Disabilities (OPD)
Strategy Flexible/Rolling Due Dates
Goal/Objective The student will be able to complete a research project
on a historical topic of their choosing.

When to use this strategy This strategy should be used for students with
health/orthopedic disabilities that may have
intermittent attendance due to health issues, or may be
hospitalized for extended periods without warning.
Deadlines must be modified for these students, to allow
them more time to complete assignments around their
schedule.
Step by step instruction- How to use this 1). Before the year starts, discuss with the student and
in a social studies classroom. You will their parents regarding the type of disability the student
partner with a classmate to teach them has, and how frequently the student may be missing
your strategy so be explicit and provide a class for medical reasons
sample for your partner.
2). When the student needs to leave school for an
extended period of time, contact either the student, or
the students parents or guardians to discuss a new due-
date for the student. If neither can be contacted, discuss
this with the student when they return. It is unfair and
illegal under IDEA for a teacher to require a student to
complete an assignment while they are sick.

3). Create a new deadline, and a plan for completing the

assignment. Write that plan down, so that the student
can have access to it and see it. It also provides
documentation for administration if something happens.
Assessment- How could this strategy be Students with various health or orthopedic disabilities
used to evaluate student learning? will frequently find difficulties in demonstrating their
knowledge on time, because they are not physically in
school, due to treatment for their disability. As a result,
you must be lenient with due dates to allow them the
time to demonstrate their knowledge.
