THEORY

One of the theories we applied in assessing our patient is Marjory Gordon

Functional Health Patterns. Which is used to determine the clients functional abilities,
normal routine for activities of daily living, lifestyle patterns, strengths, family support,
coping skills, health care concerns and health care goals. This theory is applicable to
provide comprehensive nursing assessment of the patient, with the use of this
assessment we are able to provide different interventions. We assess the functional
abilities to determine the physical movement and the extend of the mobility, normal
routine for activities of daily living to determine the physical changes to do the activities,
lifestyle patterns to determine the routine or hobbies that he has, strength to determine
the extent of the patients physical capabilities, family support to know if the family are
aware of the client status, coping skills if the client were able to cope with his current
situation, health care concerns if they were able to be concern of the current standing
and the health care goal to determine if they want to achieve the optimum wellness.
These assessment is also an excellent opportunity to form a therapeutic relationship with
the client.

Another theory used is Florence Nightingales Environmental theory. Nightingale

is best known in the importance of five points in achieving a healthy state such as pure
air, pure water, efficient drainage, cleanliness and light. This theory is applied in order to
assess the environment of the operating room wherein a sterile atmosphere is instituted.
In the way of a proper surgical asepsis in the surgical ward to minimize the possibility of
having the risk of infection. This focuses in the alteration of the patients environment in
order to affect the change in his health. This environmental factors will affect the patients
current situation, it also influence the client outcomes. Nightingale said a healthy
environment is essential for healing. Addressing the factors altered in a way the best care
for the patient needs. The nightingale environmental is one of the important factors that
should be address to minimize the different complication, if there were no proper surgical
asepsis more infections will be noted. Promoting a proper sterility will ease the patient
status in the operating room. This is not only applicable in the operating room but as well
in the post anesthesia care unit, surgical ward and until the patient may go home.

Maslows Hierarchy of Needs was also used. This is to prioritize the patients needs
which was the physiological needs, safety, love and belongings, self-esteem and self-
actualization. The patient was well cared of in order to ease the pain to achieve the
optimum wellness, we consider the childs ability to do the daily activities. In assessing
the patients physiological needs, we consider his parents capability to provide home and
shelter, food and the basic necessities of life. While assessing his safety, we take most
considerations of his parents ability to protect the child and security of the child. We also
assess the sense of belongingness of the child by asking the client of him being taken care
of. And if this caring, protecting and supporting him boosts himself to face different
people outside home and in the school. And in the childs eyes and level of consciousness
and perception, is the child able to feel complete and self-actualize.
