Method Statement For Construction of Road Works

1.0 PURPOSE

The purpose of this method statement is to describe the construction of Road Works

2.0 SCOPE

The scope of works for this method statement is to construct Road Works according to
specification, dimensions and setting out as per construction drawings.

3.0 REFERENCE DOCUMENT

The Road shall be constructed in conformance to the followings:

Construction Drawing

Contract Specification

4.0 SEQUENCE OF WORK

4.1 Survey Work

Surveyor shall set out the alignment of the road and road formation levels at 15m
intervals.

4.2 Preparation of Sub-Grade

Excavate/fill and trim to formation level and grading to required slopes, cambers, super
elevation etc.

Check for soft spots and repair according to specification. Carry out sub-grade
compaction with vibrating roller and carry out correction of levels where necessary and
conduct field density test.

4.3 Construction of 150mm thick Sub-Base

Install level pegs for sub-base, then lay 150mm thick approved crusher run by spreading
evenly to the full width of the road bed. Motor grader is used to level to the designed
slopes, shape and super elevation.

Carry out compaction test by using vibrating roller starting along the edges and proceed
towards the centre in the longitudinal direction. After compaction, check and correct any
irregularities and loose and segregated material and re-compact. The top surface of the
sub-base shall have the required shape, super elevation, levels and grades.

4.4 Construction of 300mm thick Base Course

Install level pegs for base course then lay 300mm thick approved crusher run by
spreading evenly to the full width of the road bed. Motor grader is used to level to the
designed slopes, shape and super elevation.

Carry out compaction test by using vibrating roller starting along the edges and proceed
towards the centre in the longitudinal direction. After compaction, check and correct any
irregularities and loose and segregated material and re-compact. The top surface of the
road base shall have the required shape, super elevation, levels and grades. Joint dipping
shall be performed at every completed layer of sub-base and road base.

4.5 Bitumen Premix Binder and Wearing Course (60mm ACB28 and 40mm ACW20)

4.5.1 Binder Course

To check and ensure the stone base is conformed to design cross-fall. Immediately prior
to applying bituminous material, the full width of the surface to be treated shall be swept
using a power broom, scrapped using hand tools to remove all dirt, dust and other
objectionable material. Apply bitumen prime coat (MC 30) by using pressure distributor
and shall be left for 24 hours before laying of binder course. Lay 60mm thick approved
bitumen premix binder course by mechanically means. The thickness of the binder
course shall be controlled and maintained.

The initial rolling shall commence as soon as the premix is sufficiently cool (not less
than 110 C). Rolling is to be done using a Tandem Steel Mechanical Roller. Rolling
shall start from the edges and progress towards the centre in the longitudinal direction.
Rolling shall be overlapping runs at half wheel width. The number of passes as below
is subjected to trial run on site:-

Item Type of Roller No. of Passes

1 Initial Rolling Tandem Roller 2 passes (no vibration)

2 Intermediate Rolling - Tandem Roller 4 passes with vibration

- Pneumatic Tyre Roller 6 passes (no vibration)

3 Finishing Rolling Tandem Roller 2 passes (no vibration)

4.5.2 Wearing Course

Immediately prior to applying bituminous tack coat, the full width of the surface to be
treated shall be swept using a power broom, scraped using hand tools, to remove all dirt,
dust and other objectionable material.

Spray bitumen tack coat (RS-1K) by using pressure distributor over the completed
binder course. Lay 40mm thick approved bitumen wearing binder course by using a
mechanical finisher. The thickness of the binder course shall be monitored to maintain
the required thickness after compaction.

1 Initial Rolling Tandem Roller 2 passes (no vibration)

2 Intermediate Rolling - Tandem Roller 4 passes with vibration

- Pneumatic Tyre Roller 6 passes (no vibration)

3 Finishing Rolling Tandem Roller 2 passes (no vibration)

4.5.3 Construction Joint

The construction joint for laying of premix is usually by flushing or by cutting.
