Introduction

The U.S. financial meltdown of 2008 is mainly due to the

irresponsibility practices of banks, lenders and brokers. It all started with
the U.S. housing bubble which began in 2005. It allowed higher risk
borrowers to acquire home mortgages and fulfill the American dream of
owning a home. The mortgage lenders could offer sub prime and
adjustable rate mortgages (ARM) within the borrower’s budget. The
final interest rate would depend on the Federal Reserve lending interest
rate at that time of maturity. Many borrowers took these mortgages,
because most thought the economy was going to rebound after the 9/11
and Dot Net eras. They also thought their paychecks were going to
increase, due to raises and promotions of a revived economy. They then
could afford the possible higher interest rates of these types of loans.

The issue: The economy never did rebound and those borrower’s
paychecks were staying the same or even less, but most started to lose
their jobs. The hardest hit areas with the largest foreclosure rates were
cities like Las Vegas - Nevada; where you had unemployment rates at all
time record levels. This was true in other cities also like Fort Myers,
Miami – Florida, Riverside, Merced, San Bernardino, Ontario –
California and Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale - Arizona. Many families and
individuals tried to save their homes; living on savings or credit cards,
cashing in their 401Ks, cutting back except for essential items, working
minimum wage jobs, but that wasn't enough. The majority of the banks
and lendors would not renegotiate their home mortgage interest rate.
How can defaults on home mortgages bring down major U.S. financial
institutions? There were the investors who came in and who not just
bought a couple of homes, but in tens and hundreds. It was like house of
cards and the bottom cards were the defaulted sub prime and adjustable
rate mortgages. It isn't over yet, Standard & Poor's (credit rating agency)
predicts over 1.8 million homes will be foreclosed in 2010 and beyond.

This looked similar to the irresponsible mentality of the financial

lenders, banks and brokers during the Dot Net era - in the late 90's. The
brokers used a three step (cookie cutter) process, to bring in huge
amounts of cash. 1) You create a Dot Net business plan. 2) You have a
small number of investors fund the initial startup. 3) You go public
(IPO); the brokers and the initial investors make millions of dollars.
They didn’t care if the company was viable or not. It was like the gold
rush days of the past; some got very rich, but most had empty pockets to
show for. There were a few companies who survived the Dot Net era,
but they were the exceptions. They also provided realistic services and
products to their customers.

After the Dot Net era; the brokers again found a new way to bring in
cash, it was the overseas investors. To make the investment deals
enticing, they packaged Sub Prime and ARM (high risk) loans with
Prime (lower risk) loans. That’s all it took and soon everyone was on the
greed band wagon, even respected financial institutions like Fannie Mae,
Freddie Mac and Lehman Brothers. The CEOs liked it, because on paper
they were creating huge profits for their companies and the multi-million
dollar year-end bonuses didn’t hurt either. Greed is greed, but financial
common sense should take priority. The CEOs of respected financial
institutions should know the difference and pursue the latter. In the Bible
it says “For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” and many
people will come to understand those words of wisdom, after these
difficult years have past. At no fault of their own; millions will lose their
homes, cars, jobs and their self dignity.

It reveals, if man doesn’t learn from history he then will repeat the same
mistakes. We must be on guard always and keep in check those
undesirable attributes of man, like greed or the love of money. Our
society has changed over the years and we must try to bring back
important basic values, one of these:

The love of family, over the love of money.

Chapter 1 Campaign Speech

It is a Saturday afternoon with clear blue skies on

September 16, 2008 in Golden, Colorado; the presidential hopeful
Barack Obama looks at the teleprompter and begins to speak:

“Over the last few days, we have seen clearly what’s at

stake in this election. The news from Wall Street has
shaken the American people’s faith in our economy. The
situation with Lehman Brothers and other financial
institutions is the latest in a wave of crises that have
generated tremendous uncertainty about the future of
our financial markets. This is a major threat to our
economy and its ability to create good-paying jobs and
help working Americans pay their bills, save for their
future, and make their mortgage payments.”

He continues with his speech to a large cheering crowd, many holding

campaign signs. It's more like a rock concert, than a campaign rally.

“In February of 2006, I introduced legislation to stop

mortgage transactions that promoted fraud, risk or
abuse. A year later, before the crisis hit, I warned
Secretary Paulson and Chairman Bernanke about the
risks of mounting foreclosures and urged them to bring
together all the stakeholders to find solutions to the sub
prime mortgage meltdown. Senator McCain did nothing.
I don’t want to wake up in four years to find that more
Americans fell out of the middle-class, and more
families lost their savings. I don’t want to see that our
country failed to invest in our ability to compete, our
children’s future was mortgaged on another mountain of
debt, and our financial markets failed to find a firmer

footing. This time – this election – is our chance to stand

up and say: enough is enough!”
He finishes his speech to the large enthusiastic Colorado crowd.
“We can do this because Americans have done this
before. Time and again, we’ve battled back from
adversity by recognizing that common stake that we have
in each other’s success. That’s why our economy hasn’t
just been the world’s greatest wealth generator – it’s
bound America together, it’s created jobs, and it’s made
the dream of opportunity a reality for generation after
generation of Americans.
Now it falls to us. And I need you to make it happen. If
you want the next four years looking just like the last
eight, then I am not your candidate. But if you want real
change – if you want an economy that rewards work, and
that works for Main Street and Wall Street; if you want
tax relief for the middle class and millions of new jobs;
if you want health care you can afford and education so
that our kids can compete; then I ask you to knock on
some doors, and make some calls, and talk to your
neighbors, and give me your vote on November 4th. And
if you do, I promise you – we will win Colorado, we will
win this election, and we will change America together.”
The presidential candidate Barack Obama waves to the loud cheering
crowd and leaves the stage.
A senator’s aid is in the audience and she is writing on a notepad. She
avoids being recognized and leaves with the large crowd, back to her
car. The aid drives her rental car on the long trip back to the Denver
International Airport. She with one carry on bag gets on a direct flight
back to Washington D.C.

The leaves are changing colors for upcoming fall in the Washington
D.C. area. The traffic is always heavy around the D.C. beltway, during
morning and evening rush hours. The beltway is a freeway called I-495
that actually circles around Washington D.C. You must plan ahead and
know shortcuts in this city, to avoid long commutes to and from work.
There are lush green parks in the area, which provide a quick get away
from the hectic crowds and traffic. The wealthy are able to take weekend
trips to nearby resorts, to help relieve the stress of everyday life in the
Washington D.C. area.
Even though car traffic can cause stress at times; Washington D.C. has
great sights, libraries and museums. You can spend weeks at the
Smithsonian museums and not see everything. It is not just one museum,
but many divided into categories: Air and Space, History, Natural
History, American Indian and more. It might take one full day at the
National Gallery of Art, as you walk through and see priceless paintings.
You could actually spend a lifetime in the Library of Congress, if you
are an avid reader.
A senator with his aid, are in a booth at a restaurant in George Town’s
exclusive shopping mall. The older senator with his white hair and
glasses looks respectable, with his thousand plus dollar suit. His aid is a
young looking female, smart and beautiful looking. She is a blonde with
blue eyes, wearing an expensive business suit with designer shoes. The
aid gets out her notepad and says
“I'm getting concerned with new financial polices that
might take place, if he gets elected.”
The senator says “I feel the same way.”
She says “Our business clients are getting nervous.”
He replies “Tell them it's all under control. It will take
place before the election.”
The aid “The timeframe is moved up?”

He says “Yes it has. We expect it to be delivered in mid

September.”
She gets up to leave, looks back and says “I will see you
tonight at my place.”
The senator says “Do want you Chinese or Italian takeout?”
She replies “I’m in the mood for Chinese.”
He responds “Yes love, you got it.”
She exits the restaurant. The senator is still sitting in the booth, he makes
cell phone call. The aid is then seen in front of the shopping mall, she
gets into a limo with shopping bags.

Chapter 2 Source Code

Two men in dark suits are sitting at a large expensive office table with a
table lamp in the center. The walls are sound proof glass, with a news
room type environment; showing on monitors are live feeds of CNN,
MSN and BBC, various graphs/maps, video feeds of an empty desert. On
the MSN news feed monitor says “and the top news; fearing a financial
crisis worldwide, the Federal Reserve reversed course on Tuesday and
agreed to an 85 billion dollar bailout that would give the government
control of the troubled insurance giant AIG.”

A sharp looking older man gets off the phone and picks up a folder from
the table, he opens it.

“What is the situation with the source code?”

The younger agent straightens his tie and looks somewhat nervous, says:

“We are still waiting.”

The senior agent says:

“The time table is moved up... Get on it!”

In a nice older suburb of Los Angeles; John Moore, a college

student is sipping tea in his kitchen. He puts his laptop into a book bag.
He turns off the television and walks out the front door of his older small
house. John is a handsome man with glasses in his mid twenties, dressed
in well-worn college type clothes. A city bus pulls up near his front
sidewalk. John gets in with his book bag and shows his bus ID to the
driver. The city bus is driving through L.A. with another beautiful
sunset, palm trees are swaying with a slight ocean breeze. John looks out
the window at the familiar scenery, but tries to find something new on
each trip.

John Moore was raised in Los Angeles; he was an only child. His father
named “Bill” was a L.A. police officer and his mother named “Gloria”,
was a part-time nurse. He had a great teen life, of surfing at the local
beaches and snow boarding in the winter at nearby resorts. John got
interested in programming, after getting an Intel computer for his 14th
birthday. His parents couldn’t afford the software programs he wanted,
so he started writing his own. John quickly learned C and C++ program
languages and that open a whole new world. His surfing and skiing days
were now his second hobbies, compared to computer programming. He
would spend entire weekends writing programs for fun and school
projects.

John went to public libraries and book stores to find the latest trends in
computer programming. This would help him in other areas of school,
like math and science. He made straight A’s in high school and was
considered a nerd, by some clicks at school. It never bothered him,
because he had great home life with his parents. That made it very
difficult though, when his dad suddenly died of a massive heart attack
while helping with maintenance at a local Catholic church. His dad and
mom were members of the church for over thirty years. It was a great
loss, but his mother helped him get through this difficult time. She raised
him alone and never remarried. His mother would later died of cancer.

The bus, after a half hour trip pulls up near the city college main
entrance. John thanks the driver and gets out with his book bag. He
walks towards the technical college main entrance. John enters the main
glass doors and begins walking down the hall with newly waxed floors,
some students are greeting him.

A student named Steve notices him “How is it going,

John?”

John says “I’m good! Steve. How’s the Java class going?”

Steve replies “I’m pulling an ‘A’, so far.”

John says “Really Steve, that’s good.”

Steve with a half smile says “Yea so far, I've really MacGyver
that one.”

He looks at his watch "Got to go!”

Steve dashes into a nearby classroom. John keeps walking down the hall,
towards his C++ programming class.

John makes eye contact with familiar, beautiful female college student
named Janet Jones. She is in her late twenties, but looks younger. Janet
Jones comes from a military family. Her father named “Kendal” is a
retired Air Force officer and her beautiful mother named “Linda” was a
stay-at-home mom. Janet has two other sisters “Kim” and “Tina” which
are all older than she is.

The family traveled about every four to five years to different military
bases in the U.S. and a few overseas. She liked the travel to different
countries with various cultures and meeting new people. Janet never had
the problem of making new friends, being beautiful like her mom. She is
a brunette, striking features with deep green eyes. The issue growing up,
she could never tell who were her true friends and those who just those
wanted to be with the popular girl.

She was a cheerleader in high school and the home coming queen. She
always had the pick of boyfriends at school. Janet did go through a rough
time in her junior year, that’s when her parents got a divorce. She stayed
with mother, while her dad moved to Monterey Bay to retire. Janet took
trips up north to see her dad, during school breaks and holidays. Her

sisters both moved out of the house while she was in high school, one got
married and the other went to college in the east.

Janet eventually she moved out after high school and worked at
exclusive night clubs as a hostess. She decided after a few years on her
own, she wanted to go back to school. Janet was tired of the night life
and saw no future in the L.A. club scene. She was always good at math
and her college guidance counselor recommended a career in computers.

Janet sees John by the classroom door and walks up to him. John is
curious why she wants to talk to him.

Janet says “Hey John! How are you?”

John avoids eye contact with Janet, while she is talking to him.

“I’m fine Janet. How is the class going?”

Janet replies “Could be better. Can you send me the code

for last week’s program problem? It was an integer array,
right? I want to see how you programmed it.”

John eyes light up “Yes it was... No problem about the code.

Is your e-mail the same, as the last class we had together?"

“Oh yea it’s the same, Thanks!”

Janet then turns around and talks with an attractive male student. John
avoids both of them and goes into the classroom.

Students are sitting at desks some with laptops, talking with each other.
Janet and John are in the class, sitting apart. An adjunct (part-time)
college instructor Phil Thomas is at the front of class room with
overhead projector, slides, laptop and text book. He is dressed in beige

Dockers with a well worn blue blazer. He is not wearing tie, just a plain
white shirt. He is getting ready to lecture on software programming.

Phil Thomas is married with a daughter. He is forty two years old. His
wife is named “Julie” and his daughter is named “Angela”. Phil is from
San Jose, California and went to high school there. He was never the
athletic type, but was in the school’s computer club. Phil got interested
in computers after hearing about Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald
Wayne who started the "Apple Company". They began the Apple
Company in a city just west of San Jose, called "Cupertino". They built
computer kits in their garages and sold them. Phil actually met them,
when he went to one of the Homebrews Computer meetings in the
eighties.

He eventually went to Stanford University and got his computer B.S.

engineering degree. Phil landed a job at Intel in San Jose and was
making good money. He met Julie at a New Year’s Eve party and they
got married shortly afterwards. They had their daughter "Angela" two
years later. Everything was going great, until the Dot Net bubble crashed
in the late nineties. He was laid off at Intel and to find I.T. work they
moved to Los Angeles. Phil now works for the L.A. Port Authority as a
software engineer and teaches at the city technical college to make ends
meet. He is currently separated from his wife and daughter.

Phil with a raised voice to the class says. “I’m sending the
roster around, check your contact information and initial
that you’re here.”

Kevin a student, sitting near the front says “Uh, Mr.

Thomas did you get my e-mail today?”

Phil who is slightly irritated, replies “No, Kevin. Did you

send it to my work or home address?”

Kevin says “I sent it to your work address about 3:30

today.”

Phil replies “I left my day job, early. Remember class, if you

want your homework returned to you when we meet. I must
receive it at least two days in advance, to get full credit. I
hope everyone remembered we are having a programming
quiz next week.”

Students moan and talk among themselves.

Karen, a young female student says “Mr. Thomas on our final

project can we work together in groups? I’m having a tough
time getting started.”

Phil looks at her “Karen no problem, except your code cannot

be the same as your partner’s. Class, you only have five weeks
left. So I suggest if you’re having difficulty with your project.
Get with a group or e-mail me and I will do what I can."

Janet turns around, glances at John and smiles. He gives a slight smile,
back to Janet. Phil also says to the class

“Remember, there is also extra credit available in this course.

Provide me a compiled C++ executable of the programming
problem that I mentioned in the first week. You can hand it in
to me or the class assistant.”

Kevin, the student says “Mr. Thomas in the years you have
been teaching, how many students have actually solved the
extra point problem?”

Phil replies “Let’s see... I’ve been teaching here three years,
so far a total of seven students have solved it. By the way,
John our class assistant solved it in a record time of one week.”

Some students cheer, turn around and look at John Moore. He looks
embarrassed with the attention.

Phil looks at Kevin “But don’t let that discourage you.”

Kevin replies “Right, I can’t even get my homework turned

in on time.”

Some of the students laugh, Phil smiles at Kevin. He turns on the

overhead projector and says

“Ok. Let’s get started.”

Phil begins to lecture on programming and students start to take notes.

John setups his laptop and begins typing. Janet begins to take interest
and starts listening to Phil.

The rush hour traffic begins to backup all the major freeways,
throughout the City of Angels. Leisure boats are returning back to
Marina del Rey harbor, as sunset ends in Los Angeles. The valet parking
assistants begin their shift, when the evening dinner crowds arrive at
their favorite restaurants.

Phil stops talking; he looks at the clock. It shows 8:58pm. Most of the
students are starting to look fatigue, except for a few. He speaks to the
class

“Are there any questions? Ok, were done. Remember next

Monday is a holiday. We have no class on that day. Please
give John your homework, before you leave.”

Students talking among themselves are exiting the class room, giving
John their homework. Janet is talking with another attractive male
student, as she leaves the room. John Moore makes his way to Phil, then
hands him a stack of papers and then a CD ROM.

John says “Mr. Thomas, here is today’s homework and also I

have the source code to the programming issue; you gave me
four weeks ago. Sorry, it took so long.”

Phil replies “Thanks John, I’ll take a look at it and let you
know.”

John says “That was a tough one, but I believe it will work. Your
initial code helped me stay on the right path... thanks.”

Phil pats John on the back and they leave the classroom talking.

Chapter 3 The Project

John back at home, he is fixing tea in his well organized and clean
kitchen. He moves from the kitchen to his computer desk with his cup.
John starts to read his various e-mails on his laptop. His eyes fix on an
e-mail that is titled: “Class Project”. He opens the e-mail and starts to
read it.

“Hello John, how are you? I would like to meet with you on
Saturday at Starbucks. I need help on the class project; e-mail
me and let me know, Janet.”

John starts typing a response on his laptop as he sips his tea.

Traffic begins to ease all over Los Angeles, as people return to their
homes. A single family home in a middle class neighborhood, has lights
on inside. In a somewhat disarray home with computer books, food
containers and magazines in various areas. There is a LCD monitor and
keyboard on a large hardwood desk. There is also a picture of Phil's wife
and young daughter in a sliver frame.

Phil is talking on the phone “I think we got it... No, I compiled

the code myself, ran the executable and it looks good so far. I
can e-mail the program and source code to you tonight.”

Phil listens and responds “No e-mail, how come?... Ok, it will
be in my mailbox at 9:00am… No it's ok, the mailman doesn't
deliver until around 11:00... Bye.”

The next morning a black SUV parked on a street corner near Phil’s
home. Two men in suits are sitting inside. They both look like
ex-military types. The passenger looks at his wrist watch, it shows
9:05am.

He says “Let’s go.”

The black SUV pulls up to Phil’s mailbox on the street, an arm reaches
inside and pulls out a stuffed envelope. Phil is standing, drinking coffee
in his kitchen and looks outside from the window. He sees a black SUV
drive away from his mailbox.

John at his home in front of mirror, he is trying on different clothes with

some shirts on the floor. He finally finds the right combination to wear.
John exits his home and waits for the city bus. The bus arrives with a
small number of riders, since this is Saturday. John gets on. The bus
takes a different route than what he is used too; after a short trip, John
gets off. He is not sure if he is at the right stop. John looks and notices
the Starbucks across the street.

A small crowd is drinking coffee and sitting in various places. There are
some with laptops typing, with background music playing. Janet is sitting
in the corner, sipping on her cappuccino. John walks in and scans the
room. Some people notice John, but eventually they ignore him.

Janet sees him and says “John, over here!”

He smiles, then walks over and sits at her table.

She says “How are you? Can I order you something?”

He replies “No thanks, I have to leave soon.”

Janet says “You look nice. I like that shirt”

John responds “Thanks, but no comparison to the way you

look... I mean your looking nice too.”

Janet with a smile “Thank you... We go back a ways at the

college. Let’s see… we’ve had what, four classes together?”

He replies “No, it was actually five classes. Do you remember

Mr. Walker’s class?”

She says “Yes, I do. What a nightmare, I almost dropped that

class.”

John says “He was something else, but I’m finally seeing
daylight at the end of the tunnel.”

She with a curious look “What, you’re about to graduate?”

John replies “Yes, one more class and I’m out of there,
history, adios and bye-bye.”

He tries some dance moves while sitting, with hip-hop music playing in
the background. Some people sitting nearby, start to stare. Janet smiles
and then laughs, as she watches him. John stops a little embarrassed, but
he smiles.

John says “How many do you have left?”

She replies “I have two more, that’s if I can pass this

programming class. I’m hoping you can give me some
pointers on the project.”

He says “I’ll do what I can Janet, but sorry I have to work

today. Why don’t you come by my house tomorrow
afternoon, around 1:30?”

Janet replies “Great, e-mail me your address and I’ll see

you Sunday.”

A tall handsome man at the counter across the room, notices Janet. His
name is Kirk; he is a wealthy, executive type. Janet knows him from
when she worked as a L.A. club hostess. He pays for his espresso and
walks towards her table. He smiles as he approaches.

Kirk with an assertive voice, says “Janet? I thought that

was you!”

Janet with a coy look replies “Kirk, I saw you last week. You
were with what’s her name, Sarah?”

Kirk with a smirk smile, he gives a shrug. He sits at the table. John starts
to look uncomfortable.

Kirk says “What are you doing tonight?”

John gets up, while Kirk and Janet are talking and starts to exit out of
Starbucks. Janet notices that he is leaving out the front entrance.

She with a raised voice, “John, I’ll see you tomorrow.”

John with a slight smile, waves and exits out the entrance.

Kirk says “Hard up for dates these days?”

She is slightly irritated, replies “That’s mean.”

Kirk says “I’m kidding! He looks like a nice guy.”

Janet says “John is a friend, in my college class. I've known

him for years. You know he’s very sharp.”

He responds “Really.. About tonight; let’s first do dinner at

Cézanne's. Then we’ll stop by the club, like old times. I’ll
pick you up at...”

A sharp looking, computer programmer with an ID badge attached to his

shirt pocket, is looking at expensive LCD monitor and types in some
characters from the keyboard. The LCD monitor displays 12 rows of 7
alpha numeric characters in 3 columns each, start to change. The alpha
numeric characters are appearing one at time in a single row on the
bottom of the screen. He gets wide eye, when it stops after seventeen
seconds. The programmer gets a tan folder from a combination lock
briefcase. He opens folder and with his finger scans alpha numeric
characters printed on the paper. He moves his finger to each of the
seventeen characters on the screen. The monitor displays:

The programmer pickups his office phone and dials an extension

number.

He says “This is Steve, we got a match.”

It’s another perfect night in L.A. with the temperature in the mid 70’s,
there is a slight cool breeze coming from the west. A popular nightclub
is busy with a line of people, many dressed to impress. They are waiting
on the keeper of the rope, he is a large man dressed in a black suit that
decides who to let in the exclusive nightclub. Janet and Kirk are already
in; they been there for hours, dancing. The spot lights are moving with
the beat of the music. Janet leans over and talks to Kirk.

“So where is Sarah, tonight?”

Kirk pauses, then says “I’m not sure.. You know we're
just friends.”

The music changes, Janet and Kirk start to slow dance together.

Kirk softly says “I live just seven minutes away.”

She talks closely to his ear “Do you have any Russian
vodka? I like martinis.”

Kirk responds “I just bought some today.”

Janet grabs his hands, slowly leans back and says

“Let’s go!”

They both exit off the dance floor, holding hands as they leave the club.
Janet and Kirk are kissing and waiting on the parking valet. The car pulls
up and he tips the valet. They get in and drive off in a new Porsche
convertible. They are laughing, driving down a L.A. city street with the
growl of the sports car as it speeds up. He makes a sharp turn on a side
street, into an upper class neighborhood.

In an older suburb of Los Angeles, there are lights on in a small house.

John is sipping on tea in front of his laptop screen, reading his e-mails.
His eyes fix on an e-mail title: “Program Solution”. John opens the
e-mail and starts to read it. It is from his college professor, Phil Thomas.

“Hello John, I looked over your code solution and it looks

making drinks. He walks over to Janet, holding two martini glasses.

Kirk says “Here you go, beautiful.”

Phil is at home talking on the phone, with traditional jazz music playing
on his older stereo system. He is eating Chinese takeout with chopsticks
from the box. Phil says

“It’s confirmed, right? .... No, I had help.... Who? My class

assistant.... No, I assume he has a copy.... Why?... Ok I’ll
talk with you later, but remember; I want the Puerto Vallarta
all-inclusive package, not Cancun.”

Phil looks perplexed, hangs up the phone. He sits down on the couch,
finishing his Chinese food. He grabs his remote from the coffee table
and turns on the television. Phil switches through different channels until
he finds the one he wants. He laughs, after watching a few minutes of a
Saturday Night Live skit. Phil continues eating his Chinese takeout.

Chapter 4 Sunday

It’s a quiet Sunday morning in L.A., with some joggers who are out
running in the neighborhoods. Sprinklers are on, with water dripping on
the concrete sidewalks; keeping the immaculate green lawns and tropical
plants watered. Janet and Kirk are in bed asleep, with strands of sunlight
shining across the room. A cell phone softly rings. Kirk wakes up and
gets the cell phone from the dresser. He looks at Janet on the bed and she
looks asleep. Kirk quietly walks into the living room; the bedroom door
is partially open.

Kirk with a low voice “Hi Sarah.... No, you didn’t wake me....
I miss you too.... Oh no, I went out with some friends.... Yes,
I’ll meet you for lunch ... See you there, bye love.”

Janet is still lying on the bed, but she is awake and listening.

The sound of birds is heard from the trees, with kids playing in the
neighbor's yard. Phil walks out to his mailbox on the side of his street.
He reaches in and pulls out a stuffed brown envelope. He sees it’s from a
local travel agency. Phil looks around and then goes back to his house.

Janet looks weary and walks up to John’s house, which has a lush lawn
and tropical plants; a nice shade tree covers the front porch. She walks
up the front steps and knocks on the solid wood door. John in the
bathroom looks in the mirror and quickly combs his hair. He enters the
living room and answers the front door.

John with a smile says “Hello, glad you could make it...
Come in and sit down.”

Janet comes in and sits down in an older large comfortable chair.

Janet speaks with a small voice “Hello John, I’m a little under
the weather so don’t mind me.”

He replies “Up late, last night? I know, I’ll fix us some orange
tea that’ll do the trick.”

John walks into the kitchen and starts fixing the tea. Janet is noticing the
books on the shelves, antique furniture, wooden cross and oil paintings
hanging on the walls.

She says “John, you have a nice home. It’s very peaceful.”

John with a raised voice “Thanks, it was my mother’s home.

After she died a few years ago, I decided to live here. It’s quiet
and I like the neighbors.”

She is looking at several Chagall-like oil paintings on the wall.

Janet with a normal voice “I’m sorry about your mother...

John, who’s the artist that did the paintings? They are very
beautiful.”

John replies, as he finishes making the tea “I did those a few

years ago. I find it relaxes me and clears my mind; I haven’t
painted since then.”

He slowly walks into the room with two cups of tea and struggles not to
spill them.

Janet says “Do you need help?”

He replies “No I’m fine, here you go. This should fix you
right up.”

Janet takes the cup and sips it; she holds back tears and looks down.

John looks concerned “Is the tea ok? It might be too

strong.”

She looks up at John and forces a smile “No John, it's

perfect.”

John sits down in a chair next to her. He sets his cup on a side table.

He says “So how long have you been working on your

degree?”

Janet replies, after taking a drink says “Let’s see I started

college five years ago, after my parents got a divorce. So
that would make it three years total. It’s been tough working
days and going to school at night, but I’m getting there. John
thanks for your help.”

He replies “No problem, I guess we better get started.”

John gets up, takes Janet’s hand and helps her up. They go to the
computer desk area. He gets a chair for Janet. They both sit down and
John power ups his laptop. Just outside of John’s house a black SUV is
parked across the street. Two men are inside; one man has a camera with
telephoto lens and motions to the driver to go. The SUV quickly drives
down the street, with kids playing on the sidewalk.

The street performers are attracting Sunday crowds on Venice beach.

People are walking their dogs, eating and drinking. One performer is
expressive as he breaks bottles on the side walk and then proceeds to
walk on them. Sailboats can be seen, as they head out of the L.A.
harbors across the shimmering ocean. Couples are relaxing under large
palm trees, on green grass in the shade.

In news room type environment with video feed of a desert as sunset

begins; two men sitting at a large office table. On the CNN monitor, a
news reporter says “There was more grim news from the housing sector
today. The Commerce Department reported construction of new homes
and apartments fell more than six percent in August. It's now at the
lowest point since 1991.”

The senior agent opens a briefcase with two tan folders and a CD ROM
inside. The younger agent is sitting across the table, waiting for a
response.

Senior agent says “It was confirmed, right?”

Younger agent replies “Yes, we verified it.”

He replies “Have we updated the financial program?”

The younger agent looks nervous, says “Not yet, we’re still
going through initial beta testing. We have an issue though.”

Senior agent “What’s that?”

He says “Initially we had just one person to deal with, the

college professor. We were going to stage an accident, while
he was on vacation in Mexico. He changed the scenario by
letting his assistant help solve the programming problem.”

The senior agent scans through the two tan folders with John and Phil
pictures attached to papers on the inside. The papers have the home
address and personal information.

He says “That makes two exposed?”

Chapter 5 Professional Help

John is taking a nap before his evening college class. His bedroom door
is closed and then heavy smoke enters through the bottom. It starts to fill
the room. John starts to cough and then wakes up. He sees the smoke and
starts towards the bedroom door. He opens the door and flames are
everywhere with heavy smoke. John quickly closes the door. He goes to
the bedroom window and tries to open the window. The window is stuck
and smoke in the room is getting worse. John grabs a small chair and
smashes the window. He struggles to escape out the window, but cannot.
John collapses due to the smoke. A neighbor pulls him out and lays him
on the lawn.

Neighbor says “John! John! Are you ok? Can you hear me?”

He begins CPR and another neighbor calls '911' with their cell phone.
After ten minutes emergency vehicles arrive in front of John’s house.
Firemen quickly get out, but they stop because fire has completely
engulfed the small house. They have a despaired look, knowing they
can’t do anything, but contain the fire. A spotlight shines on the burning
house and front lawn, from a news helicopter flying above.

The halls are almost empty, because classes have begun at the city
college. In Phil’s class, students are sitting at desks; some talking with
each other with instructor at the front. A student walks in the class and
says with a raised voice

“Did you here about John Moore? There was a fire and his
house was totaled.”

Janet with a worried voice, says “Oh no! He is all right?”

The student responds “All I know, he’s alive and they took
him to a hospital.”

Phil speaks to Janet “Did you say Sunday?”

Phil looks at his watch, then at the class. Phil with raised voice, says

Phil leaves the class room; he walks down the hall and enters through a
single door. Phil is in the break lounge, watching the news on the TV.
After short period, a news report of John’s house fire begins. The news
anchor, says

“A three alarm fire completely destroyed a small home in the

older Glen Oaks division. The home owner was apparently
trapped in the house, but neighbors safely pulled him out.”

A news helicopter video shows the burning house, emergency vehicles

with firemen, paramedics and policemen under the street lights; a black
SUV is seen exiting the area. The news anchor continues talking

“The young male victim was taken to St. Andrews hospital and
currently he is in stable condition. We do not have his full name
at this time. In other news....”

Phil says “It can’t be!”

He turns off the breakroom television and reaches for his cell phone.

A nurse is at her work station, reading medical charts as she begins her
shift. In one of the many critical care rooms, John is a sleep on the bed
with drip bags and monitors attached. The hallways are dark, since
visiting hours are over.

In the break lounge at the city college, Phil is on the cell phone

“Hello Rick, this is Phil..... No, your sister and I are still
separated.... Thanks Rick, me too. You still have your private
security business, right?... I have a problem.”

Students are sitting at their desks, some talking with each other; Phil
walks in and with a raised voice says

“Class, a personal matter has come up. So we will not be

having the quiz or even class tonight; I’m sorry, but I need
to go.”

Some of the students looking confused, start talking to each other.

Phil continues talking “You can get with your project groups
or work in the computer lab. We will see you next class.. and
Janet Jones, I need to talk with you.”

Students start to leave the class. Janet walks up the narrow isle between
desks, to meet with Phil.

Phil says “Can we meet for coffee in a hour to talk. This is

about John Moore.”

Janet with a worried look, replies “Is he all right?”

Phil responds “He’s at Saint Andrews hospital and is in

stable condition. Here’s the address of the coffee shop.”

Phil hands her a small piece of paper. He continues to speak

“My brother-in-law Rick, is also going to be there.”

Janet looks confused and uneasy.

Phil says “I explain it all later.”

Two black SUVs are driving in tandem down the Los Angeles 110
freeway, one puts on his right blinker and the other moves behind him.
They both drive off an exit ramp.

A small crowd is sitting in various places at a local coffee shop. Phil and
Rick Harris his brother-in-law an older, fit, sharp, ex-military man are
sitting at a table with their coffee. Rick also came from an Air Force
military family, same as Janet. The difference is Rick’s father named
“Tom” was a retired master sergeant. They also traveled around the U.S.
and even to Japan at Johnson A.B. near Tokyo. Rick was very young at
the time, but remembers his father taking him to nearby mountains with
streams and rivers. They would spend the entire weekend going rainbow
trout fishing with his brothers.

Rick grew up in a large family, with two brothers and one sister. His
mother named “Dorothy” was a stay-at-home mom. Rick brothers were
named “John, “Paul” and his sister was “Julia”. It was an active and
lively family, with his parents always trying to keep them occupied. His
older brother “John” was into baseball and his younger brother “Paul”
was an avid reader. Rick's sister “Julia” liked being with her mother,
helping around the house. The mother died at an early age of forty and
that left the family devastated. His father began to drink and he had to
retire from the Air Force early, because of a DWI incident.

They moved to Oklahoma City to live, but family broke apart soon
afterwards. The oldest brother John left home, before graduating high
school. Paul and Julia went to live their aunt and uncle in San Jose,
California. Rick decided to stay in Oklahoma City, after a single parent
family heard about his situation and asked him if wanted live with them.
Rick’s teenage years was growing up in Oklahoma City and enjoying his
new home. He graduated from high school there, but was unsure what to
do next. He worked as welder at a steel fabricator shop for one summer
and then later he got a union job, at a local meat packing plant.

He worked at the meat packing plant for many years, until 9/11
happened. It all changed after that; he enlisted in the army soon after. He
considered joining the Air Force like his father, but he want to see action
on the ground. Rick got what he wished and more. He has two purple
hearts, bronze and silver stars to prove it. That is where he met his
current business partners "Mike Dawson" and "Jim Avery" in the Army
Special Forces. They all got out of the army at the same time and now
they have their own security company. Rick met his young wife named
“Christie” at a L.A. fitness center. They have been married for three
years now. He currently has no children.

Phil finishes taking a sip from his coffee and says

“I didn’t think it was FBI or CIA. I just thought it was a

small government research group who needed a programming
issue solved… You were in military, what do you think?”

Rick responds “They way you described the program, it could

be NSA, but they have their own internal programmers or they
contract out the work. I feel we are dealing with very exclusive
group, above these agencies.”

Phil says “You’re serious?”

constitutional laws in place that our government branches
or agencies are suppose to abide by. The solution to get
around these laws, you create ultra-secret groups unknown
by other federal law agencies.”

Phil looking perplexed, says “But why use a technical city

college for solving a software program issue, if they have
so many resources at there disposal?”

Rick pauses and then says

“I’m guessing; if they contracted out professional software

programmers, it would leave a paper trail. This is not good,
apparently whatever was created they’re willing to end lives
to protect it. We have to act fast.”

Janet enters the coffee shop looks around, Phil waves to her. She sees
him, but stops to order a coffee from the counter. Rick takes his cell
phone and calls someone. She eventually gets her coffee, walks over and
sits down at the table.

Phil begins talking “Janet, this is my brother-in law Rick

Harris. Rick, this is Janet Jones a student of mine.”

Rick gets off the cell phone and smiles. He says “Hello.”

Janet with worried voice says “Hello.. Mr. Thomas, what is

going on?”

Phil replies “I’m glad you came, Janet. You saw John on
Sunday, right?”

Phil says “Did John show you a code solution, to a problem

Phil replies “It’s the program that John created... Let me

explain. The programming problem was originally given
to me two months ago, by person named James Wright. Jim
said he was part of small research group, trying to find a
solution to a difficult financial network programming issue.
He said, if I could solve within their time frame, they would
buy me and my family a vacation to Mexico. I didn’t see any
harm in it. I tried to solve it myself, but with no success. I gave
it to John, to let him give it a try. He seems to have a gift of
finding programming solutions using unusual methods.”

Janet says “John solved it, right?”

Phil seems scared, says “Yes, and they’re going to kill the
person who created it and anyone who has seen the program
solution, including you.”

Rick with assertive voice, says “I know this is hard to accept

agencies out there, capable of about anything.”

Janet says “I don’t believe you and I’m leaving.”

She starts to get up from the table to leave.

Rick says “Janet wait! You need to hear this.”

She slowly sits back down in her chair and listens.

Rick with a normal calm voice, says “Phil has brought me here,
to protect all of you. It will be just for a few days, until we can
figure something out. I have small security company that
specializes in celebrity type protection. We all served together in
the past with the U.S. Special Forces overseas. I have already
contacted Mike to pickup John at St. Andrews. My initial plan is
to setup all of you at an unknown residence or small motel
outside of the city.”

Janet with a nervous voice says “Why don’t we just call the
police?”

Rick responds “The police cannot protect all of you 24/7.

These guys I’m guessing, will be relentless. The police
probably wouldn’t believe us anyway.”

Janet smiles and continues walking out of the coffee shop.

Phil says “Is this all necessary?”

He replies “Only if you want to see my sister and your

daughter again. Go home and pack, I’ll meet you there in
thirty minutes.”

Phil says “Thanks Rick, I don’t know how I will repay you.”

Rick replies “I can think of one way. If you and my sister

get back together, don’t invite me over for dinner when
she cooks.”

Phil says “Deal.”

A nurse is reading a celebrity magazine while sitting near a LCD

monitor. The critical care floor is quiet and somewhat dark. Mike
Dawson of V.I.P. security is dressed like a doctor with a name tag. He
has a medical type folder and is pushing a wheelchair into John’s room.
He has a small earphone that is barely seen. He then talks into his wrist
microphone.

Mike with low voice says “This is Station 1, ready for

pickup.”

A nurse passes by John’s hospital room and notices the doctor. He sees
her and says

“Nurse, can you help me? We are moving this patient to a

private hospital.”

The nurse replies “Yes doctor, after I see the paperwork.”

Mike shows her the folder and the nurse helps to put John into the
wheelchair. Mike wheels John towards the floor elevator.

A black SUV pulls into a side alley of Saint Andrews hospital and two
men in suits get out. They walk towards the stairwell exit of the hospital.

Mike is waiting for the elevator, when a real doctor confronts him.

He says “Doctor, where are going with this patient?”

Mike says “Rose Medical Center, didn’t the nurse give you
the papers?”

He replies “What nurse? What papers?”

The elevator door opens up. Mike points towards a nurse at the nursing
station. The real doctor looks that way and walks towards her. He
quickly rolls John into the elevator and pushes a button. The elevator
doors begin to close and real doctor turns around and says

“Where are you going? Stop!”

The elevator door closes. Two men in suits enter from stairwell and
notice the commotion.

The real doctor with a loud voice, says “Nurse Steele,

call security!”

The nurse picks up a phone and then two men in suits run back into the
stairwell. The elevator opens on the bottom level and Mike quickly rolls
John’s wheel chair towards the main exit. A green SUV is parked in
front. Security guards are running down the hall to the main exit. Mike
lifts John from the wheel chair and puts him into the SUV. He takes off
the white coat, gets in and drives off. Security guards run after the SUV,
for brief time, one talks into a hand microphone attached to his collar.
The two men in suits exit out of the stairwell and jump in their black
SUV. They chase after the green SUV, down the main street in front of
the hospital. Mike is driving with racing precision and John is hung-over
from the drugs, in the back seat.

Mike talks into his wrist microphone, while driving the SUV.

“This is Station 1, we are mobile.”

John says with slurred speech “What’s going on?”

He looks in the rearview mirror and says “They drugged you

and you have been in a hospital. I was to get you out of there
without any major issues. How I am doing so far? ...”

Mike is driving in and out of traffic nearly missing cars, through L.A.
city streets. He then puts on a headset. He enters the on-ramp for the 110
freeway, which is heading north.

John is starting to wakeup says “Where are we going?”

He replies “Back to home base, hang-on!”

An older apartment complex near Sherman Oaks Jim Avery of V.I.P.

security is looking at the parking lot, from Janet’s apartment window.
Janet is rushing around the apartment, packing her bags. Jim then talks
into his wrist microphone.

“Station 2 we’re almost mobile, waiting on the prize

package.”

Jim notices something; a black SUV drives into the parking lot. Two
men in suits get out and one checks his 9mm side arm. The men walk
towards the apartment’s main entrance. Jim says with an assertive voice

“J. Lo, let’s go. You got 30 seconds.”

She looks irritated, says “Ok! Ok! And call me Janet!”

Janet grabs a bag and Jim picks up the other bag, they exit out the
apartment door. He talks to his wrist.

“This is Station 2, we are going mobile.”

“Janet, this way.”

They both walk fast, down the apartment's back stairwell fire exit.

Two men in the elevator look impatient, waiting for the floor numbers to
light up. Jim and Janet exit out apartment stairwell, walk to the green
SUV. The two men get out of the elevator. One man looks out a side
window, which looks over the parking lot. He sees both of them get into
a green SUV and says

“They’re in the parking lot.”

The two men quickly get back in the elevator. Jim is driving with Janet
in the back seat.

He talks to his wrist. “This is Mobile 2, I have the package

and we are base bound.”

Janet with worried look says “Have you done this before?”

Jim replies back “Only in the military special ops, but this
looks interesting.”

He is driving fast, in and out of traffic through L.A. city streets. He puts
on a phone headset.

Janet with non-impressed look, says “Great.”

Heading north on the L.A. freeway, Mike is driving with John in the
back seat. Mike notices a black SUV behind, speeding towards them.

Mike is driving fast in and out of traffic through L.A. freeway traffic,
trying to lose the black SUV. The driver catches up to green SUV, looks
at them. The black SUV then speeds up and passes them.

Mike says ‘Hmm, must be the wrong guys.”

The passenger of the black SUV looks at L.A. city map and says

“Take this exit, here. There’s an overpass two miles ahead.

Speed up.”

Mike notices the black SUV is no longer visible. He slows down.

He talks into his headset “This is Mobile 1, we've lost the

black SUV...”

The black SUV pulls on to the freeway overpass and stops. The
passenger quickly gets out with a small rifle with scope and silencer. He
aims the rifle while standing up. The green SUV is getting closer to the
overpass. Mike notices the black SUV on the overpass. Then three
bullets hit the bulletproof windshield. They are perfect headshots, less
than 1 inch apart.

Mike with stress voice “This is Mobile 1, live shots fired...

repeat, live shots fired, advise…”

On the north side of L.A. in a two bedroom brick house, kitchen lights
are on. Phil and Rick are at the dining room table. Rick has a headset on
with hand switch, attached to a small receiver/transmitter. A laptop
nearby has a detailed street map of Los Angeles. Phil is standing beside
him, listening.

Rick says to Mike “Roger, shots fired… Do not respond,

repeat.. Do not respond.. Return to base.”

Phil with a stress voice “Are you crazy!”

Rick with calm voice replies “They’ve been in worse

situations. It’s not wise to shoot people, you don’t know
anything about. We could open a hornet's nest.”

Another shot is fired, but the bullet strike is lower. The green SUV then
passes under the overpass.

Mike with a raised voice “Yea, that’s right! You only crippled
me that time. Do not respond, right.”

He stops the SUV and gets out with his 9mm semi-automatic pistol.
Mike fires and unloads the pistol’s magazine at the shooter. Mike
intentionally misses the shooter. The passenger with rifle, dives into
SUV and closes the door. He checks himself for injury, the shooter
laughs and says

“What a lousy shot.”

There are bullet holes are over the black SUV and with two blown tires.

Jim and Janet are also heading north, also being followed by a black
SUV. The black SUV driver sees green SUV ahead and starts to speed
up. The passenger screws on the rifle silencer and then uses the outside
mirror to steady the rifle, as he aims. The passenger with a raised voice,
says

“Get closer!”

Jim looks in the rearview mirror and notices the black SUV. The three
bullets strike the SUV's rear bulletproof window. Janet screams, Jim
takes evasive action and speeds up.

Janet says “Get me out of here!”

from a black SUV. Advise..... Really?”

Jim slips in and out of traffic, through L.A. city streets. The black SUV
driver is getting closer, but he doesn’t see a car trying to enter the main
street. He tries to avoid the car, but loses control of the SUV. The black
SUV swerves right then left, the SUV smashes into a store front window.

Rick and Phil are carefully listening to the small receiver/transmitter.

Rick says “Mobile 1 & 2 report status, repeat, report status...”

Mike says “Home base.. Status Ok.”

Jim replies “Home base.. Were fine.”

Phil says “Where are they?”

He looks at the laptop, which has GPS tracking software. Rick looks at
his military type watch and says

“They’re both about seven minutes away.”

Chapter 6 Hornet’s Nest

A dark news room type environment, two men in dark suits are looking
at a LCD monitor with street map of Los Angeles city. One monitor
shows an empty desert and the others news feeds. The younger agent is
pointing at the monitor with the L.A. map. The senior agent says

“They lost them, right?”

The younger agent says “Yes, about 20 minutes ago and

both units are disabled. We have replacements already.”

The senior agent dials extension number on the phone.

Rick is drinking coffee with Phil at the kitchen table; they are looking at

where our safe house is. First, we have to switch vehicles and

The two green SUV’s pull up in front of the two bedroom house; Janet
and John each get out of their SUVs. They hug each other. They all enter
the house.

I think we need to talk.”

points at John on the back porch. Phil has his hand on John’s shoulder,

opens the garage door, where two new gray Hummers are parked. He
starts loading luggage and guns from SUVs to the Hummers.

Airline jets light up the L.A. night sky, as they approach LAX runways
from the east. In the late night hour, taxis and limousines are parked in
front. Passengers are waiting for their luggage at the baggage carousels.
Some porters are picking up bags, as their clients are talking on their cell
phones. Security guards are watching the area, but seem mentally
distracted with boredom.

Two black SUV’s are seen exiting off the 405 freeway heading
northwest. They are speeding up through the city streets. Two black
SUV’s pull up to the two bedroom brick house. Four men with automatic
weapons get out and search the house. They find two green SUVs
parked in the garage, but no one is here. One makes a call using a cell
phone; the others get back in the SUVs.

The two gray Hummers are on the 405 freeway heading south.

The LAX porters are loading luggage into limousines and taxis. The
passengers who want to save money, load their own luggage into the
taxis. Airport security is always trying to keep cars moving in the loading
zone. It is a 24 hour operation at LAX airport, which never lets up.

Two Hummers are pulling up to a large ranch style house in Riverside

area, near the foothills of Box Springs Mountain. The garage door
automatically opens and both Hummers drive in. Jim quickly exits the

house.

As sunrise begins in Los Angeles, some men in white aprons are

washing down sidewalks with water hoses in front of their businesses.
Cars are waiting at the drive thru of local coffee shops. Traffic is quickly
building up on all L.A. freeways, as a normal workday begins. Mike
exits out of the house with a small automatic weapon. He says

“I got it Jim, go get some breakfast and sleep.”

Jim replies “Thanks, it’s been quiet.”

Rick and Phil are on the back porch, sitting on worn patio chairs. They
are drinking coffee, as they watch the sunrise. Rick says to Phil

“How are you holding up?”

Phil replies “I’m fine, but I’m worried about my family.”

Rick puts down his coffee “It's ok, I’ve taken care of it.”

Phil looks confused “What do you mean?”

Rick replies “They are out of harms way.”

Phil says “Where are they? ...”

John looks weary, walks out to the back porch and coughs a little.

Phil looks up and says “How did you sleep?”

John replies “Not to bad, I feel little hung-over though.”

website and its 128-bit encrypted.”

Rick says “John let’s download it later. Maybe there’s

something in the program that might help us on who were
dealing with.”

He says “Sure, no problem.”

Chapter 7 Food Run

The afternoon lunch crowd in L.A. has begun, from fast food to
expensive restaurants around the city. Some are eating outdoors under
large umbrellas, keeping them comfortable in the shade. The large
menus are like mini-partitions between themselves, as they decide their
lunch fare. Rick and Phil are at the formal dinning table finishing their
meal. They are also looking at John’s program on a laptop. Janet and
John are on the couch, talking. Jim walks into the living room from the
hall, awake after his short sleep. He says

“I’m doing a food run, does anyone want to come?”

Janet says “No, not me. I’m going to take a nap.”

John replies “Yes, I’ll go.”

Jim looks at Rick for approval.

Rick says “Yes, but stay on-line.”

They both leave out the front door with Mike still at guard. They open
the garage door and get in one of the Hummers. He then drives down the
long driveway. Jim is driving with a headset on and John sitting in the
front passenger seat. Jim says

“Rick tells me you are college student?”

John replies “Yes I am.”

Jim says “What is your major?”

He says “Computer Science.”

He leaves the cart, Jim looks at the grocery list and picks up more items.
John walks down to the soda aisle, near the beer section.

He says to himself “Cans, not plastic bottles.”

John grabs two six-packs of Diet Coke from the shelf. Three large men,
which are red-neck looking types are by the beer section. They notice
John with his glasses and start to mock him.

“No problem. Where just old high school buddies,

shooting the breeze.”

The three men grab six-pack bottles of beer and leave. The security
guard looks around and then walks away. The first man with a low voice
looks back at Jim and says

Jim and John walk to the grocery cash registers area. A woman clerk
starts scanning their food items; a young man is packing and putting the
bags in a shopping cart.

John says “So, what did he say?”

parking lot. John is pushing the shopping cart. The three men standing
by a large pickup, notices them. The men walk towards them, carrying

in the Hummer.”

John pushes the cart towards the Hummer. The three men surround Jim
with metal bats and get ready to fight. John, then stops the shopping cart
and watches. The first man with a loud voice

“Come on!”

Jim twirls around in a Matrix type move, reaches in his overcoat and
brings out a small automatic weapon. Jim fires the automatic weapon in
the air. The three men drop their bats and run. They dive into the pickup,
they speed away with six-packs of beer bottles moving and smashing in
the bed of the pickup. The beer bottles smash out on the road, with white
foam shooting in the air.

It is another work day is finished for most people in L.A., except for the
night and grave shift workers. For some, they begin their long commute
home, since local housing is so expensive. They have to live further out
in the suburbs and other nearby cities to afford decent family housing.

John is at the stove cooking and talking to Mike. There is a pot of pasta
cooking on the stove. Freshly cut vegetables are on the counter. Rick and
Phil are at the formal dinning table, still looking at John’s program. Janet
is on the couch, resting. John takes the cut mushrooms and puts them in
the pan. He stirs them using the pan handle, while Mike is watching.

It’s nearly a two or three hour commute for some to reach their homes.
The new L.A. metro subway is helping, but it doesn’t reach all of the
L.A. suburbs. It must be nice for those who can walk to the metro
subway from their homes and get on board. Many of the older L.A.
residents have moved to smaller cities in California, Nevada and
Arizona; believing the glory days are over in Los Angeles.

Rick, Phil, Janet and Mike are at the kitchen table talking to each other
with a large plate of pasta with fresh bread, salads and drinks. John
brings a bowl of gourmet looking sauce to the table.

John says “Here you go.”

Janet looking impressed “It looks great, John.”

Rick says “Let’s eat.”

Through the back porch glass door you can see Rick, Phil, Janet, John
and Mike sitting at the table eating and laughing. Jim is now standing
guard, in front of the large rental house.

their favorite vendors and restaurants. It started in 1934 when local
farmers brought their fresh produce to an empty lot, at the corner of

He replies “Not anymore, she moved back home to New York

after graduating college.”

Chapter 8 The Discovery

John opens the screen door and sits down at the table. Mike comes into
the living room from the hallway and says

“Rick, I‘m going to gas up the Hummers.”

Mike leaves out the front door, with Jim standing guard in front. John

Phil says “We’ve been trying to make sense of the program.

John maybe you can help us.”

He replies “Sure, let’s take a look.”

Rick says “After looking at the source code, we know it's a

financial type application. We also see it runs on a secure
network, but has a short lifespan. It deletes itself, after a short
time delay. We both are wondering; why a financial program?”

John replies “I wondered that also, when I was coding it.”

Phil speaks up “What did you come up with?”

John says “See these three columns they each are scanning
networks for a secure password. In the program requirements
from the client it must exactly match a certain criteria.”

He points to a section of code, in the financial network program.

secure password; it sends out some financial stock data on
unknown network and then destroys itself after exactly
21 minutes.”

John gets out notebook paper from his shoulder bag and starts to draw a
timeline. He then says

“This is what we have: First, after the program is uploaded

it begins to scan for a 128 bit secure password. Second,
after it finds the seventeen character password; it sends out
financial stock data over an unknown secure network. Third,
after 21 minutes it destroys itself.”

In the background with the television on, a CNN reporter says “Wall
Street extended a huge rally today as investors stormed back into the
market, relieved that the government plans to restore calm to the
financial system by rescuing banks from billions of dollars in bad debt.
The Dow Jones industrials rose about 370 points.” Rick and Phil hear
the report and look up at each other.

Rick, Phil both says “Wall Street!”

John looks confused “What?”

Rick pauses and then says “Back in the Reagan years, he

a gave a speech to the American public to get a bill passed.
He said, the Soviet Union had a nuclear weapon advantage.
Shortly afterwards, congress authorized billions of defense
dollars to a program called “SDI”. Its basic purpose was
to shoot down inter-continental ballistic missiles using lasers
from satellites. They could never make it work, but it brought
in over a hundred billion dollars into the defense budget. A

defense company I worked for back then, benefited greatly

from that bill passage.”

John responds “What does have to do with Wall Street?”

Rick replies “The key is fear. That’s how you get billions of
dollars from congress or the American people.”

John says “I still don’t get it.”

Rick gets the notebook paper from John and starts to draw a Dow Jones
type line. He says

“Let’s say, right now the market is the looking fine with the
recent bailouts. We see Dow Jones is moving up, but what
if I were to cause a panic in the market place. It wouldn’t take
much, with all that is going on. I would first spread a few false
rumors and with this program I can actually push some large
blue chip companies into the red.”

They look at John’s modified drawing with Dow Jones line falling deep
in the negative.

Rick continues “What do you think?”

John replies “They would eventually find it and also who

would benefit?”

Phil says “No they wouldn’t, remember it destroys itself after

21 minutes... I’m not sure who would benefit from tanking the
Dow Jones system?”

Chapter 9 Hornets Arrive

The sunrise brings rays of sunlight on the large boulders on Box Springs
Mountain. A wild rabbit is on the front lawn of the rental house, eating
the fresh green grass. Mike with a headset, is at the front of house. He
pulls out and checks the magazine of his automatic rifle. Three bullets
silently strike Mike in the chest, he falls to the ground. He lays
motionless for a brief period and then starts to get up. Mike says

“Shots fired! Shots fired!”

Mike opens up his shirt. He is wearing a Kevlar vest. Two black SUV’s
are coming up the front road to the house. Mike opens fire on the
bulletproof SUVs. He shoots the front tire of one SUV. The black SUV
swerves, and then rolls over. The passenger gets out and runs towards
Mike with his side arm drawn. He fires at Mike, while running straight at
him. Mike ducks behind a small brick wall, to avoid being shot. The
shooter unloads his full pistol clip and Mike knows it. Mike stands up
and with the butt of his automatic rifle, he knocks him out cold. Mike
notices a military type GPS on his vest. He grabs it, along with his
semi-automatic pistol.

The driver in the crashed SUV motions the other driver to go on. Mike
runs into the house, holding his chest. The other black SUV drives up to
the front of the house and two men with automatic weapons quickly get
out. They break into the house, with one swift kick by one of them.

Then two Hummers smash out the double-car garage back wall, at rear
of the house. They drive through the large backyard and crash through
the backyard fence. The Hummers drive through the neighbor’s yard,
running over a small tree and then destroying a brick barbeque. The
black SUV drives through the same hole in the wall, created by the
Hummers. The shooters are firing their automatic rifles out of the side
windows. The two Hummers get on a residential street and try to elude

the black SUV. Rick with a headset is driving, with Janet and Mike who
both are in the back seat. John is in passenger seat. Rick with a calm
voice says

“This is Mobile 1, do you copy, over?”

Jim with headset is driving with Phil in passenger seat. He responds

“Mobile 2, I read you!”

The two Hummers are speeding through small streets. The black SUV
shooters are firing out the windows and getting closer. The bullets are
hitting the sides of the two bulletproof Hummers.

Rick with a raised voice “Mobile 2 follow me.”

Jim is driving almost on the tail of Rick’s Hummer.

He responds “I’m there!”

Rick looks in his rear view mirror “Janet, checkout Mike

for injury.”

Janet says “Ok!”

The two Hummers drive south, while the black SUV is close by.

Phil says “Where is he going?”

Jim replies “I think I know, an abandon Air Force base

housing. He grew up there, as a military brat. Hold on!”

The two Hummers arrive at Arnold Heights, former Clark A.F.B. base
housing; some of the base houses are still standing, while others are half

demolished. They start to smash into broken walls, small trees and
abandon homes, trying to elude the black SUV. Janet screams

“Oh my God!”

John says “Look out for the... never mind.”

Mike with low voice says “Ouch.”

Rick responds “No, I know a shortcut.”

John says “Where!”

Rick says “Here!”

The two Hummers get off the residential street and track off over large
and very rough prairie field. The black SUV is right behind. Jack rabbits
can be seen running for their lives, across the field. They head west and
drive through a small canyon with large rocks called "Rabbit Canyon".
The Hummers drive through it with no problem. The black SUV starts to
fall apart. There are large parts coming from underneath, finally a wheel
almost falls off. The black SUV smashes into the ground. The two
Hummers vanish over a hill and head north.

Chapter 10 The Cabin

The two Hummers enter the on ramp of the 10 freeway which is heading
west. Rick with headset is driving; he looks at the rear view mirror and
says

“How are doing back there, Mike?”

He responds “I’ll be fine.”

Mike looks at his chest; there are three bullet-like reddish marks.

Rick says “Mobile 2, do you copy? Safe house two, repeat

safe house two, over.”

Jim with headset is driving with Phil in passenger seat. Jim says

“Mobile 1, roger… safe house two.”

Janet says “Where are we going?”

Rick responds “It’s a cabin near Santa Rosa, on the

Russian River.”

The two Hummers are heading north, up California’s Freeway 5.

A dark news room type environment with various live feeds of CNN,
MSN and BBC, two men in dark suits are looking at a monitor with a
map of the California.

Senior agent says “They lost them again?”

The younger agent with headset on replies “Yes, Unit 1 and

Unit 2 are disabled. We’ll have unit replacements in a hour.”

The two Hummers are heading north up the freeway. They are in tandem
slipping in and out of traffic. Janet and Mike are eating in the back seat.

John says to Rick “How are they finding us?”

Rick replies “They’re using satellite images and traffic

videos. We have to keep moving and out of sight.”

Jim says “Mobile 1 this is Mobile 2, Do you copy?”

Rick responds “5 by 5, Mobile 2.”

Jim replies “Mobile 1, what route are we taking, over.”

Rick says “Roger Mobile 2, east route… copy? Roger.”

John speaks up “Where are we going?”

Rick replies “Fresno it’s about mid-way up, we’re going to

spend the night there. We will need the rest, besides I have
an idea.”

The two Hummers take a right exit at junction, north-east to Fresno, CA.
The scenery changes to desert shrubs, rocks and tumble weeds that roll
across the freeway at random. There isn’t much to look at, except for the

billboards which are on the sides of the freeway. It is late evening and
the two Hummers eventually reach Fresno’s main street.

John says “What are we looking for? Didn’t we already pass

by some motels?”

Rick talks in his headset “Mobile 2, do you copy?... We’re

turning here.”

The two Hummers pull into the sales lot of a closed “Hummer” SUV
dealership. They all get out with their bags and walk to a nearby motel.

The sunrise brings life to the small city of Fresno. It is mostly an

agricultural type town, with hard working men and women. John is up
and standing in front of a motel room door. Rick, Phil, Jim and Mike are
talking nearby, in the parking lot.

John speaks with a raised voice “Janet, are you ready?”

She from inside the room says “Five minutes more, I’m
drying off.”

Rick says “Is J. Lo ready to go?”

John smiles and says “Five minutes more.”

Rick says to Mike “Phil, Jim and I will head out now. You all
meet us at the Denny’s down the road, when you have Janet.”

He says “See you there.”

Rick, Phil and Jim cross the street with their bags and get into the
Hummer; Jim is driving.

MSN and BBC. Two men in dark suits are looking at a monitor with a
street map of the Fresno, Ca. area.

Younger agent with headset says “They have located the

Hummers.”

The two kids say loudly “Yea!”

Then four men in suits with automatic weapons bust-in from two sides of
the dinning room. They scan the room, but do not fire.

The scenery is changing farther north, as the two Hummers near Santa
Rosa area. There are trees everywhere, large green bushes and a pristine
river that can be seen from the highway. Janet is resting with her head on
John’s shoulder in the back seat.

Mike with headset says “Mobile 1 this is Mobile 2, How

about a lunch break?... Roger.”

In front of a Jack-In-A-Box near town, the two Hummers are parked

with everyone eating burgers and fries. The Hummer doors are open
with some sitting and others standing outside. Mike is standing guard,
scanning the area.

Phil says to Rick “How much further?”

Everyone looks at Jim. He has mustard and ketchup on the side of his
mouth, while holding his burger.

Jim speaks with a garbled voice “What?”

They all laugh.

It's beautiful area, with lush trees everywhere and you can see the
Russian River on one side of the road. There are some people in kayak’s
and sunbathers on the shore, enjoying the crystal rushing water. Then a
small gravel road is seen to the right, the two Hummers exit off the main
highway. The two Hummers pull up to a large wood cabin, by the river.

Santa Rosa is a small, but beautiful city. It was know for its plums, but
most farmers have switched to grapes. It's more profitable these days
making wine than prunes. The famed director Alfred Hitchcock, filmed
his 1943 movie "Shadow of a Doubt" in the Santa Rosa area.

The Russian River can be heard in the background with the cabin back
door open. Everyone is sitting around the table finishing dinner, except
for Mike who is standing guard outside.

Janet says “So how long are we staying here?”

Rick replies “At least 3 days.”

Phil speaks up “Do you have an idea of who we are

He responds “I was out of the military and married, I was

trying to make ends meet, working two jobs. Here I had
all these skills from years of training with the military.
What I am going to put on my resume’? I can knock out
someone with one punch; shoot a target, size of a golf ball
at 100 yards or I can parachute in total darkness and stick
a 10 foot square landing? I was channel surfing one day
and saw an 'Access Hollywood' report on movie stars and
their elite security teams. That’s when the light came on.”

John says “So, how long were all you together in Special
Forces, overseas?”

Rick replies “About 3 years. We saw it all; we all got out

of the military about the same time.”

Jim speaks up “I got to tell you the Rick and Mike dog
story.”

Phil says “I haven’t heard this one.”

Rick says “Oh, you better not!”

Janet with excited voice “Tell us, Jim!”

John says “Yea. Let’s hear it.”

Jim replies “Ok. Rick and Mike are on a special ops mission
to get recon of a small Afghanistan rebel force. They
parachute in at night and walk towards the village. They walk
for miles, over mountainous terrain. They get to the out skirts
of the village, when a small dog tied to a post starts barking.
They didn’t want to shoot it. So Mike has an idea. They grab
the dog and gag him with a scarf. They tie a belt around his
mouth. The dog is trying to bark, but all he can get out is: Marf!
Marf! Marf! (Jim starts laughing) They’re trying to keep him
quiet, when the dog pisses all over them. They smelled for days
after that.”

Everyone is dying laughing, except for Rick.

It’s a sunny afternoon at the cabin with older furniture, fake plants and
pictures that fill the rooms. John is looking at the program on computer
monitor on the coffee table. Janet is looking over his shoulder on the
couch. Rick and Phil are finishing their lunch at the dining room table.

Janet says “What are looking at?”

John says “I’m trying to figure out what network they’re

going to use, when they insert this program. It should be
a very secure network with the latest hacker safe guards.”

Janet says “Oh, ok.”

Phil speaks up “Any ideas so far?”

Mike gets up and takes the military type GPS from a black bag; the unit
he got from the shooter. He walks over to Janet and shows her the unit in

we are the spot by the Russian River.

She replies “Wow, this is interesting.”

Mike says “It’s a portable military type GPS unit, accurate

within 10 feet.”

He gives the GPS unit to Janet and walks back to the table.

Janet says “Oops, I’ve lost the map.”

Rick speaks up “What is it showing?”

She says “It looks like longitude and latitude data.”

Rick says “Yea, it has several modes. It’s a similar type we

used overseas, in the military.”

Janet says “I don’t recognize these numbers. Here John take

a look.”

John looks at the display of the portable GPS unit.

She says “Really.”

Mike speaks up “Janet if you press the yellow button on the

Janet presses the yellow button and looks.

She says “That’s strange, it doesn’t show Santa Rosa

John looks at the GPS display “Rick, come here. We got

He comes over and looks at the portable GPS unit.

Phil comes from the kitchen table, to look at the GPS unit.

He says “What is it?”

John replies “Look at the map, it looks like Arizona.”

Rick says “Let me try something.”

He takes the unit and presses the yellow button again.

Rick replies “Janet must have accidentally pulled up the

starting point or the home base location. Whoever was using
this unit set this location as their starting point. It could be
nothing though, just random data in the GPS unit.”

Chapter 11 Plan B

John is fly fishing by the river. He found an old fishing rod with hand
tied flies, in a storage closet. A metal flat-bottom boat is nearby on dry
land, tied securely to a large rock. Janet and Jim are sitting on a large
tree trunk, near the bank. Jim is showing Janet the basics of his 9mm
pistol, with a small automatic weapon slung around him. He says

“Most important is the safety, only turn it off when you’re

ready to fire.”

Mike with automatic weapon is on the cabin porch, standing guard. Mike
is looking through small binoculars scanning up the river bank.

Janet says “Where did Rick and Phil go?”

He says “They went to Santa Rosa, to get some supplies

and maps.”

She with a compassionate voice says “I’m sorry Jim. We got

you all into this.”

Jim replies “No problem, it’s been good training. We haven’t

done this in awhile.”

He smiles at Janet.

She says “Do you miss your family?”

He responds “Yes, I do.”

Janet says “What is your wife and kid’s name?”

Jim with a proud voice “Her name is Nancy and she is great.
I have one son and two daughters: Eric, Sophie and Marie.”

He pulls his 9mm pistol from his side holster and tosses it in the air. Jim
grabs his automatic weapon, that was slung around his shoulder. Janet
catches the pistol and pushes them both into the boat. Jim is behind the
large tree trunk with his weapon aiming across the river.

Jim says with raised voice “Mike, where is he?”

hand raises his binoculars.

He says “2:00 o’clock.”

Janet looks over the top of the boat, aiming the pistol. John is lying
besides her, shaking his head. A deer comes out of the heavy woods and
takes a drink from the river. Mike and Jim look at each other and smile.

The Russian River is glistening from the moon light and the cabin lights
that are on. Frogs and crickets have started to fill night air with their
familiar sounds. Rick and Phil are at the dining table with a large map
and the portable GPS unit. Janet and John are in the kitchen, doing
dishes. Mike is resting on the couch.

Rick says to Phil “What is GPS readout again?”

Phil says “12S…491725E...3593545N”

He says to himself “That would be 491725 east, 3593545

north.”

Rick scans the Arizona map, with pencil in his mouth and says

“That will put it right here. Hey guys look at this.”

He marks the map with the pencil. The Arizona map shows the area
marked, named: Gila Bend Indian Reservation.

Mike, Janet and John are now at the table. They look at the pencil circled
area on the map.

John says “Finding anything?”

Rick replies “It looks like a small remote Arizona Indian

reservation, near Phoenix.”

Janet says “We have nothing then?”

Rick pauses and says “Not necessarily, I’ve heard rumors over
the years that the government sometimes uses Indian reservation
land to construct underground facilities. It’s perfect; because it's
isolated, government owned and usually off limits to the general
public. I've never seen it myself, but former high-ranking officers
I know swear they exist.”

Phil responds “What branch of the government?”

He replies “I’m not sure, but I think we should take a look. We

can’t be on the run forever. We have to take action for ourselves.”

John says “So next, we are all heading to Arizona?”

Rick looks up and says “Not all of us. Jim, Phil and I, will check
out the reservation. The rest of you will head south to San Diego.
I have three plane tickets waiting for you at the airport. It’s our
Plan B; Phil already has our plane tickets covered. We will meet
you there in 3 days.”

Janet says “Where are tickets, going?”

Rick replies “Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. If we don’t make it to San

Diego, fly out anyway. Once your there head to South America
and stay low for awhile, before coming back to the U.S.

Rick says to Mike “Mike take the California west coast route. We
will head east and then we’ll go south through Nevada. We need
to keep mixing it up, to avoid their detection.”

Mike looks at Rick “I understand.”

Rick says to all “Let’s pack the Hummers; we’re leaving

at dawn.”

In the woods nearby birds can be heard, as the sun rises. The Russian
River level has risen, because the boat in the back tied to a rock, is now
floating on the river. Small trout can seen swimming in the river pools.

The two Hummers drive away from the cabin on the gravel road. They
each take their turn to get on the main road. They drive back towards
Santa Rosa one Hummer exits off the freeway going east, the other
heads west.

It would be a great ending to a short vacation, but reality soon sets in.
They are running for their lives. Janet and John want to begin a new life
together, but they also know what’s at stake. She looks out the window
and sees a familiar sight. She says to John

“Hey look.”

The Hummer then crosses over the Golden Gate Bridge. They head
south through the winding streets of San Francisco. The Hummer is
going over a steep hill, with a motorcycle policeman riding next to him.
They start to going down the hill and then a black SUV pulls in behind
him. Janet and John are in the back, looking out the side windows.

Mike says “Look behind us.”

Janet and John turn around and look with sun is reflecting on the black
SUV’s front windshield.

She says “Speed up!”

The Hummer and black SUV continues driving down the steep hill. The
motorcycle cop then turns on a city side street. The black SUV is getting
closer from behind.

driving up another steep hill. Mike looks in his rear-view mirror and
adjusts it. The black SUV slowly pulls over to the street curb and stops
suddenly.

A woman gets out. She opens the rear passenger door and then two kids
get out. They walk off holding hands, down the sidewalk.

Two men in dark suits are looking at a monitor with a map of the
northern California area. On the MSN monitor a news reporter says “The
Federal Reserve Board on Friday announced two enhancements to its
programs to provide liquidity to markets. One initiative will extend
non-recourse loans at the primary credit rate to U.S. depository
institutions and bank holding companies to finance their purchases….”

Senior agent says “Where was the last sighting?”

Younger agent responds “Fresno.”

He continues “Let’s put more men on this.”

Younger agent replies “I’m on it.”

A gray Hummer is seen driving down a desert highway; billboard signs

are scattered along the road, advertising casinos and shows in the Las
Vegas area. Phil is driving with Jim and Rick resting in the back. Phil
notices some wild Mustang horses running nearby, which populate some
of the desert landscape.

Janet is driving the other Hummer down the Coastal Highway 1. It has
great scenery with the ocean on the right, but it is getting dark. John is in
the front passenger seat. Mike is in the back, resting. Janet then pulls off
into a small motel parking lot, near an ocean cliff. They all get out and
start unloading their bags.

Phil is driving down the Las Vegas’s main strip. The Bellagio fountain is
spraying jets of water high in the air, keeping time with the music. The
familiar Lexor pyramid is seen with its beam of lights shooting straight
up into the night sky. Many people are walking on the sidewalks,
enjoying the dry night air with temperatures in the 70’s. They pull into a
smaller casino hotel parking lot.

Waves can be heard crashing on rocks below, with smell of the ocean in
the night air. They have all eaten dinner at the motel’s small diner and
they all are getting ready for bed. John with his shirt off is in the room
changing. Janet comes out of the bathroom, in her skimpy sleep clothes.
John stops what he doing and takes a brief look.

Janet says “Oh, I’m sorry.”

He replies “That’s ok.”

She with a seductive look “It’s a shame they only had two
rooms left.”

John says “What a shame and Mike snores loudly.”

Rick, Jim and Phil are at a large all-you-can eat buffet. Jim is already at
the table eating. Rick and Phil come over to the table and sit down.

He responds “It’s great, but not as good as my wife’s

cooking.”

Phil speaks up “It's been awhile since I've been here, the food is
much better. Have any of you ever been to Vegas before?”

Rick says “This is my first time.”

Jim says “My wife and I used to come out here at least
once a year.”

Phil and Rick look up from eating.

He continues “The last time we were here, was about 2 years

ago. We stayed at the MGM Grand and were having a great
time. I always do craps and little black jack, when I’m here. I
got carried away one night and lost all our spending money.
We had to come home early.”

Rick says “Ouch.”

Jim says “You said it. My wife didn’t talk to me for a week
and we haven’t been back since. I guess my luck just ran out.”

Phil says “It’s not luck, it’s just math.”

them. He says

He replies “Yea, it‘s my favorite.”

Phil says “You keep winning, until what?”

Rick responds “Until you crap out, usually by rolling

a 7 on the dice.”

He continues “Why don’t they use 3 roll, instead of a 7.

Look at these dice, how many possible combinations are
there to get a 3 roll?”

Phil arranges to show 1 and 2 on the dice and holds

them up.

On the Coastal Highway 1 is all quiet, but it’s not a road that you want to
be driving on at night. It has twists and turns with 100 feet drop offs to
the rocks and ocean below. You may find some tents, cars and recreation
vehicles parked in designated beach camping areas.

Rick, Phil and Jim are at the craps table. Jim is rolling the dice and he
gets a win. Everyone at the table cheers! He rolls another and wins

At the small motel on the ocean cliff, a single dim light can be seen in
one of the rooms. The sound of several seagulls can be heard nearby.
The light then turns off, in the small motel room.

Jim with Phil and Rick nearby is at a casino cash window with a stack of
chips. The cashier takes chips and starts counting out twenty dollar bills
one at a time. Jim has a smile on his face. It is nearly dawn at the casino,
after an all night winning streak at the tables.

John and Janet are hugging outside in the brisk ocean air. They are at the
cliffs edge, looking at the sunrise. Seagulls can be heard nearby. Mike is
loading the Hummer with their bags.

Janet quietly says “John.”

He replies “Yes Janet?”

She looks into his eyes and says “I love you.”

John holding her, replies “I love you too.”

Chapter 12 Hornets Return

Mike at the wheel and is driving south on the coastal highway. He comes
around a large bend. A small black helicopter is parked in the middle of
the highway, the Hummer stops and then another black helicopter lands
behind it. Two men quickly get out with small automatic rifles, one from
each helicopter. They surround the Hummer and then one man shows a
grenade in his hand.

Rick is driving through Peoria, a small city just north of Phoenix. He

pulls into local small diner parking lot. They all get out and stretch, after
the long trip from Las Vegas. Jim stands guard by the Hummer, while
Rick and Phil enter in the front diner's door.

Mike, Janet and John are in the back seat of the helicopter with
handcuffs on. There are two men in the front, a pilot with a headset on.
The passenger is holding a small automatic weapon, watching them.

Mike says “Sorry about this.”

Janet replies “It’s not your fault”.

The two helicopters are flying down the coastal highway, heading south.

Mike with a low voice “John, can you fly a helicopter?”

He with a curious look says “Only on my computer, you

know flight simulator programs.”

Mike says “I might need some help.”

John responds “What?”

He says to John “Just be ready.”

Mike says to Janet “I need a diversion.”

She replies “What kind?”

Mike looks at her bra and then her.

She says “Got it.”

Janet slowly adjusts her black lace bra and the man looks. Mike knocks
him on the side of the head with hands handcuffed. He then struggles
with pilot. The helicopter starts to fly out of control. Mike hits the man
again with the gun and he is knocked out.

Mike then hits the pilot and with a raised voice “John!”

John reaches forward, grabs the stick and tries to fly. The helicopter flies
out of control, nearly missing cars on the pacific coast highway. It then
misses the side of the cliff. It swoops down towards the ocean. The rungs
of the helicopter are underwater in the ocean, but it keeps flying. Mike
finally knocks out the pilot.

He says “Janet, find the keys.”

Janet searches the pockets of knocked out man with the gun. She unlocks
the handcuffs of Mike, while John is flying. Then bullets strike the side
making popping noise, a man is firing from the other helicopter. John
gets hit. Mike gets the gun from the knocked out man. He opens the
helicopter side door, aims and fires back at the helicopter. Mike hits the
engine section of the other helicopter. The helicopter smokes and starts
to fly out of control. The pilot makes a slow controlled crash landing,
they all jump out on the beach. The helicopter explodes in fire. Mike
takes over the stick control of the helicopter and he descends towards the
highway.

Janet says “You’re bleeding!”

John looks and replies “Your right... I think, it's just a

flesh wound.”

Mike says “Janet, there is first aid kit beside you.”

In a small restaurant Rick and Phil are sitting at a table, eating. Jim is
outside, on guard . He is watching vehicles drive by and also those who
drive in into the diner's parking lot.

Phil says “So where are we?”

Rick replies “In Peoria a few miles north of Phoenix, we’ve

made good time.”

The crashed helicopter is on the beach engulfed in flames, with thick

black smoke rising up. Two men are handcuffed together, attached to the
highway side guard rail. The other two men covered in sand and dirt, are
slowly walking towards them. They are hiking up a steep embankment
from the beach. A helicopter is seen far away going south, along the
pacific coast highway. Mike is flying the helicopter, with John and Janet
in the back seat.

Chapter 13 Little John

In the small diner in Peoria, Rick and Phil are finishing their meal; Rick
waves to waitress for the check. Jim is outside standing guard, looking at
traffic as it drives by.

Phil says “What’s the plan?”

Rick replies “We are only two hours from the reservation.
You guys check into a motel and get some sleep. I’m going
to see buddy of mine that lives west of Phoenix.”

He says “Ok.”

Rick then replies “Have you ever skydived?”

Phil with confused look says “Just once, why?”

He responds “Good, I’ll tell you later.”

The waitress comes over with their check and a brown bag. They walk
out to the Hummer and hands Jim his to-go lunch.

The helicopter is flying towards bright lights, which can be seen in the
distance above the L.A. foothills. John has a small bandage on his arm,
with Janet sleeping next to him. They fly above the bright city lights of
Los Angeles.

Mike says “We are home, to bad we can’t stay.”

They both look up. He continues flying south, towards San Diego.

Jim, Rick and Phil with headsets on, are suited up to skydive. They are
almost over the Gila Bend Indian Reservation.

Phil says into his headset “Why didn’t we just drive?”

have and I’m sure they’re watching the reservation roads.”

The plane pilot with headset on turns around and says

“Three minutes.”

Rick continues “Jim you jump last and watch out for our
friend, Phil.”

Jim with thumbs up, says “Roger.”

Phil with a nervous voice “You know it’s completely dark

out there.”

Rick replies “That’s why we have these.”

He puts night vision goggles on Phil’s head and adjusts it. Rick says to
Phil

“Remember to steer just pull the cords up or down. For the

landing, pull both of them.”

Phil says “Right.”

The pilot turns around again and says

“Thirty seconds.”

Rick jumps out the plane then Phil, then Jim.

He is going in a fast cork screw descent towards the desert floor.

Rick spots him and says “You’re doing great… pull down
a little on the right... good.”

Jim sees at a long distance, SUV driving down a dirt road. He says

“Rick on your six.”

He quickly steers his parachute around and replies

“I see him.”

Rick and Jim make perfect landings. Phil is struggling and lands into a
small cactus.

He says “Ouch! Damn!”

Rick, Jim, Phil all meet together, carrying their parachutes.

Jim pulls out the GPS he got from the shooter. Rick looks at it and
compares to an area map.

Rick looks at Phil “You stay here, hold down the fort and watch
for our ride.”

Phil says “I thought you said they would be watching the roads.”

He replies “My friend, Little John is bringing horses in from the

east.”

Phil says “How will he find me?”

He responds “He’s full-blood Navajo, they can sense a white

man far away and he’s also using high-power infrared goggles.”

Rick and Jim with their weapons, they head off into the dark desert.

The helicopter is flying along the San Diego freeway. Janet and John are
in the back seat. Mike flies east towards San Diego’s downtown business
district. The helicopter lands on the top of a multi-story parking garage.
They all exit out of helicopter and walk toward the back exit stairwell. A
family car slowly pulls up to the parked helicopter, then parents and kids
get out investigating.

Rick and Jim are lying prone, looking across the dark desert. With night
vision goggles, they are looking at a SUV stopped in the middle of the
road. Then it slowly descends into the desert ground.

Jim says “Now, that’s interesting.”

Rick replies “Let’s get closer.”

San Diego has near perfect weather year round with its sunshine, cool
ocean breezes and temperatures in the 70’s. A city near the ocean with
modern skyscraper buildings that over look a beautiful harbor. Mike,
John and Janet have checked into a nice San Diego hotel near the harbor.
They are eating room service meals and talking. Mike is also eating
dinner, while looking out the window as he stands guard. John says to
Mike

“Do you have a family?”

Mike replies “You bet my wife’s name is Diana, a redhead.

She keeps me in-line. The two boys 7 and 9 years old are Zech
and Matthew.”

Janet says “I hope you will see them soon.”

Mike replies “Me too.”

crouching. They run for cover behind a large boulder and then lay in the
prone position. Rick with night vision goggles says

Rick and Jim are looking at an empty area of desert, except for scrub
plants, rocks and cactus.

Jim says “See the road. It just ends, to nowhere.”

Both with night vision goggles on, see the road that stops in the middle
of the desert. Then a section the dirt road drops down into the ground,
like a ramp. A concrete wall with heavy metal garage doors is seen. The
metal garage door opens up and a black SUV drives up the ramp. It
drives away across the desert.

Jim says “Wow, that’s strange.”

Rick says “Let’s go. We’ve seen enough.”

Jim replies “I think you’re right.”

Rick and Jim crouching, they hurry across the desert with their weapons.

Phil with an automatic weapon on his shoulder is moving around, trying

to keep warm. He hears desert sounds of owls, rodents and coyotes. Phil
looks out into the desert night. A dark figure of a man is nearby. The
man comes up behind Phil, grabs him and puts his hand on his mouth.

Phil with a muffled voice says “Hey!”

Little John says “Its ok. I’m Little John, Rick’s friend.”

Little John is full-blooded Navajo Indian; He is tall, has dark hair, brown
eyes with large shoulders. His relatives in fact live on the reservation, so
he is very familiar with the area. Phil looks shaken and Little John pats
him on the shoulder. He says

“I’m sorry, I scared you.”

be the mighty warrior, Phil.”

He smiles at Phil and then begins to scan the area.

Phil says “Yea right, where are the horses?”

Little John replies “About fifty yards away, in a canyon.”

Rick and Jim soon show up, from the desert night.

Rick says “Hey Little John, it’s good to see you again.”

They follow Little John across the night desert. The walk down into the
small canyon, with horses tied to small trees. Rick and Jim get on their
horses like professional cowboys. Phil struggles to get on his, so Little
John helps him get up. Little John un-ties his horse and quickly jumps on
it. They begin riding out of the canyon up a narrow path, heading east
across the desert.

In the underground facility on the reservation, two men are looking at a

monitor, with an infrared view of men on horses riding across the desert.
The military grade infrared view shows heat images in white, orange and
red, in great detail. The senior agent says

“Send out the units, I.D. them first before engaging.”

The younger agent puts on his headset, says

“Roger.”

A concrete wall with heavy metal garage doors open. Three black SUVs
exit out and speed up the ramp. They race across the desert floor.

Rick, Jim, Little John and Phil are riding the horses. Jim looks behind
them with night vision goggles and sees three SUVs coming towards
them.

Jim with a raised voice “We got company!”

They all look back. They begin putting their horses into a faster gear, by
hitting their sides with their saddle stirrups.

Little John says “Follow me.”

They are tracking across the desert with three SUVs chasing after them.

They all ride their horses into a large canyon. They get off the horses and
Little John shows them a hidden cave. The SUVs stop, men get out and
they scan the canyon with their night vision binoculars.

Two men in dark suits are looking at a monitor, which shows an infrared
view of three SUVs stopped with men standing. They are scanning the
large canyon and the desert area.

Younger agent with headset, says “...Got it.”

Senior agent says “Did they I.D. them?”

He replies “No, probably just some illegal coyote hunters.”

The senior agent looks unimpressed “Ok, bring back the

units.”

The San Diego harbor is quiet with just a few boats out. The city was
named after the Catholic Saint Didacus, commonly know as San Diego.
The city has hosted two world's fairs one in 1915, the other in 1935. The
original Spanish/Baroque fair structures are still standing in Balboa Park.

Rick, Jim, Little John and Phil ride up to Little John’s house. They get
off their horses and put them in a large stable. The Hummer is parked in

restaurant, eating at a table. He says

They should send some field agents to investigate. We can’t
lay our hopes on them, though. That’s why we’re Mexico
bound; pack your sun block and sunglasses.”

Mike says “I have rooms reserved here. You guys can clean up
and get some sleep, before the flight. We're just fifteen minutes
away from the airport.”

and is also a local tribal leader.”

The younger FBI Agent takes the paper and looks at it. He says

“In their words: Unknown black SUVs driving on their land,

dirt roads that fall into the desert, and underground buildings
that appear out of the nowhere... Sounds like, they had one

John says “Are we going straight to the airport?”

Male FBI Agent replies “We’re wasting our time. We have

been driving around for hours and haven’t seen a thing.”

Female FBI Agent says “This is not bad getting out of the
office, fresh air and all.”

did the e-mail say again?”

Female FBI Agent says “It mentioned a dirt road that ended in
middle of nowhere. This road is still going east... What’s the
plan?”

Male FBI Agent replies “Let’s follow it.”

The two agents get back into the SUV and drive down the dirt road.

are in the front passenger seats. Phil and Mike are in the back seat with

shooters begin firing out the windows. They start speeding through the
park, hitting curbs, running over bushes, hitting poles and small fences.

Jim says “John! Give it to them.”

John is firing from outside the window at the SUV. The bullet hits the
body of the black SUV and gets one of shooters in the arm. The shooter

John is out of bullets and tries to reload.

Janet says “Get back inside, John!”

John gets back inside and bullets strike both sides of the Hummer. Jim
gets hit with a stray bullet, right through the left shoulder.

The blue SUV is driving to end of a reservation dirt road. They stop and
the two agents get out.

Female FBI Agent says “Just like in the e-mail, the road
ended in the middle of nowhere.”

Male FBI Agent “This is strange, tire tracks and they stop
at the end of the road.”

He crouches down and looks at the dirt road. He picks up a small rock.

Janet replies “I got it.”

Rick says “Jim, can you still drive?”

He replies “Yes”

sight, on a side city street.

The sun is beginning to set over the reservation and some animals are
coming out of their hiding places. The two FBI agents are looking at a
dirt road.

Female FBI Agent says “It’s just a dirt road.”

Male FBI Agent says “Let’s get out of here.”

The two agents get up from crouching and start walking. The male agent
tosses the small rock that he was holding. A hollow metal sound is heard,
when it hits the road. They both look back.

The Hummer goes straight, but they are trapped. They are on a road
going down the Point Loma peninsula. The road ends at the Pacific

Chapter 15 The Goodbyes

The Hummer is seen driving down the peninsula, until they reach the
end. There are four black SUVs right behind them. Eight men with
automatic rifles and pistols, get out of four black SUVs. They all aim at
the Hummer.

Janet, John, and Phil are all on the city bus, looking out the windows
trying to spot the Hummer. They are seven minutes from the Lindbergh
International Airport.

Mike looks at Rick “What’s next?”

Rick a sober voice “It’s time to stop fighting.”

Jim grabs his shoulder and says “Ok.”

Rick, Mike and Jim get out of the Hummer with their hands on their
heads; except for Jim he can only raise one hand. Two men with
weapons, search the empty Hummer. The other six men are aiming their
weapons at them.

Rick looks at Mike and Jim “Thanks guys, it’s been good.”

Jim says “I can’t think of better way to end it.”

Mike responds “Me too.”

Janet, John, and Phil are boarding their flight to Mexico. They had a few
minutes to spare, before they closed the jet doors. They take their seats
on the aircraft, loading their carry-on luggage in the bins above.

standing by the Hummer. Eight men in suits have their automatic
weapons pointed at them.

contained. What are you orders?... Roger.”

He looks at the other men with automatics and says

“Handcuff them.”

Two men are looking at the financial virus program and then the digital

looking at part of the ramp.

The jet has just taken off, heading west. Janet has a window seat with
John sitting next to her. Phil is also has a window seat and is sitting right
behind them. Janet looks out the passenger side window.

Janet with raised voice “John, Phil, look!” she points at

Point Loma peninsula below.

Three men with hands behind their backs; they are standing at the edge
of the peninsula with the Hummer. Four black SUVs are parked nearby,
with eight gunmen pointing their weapons at them.

Phil says “It’s all of them. It doesn’t look good.”

Roger, I confirm ...”

Then out of nowhere, machine gun bullets strike the sand in front of the
four black SUVS. The sand shoots five feet in air with .50 caliber bullets
hitting it. Two U.S. Coastguard speed boats are near the beach, with
military men that have M-16s ready to fire. There is a man on a mounted
.50 caliber machine gun on the front of the each boat. The Coastguard
commander has a hand microphone, while holding a semi-automatic
pistol. He says

“This is the U.S. Coastguard, lay down your weapons and

hands on your heads, now! We will shoot to kill.”

The eight men quickly lay down their weapons and put their hands on
their heads. Rick, Mike and Jim handcuffed, are standing and stunned.

It is sunset on the Indian reservation with many FBI agents on the dirt
road, welders are cutting at sections of the ramp. Sparks light up the
dusk sky as they work. The ramp falls and reveals a concrete wall with a
large heavy metal garage door. The welders then walk down to the large
metal door and with cutting torches, begin to work again.

The coastguard men begin to take the cuffs off Mike and Jim. One man
looks at Jim’s shoulder and calls for a medic. Rick is talking with the
military commander in charge, while pointing at the eight gunmen.

The two original field FBI agents; who called it in, walk through a large
room with bare walls, chairs and empty tables.

Female FBI agent says “What do we have here?”

Male FBI Agent replies “I don’t know.”

Chapter 16 Fourth of July

John, Janet and Phil are in the Puerto Vallarta International airport lobby
with their bags. There are ceiling fans high above, plaster walls with
hotel ads on them and there is a slight ocean breeze. Phil’s wife and
daughter are waiting, behind a roped off area. They see Phil, both run
and hug him.

Phil says “Are you both, ok?”

The wife with tears, says “Were fine, we’ve missed you.”

Phil hugs them both and says “Everything is going to be

all right.”

In a downtown San Diego federal courthouse, eight men are standing

before a federal judge. A sharp looking lawyer is talking and holding
papers in his hand. Rick, Mike and Jim are sitting in the courtroom,
watching the hearing unfold.

A large white fishing boat is on the glistening ocean near Puerto

Vallarta, Mexico. Seagulls are flying nearby, waiting for a free meal.
The Mexican boat captain is at the wheel. Phil is in a fishing chair with
his wife and daughter standing nearby. He just started reeling in a big
fish. The fishing pole is bent over and Phil struggles to reel it in.

His young daughter says “Yea! You caught him.”

Janet and John are on the boat’s top deck, looking out across the deep
blue Pacific Ocean.

She says “You know my parents aren’t wealthy at all .”

John smiles and replies “Oh really.”

Traffic is getting heavy on all L.A. freeways. It's another Monday and
people are returning home from work. Some stop by fast food joints for a
quick meal, not wanting to cook after a long day at work. Others meet at

At a local Los Angeles restaurant, Phil and Rick are finishing their
dinner. They are talking at a table, with a television on at the bar.

Phil says “I want to say thanks for everything... How is

your wife doing?”

wife and daughter? You're back together, right?”

He responds “Yes we are and they’re great. Did you hear

about John’s marriage to Janet?”

Phil says "They should make a great couple."

Rick continues “Are you back teaching at the city college?"

He replies “Yes I am and enjoying it. I will miss John though,

as the class assistant. He graduates next month and already has
programming job offers.”

Rick then says “Oh, by the way.. Jim told me to invite you and
your family to their Fourth of July barbeque.”

Phil and Rick look at each other.

It is summer in Los Angeles and the temperature is in the mid-eighties.

John, Janet, Phil, Rick, Mike, Jim and Little John (all with their families)
are at Jim’s 4th of July outdoor barbecue. Everyone is eating ribs, hot
dogs for kids, they are drinking and enjoying themselves. Later that
evening, kids are playing with sparklers and some gather together to talk.

Phil says to Rick “What did the FBI find?”

He replies “Nothing, it’s now a cold case file.”

Phil looks confused “What about the eight gunmen or

black Monday?”

Rick responds “The gunmen were only charged with

possession and firing of illegal firearms, also some traffic
violations. They were released after paying fines, they all
disappeared and no trace of them to be found. The FBI
also searched for a virus or an unauthorized program in
the financial network system, but came up empty.”

two green SUVs pulling up to the main curb. Mike and Jim (in tuxes) get
out of the first one, scanning the area with small headsets on.

Mike says “It's all clear.”

Jim replies “I confirm.”

Rick is in tux with an earpiece, gets out of the second SUV. He helps
Jennifer Lopez out, takes her arm and escorts her on the red carpet. They
both walk into the theater's front entrance doors.
