is 1000N and the total torque at motor required to raise the load is 1500Nm. Gear
efficiency of gear set 1-2 is 90% and gear efficiency for gear set 3-4 is 95% gear. The friction
torque effect at the middle shaft is TX = 150 Nm and at the hoist shaft is T y = 800 Nm. Find

i) gear ratio of the system

(1 / 15.75)
ii) equivalent moment inertia for a gear system, and
(7.29 kgm2)
iii) the total mass if the motor able to accelerate the load at acceleration of 3.0 m/s.
( 5401 kg)
6. A gear box has an input speed of 1500 rpm clockwise and an output speed of 300 rpm
anticlockwise. The input power is 20 kW and the efficiency is 70%. Determine the
following;
i. The gear ratio
ii. The input torque
iii. The output power
iv. The output torque
v. The holding torque
(-318.3 Nm anticlockwise)

7. An electric motor is used to accelerate a hoist of diameter 450 mm through a set of reducing
gear. The number of teeth for the motor and hoists gear is 30 and 130 respectively. Moment
of inertia for the motor shaft is 3 kgm2 and 25 kgm2 for the hoists shaft. The motor have a
rated power of 3 kW that can produce maximum speed of 150 rpm. Given the gear efficiency
is 95%. If the friction torque for the motor shaft is 10 Nm and for hoists shaft is 50 Nm, find
the maximum load that can be lifted with acceleration of 0.2 m/s2.
8. The axes of two parallel shafts are to be 600 mm apart approximately, and have to be
connected by spur gears, having a circular pitch of 30 mm. If RPM A is 200 and that of B is
600, find;
i. The number of teeth on each gear.
(NTA = 96 Teeth, NTB = 32 Teeth)
ii. Pitch diameter of each gear.
(300.556 mm)
iii. Circular pitch of each gear.
(20.9998 mm)
iv. Exact centre to centre distance apart, of the two shafts.
(611.13 mm)
v. If the tangential pressure between the teeth of gears, acting at the point of contact
of the two pitch circles is 18 kN, find the power transmitted by A.
(172.793 kW)
