Aaron Thomas
Generation No. 1
3
This is the ancestral home and family of all the
Thomases of this region, the last common home to which they
all trace back. Aaron had eight sons and several daughters;
soon the land around Roses Branch wouldnt hold them all and
they scattered. Jimmy and Henry went west, the rest of the
family gradually losing touch with them, and Hose and Jobe
moved to Kentucky, from where Dave, Jobes oldest son,
returned and settled in Double Island, marrying Hannah Hall, a
sister of Rile, Andys and Daves father.

This census indicates he was born in South Carolina. Must remember that
the boundaries of North Carolina and South Carolina were in contention at
one time.

Per other researchers James and Mary Louise Thomas migrated west
(possibly Kentucky?) and were buried there. Were there ever any children
from either union? Unsure Elmira Jane is child of this union. Where did
James Thomas migrate to from Georgia? Burial: Mt. Zion Cem., Union Co.,

It was learned several years ago that there were other children prior to
Joseph Monroe Thomas, having been born in Yancey County and if in fact
they were listed on the 1850 census for North Carolina these older children
could have been married by the time William and Nancy made the move to
Georgia and appeared on the 1860 census with Joseph being listed as the
eldest child. These older children are listed in the information provided.
William and Nancy are buried at the Mt. Olivet Baptist Church on the
shores of beautiful Lake Nottley (which was a Tennessee Valley Authority
TVA project Dam built around the late 1940's) in Union County off GA. Hwy
325. Information was provided by Bert Christy, a descendant of John
McDaniel Thomas through John and Elizabeth Willis Thomas' son Cornelius.
Mr. Christy lives in Roswell but was born in Dahlonega GA. He states that
William Hunsucker Thomas gave the land that the church is located on in
1877. William was known as "Billy" to all that knew him. In early July 2002
two new headstones for William and Nancy appeared in the church cemetery.
The graves lie between Syntha Thomas Beavers grave and her son William
Ausborn Beaver. There are 8 or more tombstones in the cemetery that are
just marked with the name of THOMAS. Mr. Christy states that these are
marking graves of the original markers were either stones or wooden
crosses which have long since disappeared. Members, descendants of the
line have provided the new tombstones. Information regarding the cemetery
can be found in CEMEMTERY RECORDS OF UNION COUNTY edited and
compiled by Dale Elliott and C.T. Wimpey, which substantiates that William
Hunsucker Thomas donated the land in 1877.
William H. Thomas is listed numerous times in the listing of marriages for
Union County, Georgia as Justice of the Peace, performing these marriages.
A big thank you to Dr. Charles T. Ingram of Jasper Georgia for steering me
to invaluable information regarding the descendants in this line.
William Thomas (this William?) enlisted for a six-month period under Col. T.
J. Haralson in the Anderson's Guards during the Civil War.

Some researchers show a son named Isaiah born in 1872 but there is nothing
on the census records to substantiate it. There is an Isaiah on the 1900
census records living next door to Tommy and Rachel in #47 Isaiah Thomas,,
Annah, Masouri, Florence and Elsie born 9/1898. None of this family seems
to know when they were born so no birthdates are listed. Its possible that
Tommy adopted him? There is a child born about 1872 to a black woman
named Phoebie Thomas living in Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., N.C. on the 1880
census? She and the child are the only two listed although Phoebie states
she is married. Isaiah Thomas is how he is listed.

There were several John Thomases in Fannin Co., so they were given
various nicknames. There was "Nickel" John, "Stocking" John, "Sleepy" John,
"Stiff Arm" John. This John Thomas was called "Black" John, supposedly
because of his dark complexion.
John and Mary Ann grew up in that portion of Union Co. that became
part of Fannin Co. in 1854. John served in the Union Army during the Civil
War and later received a pension. According to his application for pension
(see media), he was in Co. L, 4th Regiment, KY Cavalry. According to the
report of the Adjutant General of the State of Kentucky, he enlisted as a
corporal, 1/13/1864, at Louisville, KY, and mustered out 8/21/1865. He
traded his pension check for supplies acquired from Bob McKenney, a
retailer at Chestnut Gap.
On 3/1/1899, John purchased Lot 228, 9th Dist., 2nd sec., Colwell Dist.
from Enoch Rose for $900. This lot was next to lot 229, owned by George
W. and Daniel N. Mathis.
By 1869, John and Mary Ann had six children. On 9/1/1869, the baby,
L.J. Thomas (b. 6/5/1868) died. In December of 1870, all five of their
remaining children died of diphtheria, leaving them childless. After that,
they had Martha Josephine, my g-grandmother (b. 3/28/1875). Then they
had a son, William Lyda (b. May 1, 1878). He was called Lyda, pronounced lie-
dee.
Both Lyda and Josie married children of Dan and Martha Mathis, who
lived next door, making their children double first cousins. Lyda married
Callie Mathis, and Josie married my g-grandfather, John W. Mathis. by Ed
Mathis on the Rootsweb gedcoms on the internet.

Per correspondence from descendant, Robert C. Thomas, Jr., dated
July 30, 2002: "Nathan, the son from whom I descended, is known to
have served the Confederacy with the Black Mountain Boys, which
became Company C of the 16th North Carolina Infantry, Army of
Northern Virginia. He deserted the Confederacy after 17 months
(he signed up for 12 months) and went home. Reportedly,
Bushwackers were sent after him. Later because of how poorly his
family was treated first by the Raiders, and then by the
bushwackers, he fled with his family into Barboursville, Knox Co, KY
(there has been a story that he possibly signed up with the Union
Army at this point, but so far we have found no record to support
this claim), and ultimately ended up in Howell Co, MO. Here in 1878
he got into a fight with a man by the name of Richard "Dick" Jones.
Family legend has it that the cause for the fight went back to North
Carolina and his leaving the Black Mountain Boys. Jones had
previously announced he was going out and kill "Red" Thomas. During
the fight, Nathan clawed out the eyes of Dick Jones an dhit him in
the head with a stone. Having thought he had killed the man, Nathan
fled the area moving on to the Northwest territories of Washington
and Oregon, setteling in Walla Walla, WA, where he died Saturday,
January 22, 1881. At the time, he was working for Blalock's Mill, in
Walla Walla - you will find the Blalock name in Yancey Co, NC, and no
doubt Nathan went to Walla Walla because of a NC connection to
the Blalock family. Nathan is buried in an unmarked grave in Milton
(today known as Milton Freewater), Oregon Territory.
Nathan left his wife, Obedience Forbes Thomas, and children behind
in MO. The children were as follows:
1. Martin Van Buren (moved to Idaho)
2. Christopher Columbus (remained in MO)
3. Job Cornelius (remained in MO)
4. Nathan Clingman (moved to Idaho)
5. Mary Jane (remained in MO)
6. Sarah Amanda (remained in MO)
7. Ulysses Grant (moved to Idaho)
8. John Wesley (moved to Idaho)
9. Ida Frances (moved to Idaho)
10. Emily A. (stayed in MO)
11. Minnie Mae (moved to Idaho).
12. There was an additional son born after Martin Van Buren by
the name of William Waitsell Thomas. He died in Yancy County
in a fire."
53
Obedience filed for a divorce on 11-5-1878. It is the belief of
Robert C. Thomas that because of the timing this was probably done
in an attempt to shield Obedience and the children from the lawsuit
filed by Dick Jones.
