FABRICATION AND STAGEWISE INSPECTION PROCEDURE OF THE CRYOGENIC TANKS
FABRICATION
1. Forming: Solution annealing shall be carried out on inner vessel dished ends after forming.
Normalizing shall be carried out on outer vessel dished ends after cold forming.
2. Welding: All the welding on stainless steel parts of the tank shall be carried out by Gas-purged
Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) & all the welding on carbon steel parts of the outer vessel of the tank
shall be carried out by Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) with root pass GTAW.
3. In case of cryogenic transportation tank, the liquid fill / drain port of the tank shall be provided with
antivortex baffles and the pressurization / vent port of the tank shall be provided with diffuser tube.
SURFACE TREATMENT
After fabrication, the interior and exterior surfaces of the inner vessel and the interior surface
of the nozzles, inter-connecting pipelines and flow components shall be cleaned by Mechanical
cleaning, De-greasing, Pickling, Passivation & Drying.
The interior and exterior surfaces of the outer vessel shall be sand-blasted and mechanically
cleaned. The interior surface of the outer vessel shall be properly de-greased.
Ultra-sonic test : All plates used for the fabrication of vessels and the pipes used for the nozzles and
inter-connection shall be subject to 100% ultra-sonic test using pulse-echo procedure to ASTM A 388
Radio-graphic test : All the (100% of the) stainless steel butt weld joints on the inner vessel as well as
the nozzles, interconnecting pipelines, flow components, etc and 10% of the butt weld joints on the
outer vessel shall be subject to radio-graphic test, X-rays to 2-T sensitivity.
Pressure test: The inner vessel as well as the outer vessel shall be subject to pneumatic pressure test
with GN2 at 1.25 times the respective MAWP. (Alternatively, hydraulic pressure test at 1.5 times the
respective MAWP may be employed. In such case, after the test, reasonably immediately, the
medium is to be dried down to a residual moisture content of 20 ppm, v).
Leak tests:
Before inserting the inner vessel into the outer vessel:
The Global leak tightness of the inner vessel shall be checked using Mass Spectrometer Helium Leak
Detector (GHe-MSLD).
b) While leak-testing the outer vessel, the inner vessel shall be pressurized to 2 bar, a using GN2 and
the vacuum jacket shall be pressurized with a mixture of 75% GN2 and 25% GHe to 2bar(a). Then
the outer surface of the outer vessel shall be probed for leaks. After completion of leak test de-
pressurize the jacket to atmospheric pressure before decreasing the pressure inside the inner vessel.
FABRICATION AND STAGEWISE INSPECTION PROCEDURE OF THE CRYOGENIC TANKS
Vacuum stabilization test: After evacuating the jacket to the required vacuum level (1.0 E 4 mbar), the
vacuum pressure shall be monitored at regular intervals over a period of 1 week and no rise in vacuum
pressure shall be permissible atatmospheric temperature on the inner vessel
Performance test: The tank shall be filled with LN2 to 50% of its gross volume and the evaporation loss rate
shall be measured by employing a gas flow meter/rotameter in the vent line. The LN2 required for this
purpose shall be arranged by the supplier. The measured evaporation loss rate with 50% LN2 filling shall be
extra-polated to that on full tank basis by theoretical computation. The evaporation loss rate thus
measured and extra-polated to full tank basis shall be less than 0.3% per day.
Super-insulated (SI) pipe line shall be subject to Weld joint test, Pressure test, Helium MSLD test,
Vacuum leak Test, Vacuum hold test & Cold pressure test with LN2.
Long Stem Cryogenic Globe Valve shall be subject to Bellows cyclic life test, Welding joint test,
Soundness test for casting, Pre-assembly Hydraulic shell pressure test, Final hydraulic shell pressure test,
Seat leakage test & Functional test.
Flow capacity of the burst disc shall be decided by the supplier based on loss of vacuum condition
in the jacket and fire engulfing around the tank as per CGA S-1.2.The discs shall be designed to burst at
the specified Burst Pressure. However, after bursting, gaseous/ Liquid Nitrogen shall flow through the
respective burst discs at the specified Flow temperature under steady state.
A suitable pressure regulator preset to feed GN2 from the ambient vaporizer for pressurizing the
tank shall be provided. A filter of 25 m (absolute) rating shall be fitted upstream of the regulator. Both
pressure regulator & filter shall be subjected to proof pressure test with water, Bubble leak (through &
external) test. All the interior flow surfaces of the regulator have to be de-greased and cleaned to Oxygen
service as per ASTM G 93 or CGA G-4.1 standard.
Pilot-operated, back pressure regulator to maintain a constant upstream (inlet) pressure at any
desired value within the setting range.
