The Army of the Republic of Vietnam are the ground forces of the
South Vietnamese military from its inception in 1955 until the Fall of
Saigon in 1975. It is estimated to have suffered 1,394,000 casualties
(killed and wounded) during the Vietnam War. Although the American
news media has often portrayed the Vietnam War as a primarily
American and North Vietnamese conflict, the ARVN carried the brunt
of the fight before and after large-scale American involvement, and
participated in many major operations with American troops.

Vietnamization
The Tet Offensive increased public discontent with American
participation in the Vietnam War and led the U.S. to gradually
withdraw combat forces and to shift responsibility to the South
Vietnamese, a process called Vietnamization
