priority products for development due to huge forward and backward linkages,
labor intensive and pro-environment.
Types of seaweed which are widely cultivated almost throughout Indonesia
namely Gracillaria sp as a source for Agar and Euchema sp (E. cottoni and
E. spinosum) as sources for carrageenan. Sargassum sp which is popular as
a source of alginate also plenty in the wild and now is being developed. So is
another red algae Phorohyra sp.
Currently, Indonesia is the biggest producer of cultivated tropical seaweeds
such as Euchema/Kappaphycus and Gracillaria. Considering the strong supply
of raw materials locally, seaweed processing industry has also been growing
rapidly. During 2012 to 2014, the number of processing plants has increased
from 17 to 39 companies. It consists of 13 companies producing ATC, 13
companies producing carrageenan and 13 companies producing agar. Those
companies are already equipped with modern machineries and comply to
HACCP and ISO 2200 principles, as well as Kosher and Halal certificates.
