Barskey, A. E., Surendera Babu, A., Hernandez, A., & Espinoza, L. (2016). Patterns and trends of

newly diagnosed HIV infections among adults and adolescents in correctional and

noncorrectional facilities, United States, 2008-2011. American Journal Of Public

Health, 106(1), 103-109. Retrieved from EBSCOhost.

Summary: This article focuses on the trends of HIV in correctional facilities among certain races.
Specific tests were performed in order to analyze these trends over a span of years. The
study is trying to find out how the trends of HIV are in a correctional facility versus
outside of a correctional facility. The good news is over the years the amount of cases of
HIV have decreased, but it is still a major health problem in correctional facilities.

This article is useful because it helps me to understand how certain trends are formed inside
prisons and how you can analyze these trends by a disease that is being spread throughout the
facility.

from http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1177/0160449X0202700104

Summary: This journal article is about how the corporations can maximize their profits from
correctional facilities. Clearly, something is going on in society to where the prison populations
have increased greatly. The two main focuses of this article are capitalizing on prison
privatization and the prison industry.

I can use this article to help me understand how correctional facilities are interacting with
corporations and many reasons as to why the prison numbers are growing so rapidly.

News. Retrieved fromhttps://www.prisonlegalnews.org/news/2013/jan/15/contraband-

smuggling-a-problem-at-prisons-and-jails-nationwide/
Summary: Smuggling is a major struggle in prisons all across the United States. Not only is it an
issue that objects are getting smuggled into prisons, but the fact that it is also increasing
dangerous situations within the prison walls. Contraband is the term used for the items being
snuck into these facilities. Contraband can consist of things such as cellphones or illegal drugs.
I can use this article to help me better understand how technology in todays culture is affecting
those who are not even open to viewing the outside world and how that affects the
correctional facilities business.

Summary: Inmates are the target market when it comes to correctional facilities. They are the
main customers of these facilities, alongside of officers, workers, etc. This is a study focusing on
how mental illness is affecting the flow and number of inmates circulating throughout these
correctional facilities.

I can use this article to help me understand what is going on within the walls of correctional
facilities and how the inmates are being affected by what is going on outside of the facilities.

Tuberculosis in jails and prisons: United States, 2002-2013. American Journal Of Public

Health, 106(12), 2231-2237. Retrieved from EBSCOhost.

Summary: The health and cleanliness of correctional facilities has been an ongoing issue for
years now. A major disease that has been detected in these facilities is Tuberculosis.
Tuberculosis is a bacterial disease that can be spread simply by germs in the air. This
could consist of breathing, sneezing or coughing. It is curable, but when something like
this spreads so quickly in such a confined space, it can make matters difficult.

This article would be extremely useful in my industry report since it informs me how germs can
spread so quickly and how important healthcare is to the people in these correctional
facilities.

OHollaren, K. (2016, November). IBISWorld Industry Report 56121. correctional facilities in the

US. Retrieved from IBISWorld database.

Summary: The IBIS report provides general, yet detailed, information on the correctional
facilities industry in the United States. There are different tabs such as industry outlook,
products and markets, competitive landscape, etc. Major companies and key statistics are
provided in this report and are greatly useful when researching current information on
correctional facilities.

I can use this report to help me gain a general understanding of correctional facilities in the
United States today.

Venters, H. A Three-Dimensional action plan to raise the quality of care of US correctional

health and promote alternatives to incarceration. American Journal of Public Health.

106, 4, 613-614, Apr. 2016. Retrieved from EBSCOhost.

Summary: This article focuses on the medical care that is being taken inside of correctional
facilities. It also brings up possible solutions for ways to create alternatives to incarceration. The
main focus is health care and the costs that are being expensed inside of these facilities. It is a
right that inmates are given healthcare, but how to go about it efficiently.

This article helped me better understand how health care inside of correctional facilities
actually makes a great impact on the outside world and how business choose to go about
handling these situations.
