You are going to see images of five cities and their landmarks. Write a
paragraph describing each city and country it belongs and the landmark shown.
Use the vocabulary from the box for the descriptions. The first one is done for

New York is a big city in the


United States (North
America). It takes thousand of
visitors every year. The city
has a population of around 8
million people. There is a lot
to see and do in New York.
You can visit the Central Park,
the Metropolian museum and
Times Square. In the picture
you can see the Statue of
Liberty, a monumet built
between 1875 and 1986. It is
93 meters tall. The statue is
New York (USA) The Statue of Liberty
located on Liberty Island in
the Hudson River.
St Peters Square is probably one of
the worlds most famous squares and
one of the most breath-taking. Designed
by Bernini during the seventeenth
century, it houses over 300,000 people.

It is located in VATICAN CITY at the


feet of ST. PETERS BASILICA. The
dimensions of the square are
spectacular: 320 meters long and 240
meters wide.

The construction of the square was


Rome (Italy) Saint Peters Square carried out between 1656 and 1667 at
the hand of Bernini, with the support of
Pope Alexander XII.

The most impressive part of the square,


besides its size, are its 284 columns
and 88 pilasters that flank the square in
a colonnade of four rows. Above the
columns there are 140 statues of saints
created in 1670 by the disciples of
Bernini.

In the centre of the square the obelisk


and the two fountains, one of Berni ni
(1675) and another of Maderno (1614)
stand out. The obelisk, which is 25
meters in height, was carried to Rome
from Egypt in 1586. The most
spectacular way to arrive at St. Peter's
Square is along the Via della
Conciliazione, a long street that begins
in the Castel Sant Angelo.
The Sydney Opera House is Australia's
most recognisable building and is an
icon of Australia's creative and technical
achievement. Since its completion in
1973 it has attracted worldwide acclaim
for its design and construction,
enhanced by its location on Bennelong
Point within a superb harbour setting.

The design of the building, with its


soaring white roof shell shaped sails
atop a massive red granite platform, has
Sydney (Australia) The Sydney Opera
House been internationally acclaimed as an
architectural icon of the 20th century. As
a dominant sculptural building that can
be seen and experienced from all sides,
it is the focal point of Sydney Harbour
and a reflection of its character.

Edinburgh Castle is situated on Castle


Rock in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland.
Castle Rock formed after a volcano
erupted over 340 million years ago. The
first castle that existed on the rock was
known as The Castle of the Maidens.
According to legend, the castle had
been a shrine to the Nine Maidens,
one of whom was Morgan le Fay.

Castle Rock had been a military base


and royal residence for centuries.
However, the edifice that is known as
Edinburgh (Scotland) Edinburgh Castle Edinburgh Castle was built during the
12th century by David I, son of Saint
Margaret of Scotland.

Edinburgh Castle has played a pivotal


role in Scottish history, both as a royal
residence King Malcolm Canmore (r
105893) and Queen Margaret first
made their home here in the 11th
century and as a military stronghold.
The castle last saw military action in
1745; from then until the 1920s it served
as the British army's main base in
Scotland. Today it is one of Scotland's
most atmospheric and popular tourist
attractions.
The Burj Khalifa (Califa Tower) is the
tallest building in the world with a height
of 828 meters. More than 12,000 people
from 30 countries participated in the
construction of the building. It was
previously known as Burj Dubai (Dubai
Tower).

Construction of the Burj Khalifa began


on September 21, 2004 and ended on
January 4, 2010, more than a year later
than expected. The skyscraper is
Dubai (United Arab Emirates) The Burj notable for having a large number of
Khalifa residential plants, something unusual so
far.

The Burj Khalifa has two viewpoints that


offer amazing views. On the 124th floor,
located 442 meters above sea level,
you will find the one that until now was
the only viewpoint of the Caliph Tower,
undoubtedly the best point of Dubai to
contemplate the city.

The second of the lookouts, recently


opened, captures all eyes after having
become the highest in the world
snatching this title from the Tower
Canton in Guangzhou. Located at 555
meters high, the viewpoint occupies the
148th floor of the building to offer
amazing bird's eye views of the city in
miniature, as it could not be otherwise
from such a height.
