Overall, it was evident that everyone is working very hard. But ultimate success lies not just in
working hard but working hard and smart at the same time. The best way to work smart is to apply
divine wisdom into the work we do. Few individual teachers seem to have along the passage of time lost
touch with divine wisdom, acquired through understanding the Word of God during their initial training
and latter mentorship programs. They seem to be caught up in the mesh of error spun by outmoded
sociopolitical and ecclesiastical institutions which have
replaced unerring divine guidance. Manmade religious
institutions are based on the concept of two trees we are
right and they are wrong. One tree is the chosen people
and other tree are the infidels. One tree is the right
treewhose people who go to heaven and the other tree is
the wrong treewhose adherence go to hell. This duality
concept for thousands of years caused oceans of
bloodshed and countless human suffrage leading to the
troubled world we live in today. Religious hatred, national
pride, racial prejudice, discrimination of females,
exploitation of the poor and weak by the rich and powerful
has led to world wide spread of war and terrorism, poverty, famine and hunger. Rulers of nations and
religious leaders are involved in endless arguments and conflicts while the worlds major religions
remain divided and impotent to guide its adherence towards future with hope. The environment is in a
serious state due to human interference based on greed and we are unable to agree on possible
solutions. Each day the print and electronic media brings fresh news of environmental destruction and
human horror from all parts of the world. Losing touch with divine guidance, the world appears more
selfish and more materialistic, demonstrating symptoms of a planet that is spiritually sick. Some even
wonder if God has taken a vacation. At such a crucial time in the planets history the voice of Bahullh
- the latest Messenger from God to humanity - emphasizes that there is only one tree, Ye are the fruits
of one tree, and the leaves of one branch. Deal ye one with another with the utmost love and harmony,
Light. That they differ one from another is to be attributed to the varying requirements of the ages in
which they were promulgated. At a time when the world is torn apart by religious fanaticism and
The goals of achievements at YBTI are strikingly in harmony with the Indonesian governments Pancasila
Five Principles and the governments contemporary efforts in character development based on their
aims for a mental revolution in Indonesia.
The requirements of the law by the government for schools that needs to be independent was
shared with all. The principals of all schools were requested to give serious though about this and
consult with all teachers about their future journey. The use of their own free will was even overstressed
that they have the freedom either to continue along their own path of growth within each school or
stay affiliated with YBTI as an independent school but on the conditions that the founding principles of
YBTI may not be compromised.
Let not thy hands tremble nor thy heart be disturbed, but rather be confident and firm in the
love of thy Lord, the Merciful, the Clement.
Before the reflection meeting in Sibolangit, I felt that responsibility was limited to the tasks that
we do in school. But after the meeting my level of responsibility towards school is increasing. From the
Sibolangit gathering I now know the concept of pick up the ball, and understand that building a
relation with the government is not about getting something from them we really develop relationships
with them. But how does the relationship with the village government be fostered? By making time and
providing opportunity for them to be involved and work together in village development activities.
Furthermore, the responsibility that increased within me is, how to improve the quality of teaching
in schools so that the number of students will also increase. And now I have the opportunity to be part
of the indicator development team, maybe a lot of things that I have to do, what I am not used to do. I
also feel there are new challenges that I have to take responsibility for. I am very grateful for this
opportunity because there is space to increase my knowledge about things related to the curriculum,
even though it is not yet clear what my future role in this indicator development team. I am very excited
with all these processes. Thank you, and lets keep our spirits high.
The reflection meeting in Sibolangit made it clear to my personal understanding the concept
of independence. There was an explanation from Mr. Zaf that CEC Pangaribuan is not a YBTIs school
anymore, it is our school, teachers who serve there, and we are independent. Independence is not
merely about material means or money. We feel more confident that we have to be independent in
managing this school to grow. No waiting for orders from the office of YBTI as to what we should do.
Before the reflection meeting in Sibolangit, I thought that our school independence was just
about tuition, teachers salary and all the needs of a school, uniform school fees etc. So, we have to
raise the tuition fee, get a lot of students to cover it. But it turned out that independence was more
about to how we think in terms of development of this school. How little initiatives we do by ourselves
will have a great influence on the school. The schools fate is in our hands. Thats is true independence.
Laziness is a Cancer
By Teacher Muli, CEC Parbuluan.
A key experience I got from the Sibolangit meeting was about the word lazy. I truly admit that
laziness is a cancer. I have experienced this myself. I wanted to plant something in my field, but I always
postponed it, so until now no result is obtained from the fields, because it was always planned but never
acted upon. I can learn from that experience now, that the work must be done right away without any
delay, because laziness is a cancer that is very dangerous to life.
So, a week after the reflection meeting I kept thinking of those words and decided to change.
When I see there is a job to do, I quickly do it without any delay. And I also practice it in my daily school
work now, for example, in maintaining the cleanliness of the school park, I no longer wait for the
cleaning schedule but whenever I have spare time I clean it. Also, on Saturday July 15, 2017, I have
shared the principle of not procrastinating with our team, If we postpone our work, later we, ourselves
would feel its negative impact and reap the results for example when we postpone evaluation of the
lesson plan for later, we will forget what had happened and if its postponed for a long time, we then
could fabricate facts when we write it. I saw that it became an inspiration for my teams work. So, thanks
to Mr. Zaf because I have been inspired by the words he shared that laziness is cancer.
Children is My Inspiration
By Gelora Sagala, CEC Parbuluan.
In April 2017 my husband was offered a job in Medan and planned to move there. When I
heard the word move I remembered my work and the children. Husband had said if we move, I can rest
more than usual. If imagined it is fun to be a housewife who do homework only, but in the place where
I am now, I have felt comfortable every day together with a lot of children, so do at home always having
a lot of children. Even though the cleanliness of the house always become a problem and I have to mop
it more ofthen, its fine for me because at the same time I can teach them to be responsible.
At the time of the meeting in Sibolangit, after entering the room for having a rest, I always think
of the videos that aired, why there is hunger and murder? Whereas we know the culprit is not a person
who dont received high education. But why? Because they have no love, they have high education
which is only look at the academic but character. If they have love, would they may do things that are
not favored by God?. From the meeting in Sibolangit makes my consciousness increase, eager to be
able to transform children into a noble human being for future. And this is why I want to spend more
time with YBTI because besides I am required to teach character to the children, while doing that I also
teaching myself and others about the character. Dont ever calculate our energy with money because
all the good that we do must have wages from the All Mighty. My Pray, hopefully the husband always
support and God gave the best way. Amin
I am a Teacher!
By Eva Simatupang, CS Pekan Tolan.
July 3 - 7, 2017, we attended a gathering held in Sibolangit joining the big family members of
YBTI-Universal from Medan, Pancur Batu, Sidikalang, Mentawai and South Labuhanbatu. The Pekan
Tolan Group arrived late at the venue but we felt warmly welcomed with hugs and kisses and lots of
laughter released by the longing of seeing each other.
What I learnt from there was that a school should have a clear VISION and MISSION to achieve
the goals, even though until this day I am still trying to improve the vision and the mission of our school.
A teacher is profession of high standing and a mother is the earliest educator of the child. Since a
woman plays a key role in developing her childs intelligence, lets not belittle her or let her down.
Further I learnt the importance of providing understanding to a community regarding the concept of
Oneness and Unity in Diversity. Since truth is one, we have to provide understanding to others that we
all should not discriminate among religions, and should not divide it into boxes of division.
Discussion about Home Visit was one of the most important programs that I felt strong -
establish relationships among parents, knowing the development of students. Listen to the success of
my friends in putting the scriptures to gain strength from God, is one thing we should try in my school.
From sharing session on Open Days success in schools, we got a lot of new ideas that can be done
because open day is one of the promotional tools for schools. Praise God, up to date on 18 July 2017,
we have 21 new student registered. We are overwhelmed and are dividing the class since the spce is
not adequate. Hopefully, there is a solution how we can overcome it. Lesson plan is made not a must,
but is a reality. Public relation is developing the correct way of having meaningful conversations to
develop a school base on character and the physical with the help of government and local
communities. These are all programs to support us as change agents for students, families and
communities.
Harvest - August 2017 Page 9
That was my personal learning. Since the three of us from the same school had different learning
processes, I share the learnings of my two other colleagues:
Teacher Hasanah Safitrit
Understanding the state and conditions throughout the world, where there are many important
issues to be addressed, especially concerning the understanding of the meaning of unity, the lack of
world concern for education, health and agriculture that are clearly visible from the budgets of States,
so my desire is slowly bring understanding of Unity through education we offer in school.
Impressing to see the video presented by Mr. Zafarullah, about a child singing a song titled I,
am a teacher because the song made us touched and made us even more proud to be a teacher, and
we want to get the video along with other videos.
The passion and longing to meet such great friends encouraged me to go to this event. The
gentle winds the green trees and the natural beauty of the venue made us forget all our troubles.
During the sessions, there is one thing that made me feel hurt, like a slap across my face it really
really hurt my heart, when I saw the videos presented by Mr. Zafarullah Hassim about facts that actually
happened to this world - malnutrition, lack of water, wars everywhere and many more
All this happens not because of lack of resources but because of the greed of our brothers and
sisters who prevent many people from getting what they deserve.
We, specially myself, am really determined to make changes for the children we are educating
now. We bear a great responsibility on our shoulders to make our children become more competent in
behavior and act with spiritual empathize on honesty tolerance etc. Be assured we can do this, because
I am a teacher we will open their minds, we are the stars that no one can stop our rays, because Im
a teacher.
That is the experience we can share from the Sibolangit Reflection meeting, and as Teacher
Duma says, its all because I am A teacher who brings a small change in the arena of our service, so it
is important to always Pray - Understand - Practice.
Greetings from TK CEC Pekan Tolan.

Involved in a four-day reflection gathering activity in Sibolangit, there were many reinforcements
and explanations that I could take as lessons and use it as grip for myself in doing services on this earth.
Few important points from the Songs that I can hold on to, is how a teacher should maintain his or her
quality as the quotations below:
1. Create indicators for yourself and the work you want to accomplish.
2. Open your heart to the Lord when you serve and instill the seed of your faith in a pure heart.
Although I have not been fully able to practice the above points, they are bright spots that can
inspire me to survive today. Indeed, I do not deny that the material nature is stronger than the spiritual
world that I face, but there is a bright spot that I can grip on the sidelines during all difficulties that I face
in life.
Sometimes it crosses my mind - what is it worth being a kindergarten teacher? Income is not
enough to cover the household needs But with that same heart I feel I made an important decision
for the sustainability of children. Children should support each other in the realization of life as they
grow up. Those who generate better income must be responsible for themselves and help younger
ones. With such hope, I gain stamina to fight behind this blurry life, so later I can look forward for
Happiness at Old Age.

I Believe
By Listerwati Rajagukguk, CEC Paninjoan.
When the school is getting closer to be independent, my thoughts were to stop teaching,
because CEC Paninjoan has the least number of students compared to other CECs. Deep down in my
heart I was very sad since I have been in the process of teaching for nearly 10 years. 10 Years is not a
short time, I was so sad thinking that I have to stop being a teacher. But I have to earn money too to
make ends meet in daily life. I was thinking of becoming a merchant or a farmer. I see a great opportunity
to do farming at my place because there is enough land and also at the same time I can sell some little
things to make money.
But after the Reflection Meeting in Sibolangit, I was convinced that the decision I made in being
a teacher, I believe is true. I have to continue with my school the Creative Education Center of Paninjoan.
I know this is not easy but I have to keep trying. If friends in another CEC can survive, why I cant I survive
too? I am now confident with my decision, my capacity and my strength. Im not afraid because I love
God and believe in the power of the Word of God. I believe and I know this is true.
The story begins in December 2016, with the experience of a family of a student of our school
Arga. His family travelled to their home town in North Sumatera to Celebrate New year. They stayed with
the paternal grandparents of Arga. One day Arga requested his father to visit his maternal grandmothers
house. Father responded Daddy cant go there, because your grandmother is angry with me. Why is
she angry with you? Roy asked. Father replied, Because I took your mom and ran away from home.
Suddenly Roy said, Tell grandmother that you are sorry and promise that you will not take her daughter
and run way again Go and apologize to grandmother. Arga repeatedly pleaded his father to apologize.
All night his father could not sleep, with his sons words ringing in his head. He kept thinking and felt
deep in his heart, how come my son who is just a child teaches me to apologize?
The next day Argas father decided to go with Arga and his mother to grandmas house to
oblige his request. The trip was filled with fear because this was not the first experience going there,
and every time they had gone there, they were not accepted by Argas grandmother and even chased
away. Arriving at front of the door of the house, Argas mother called her own mother. Grandmother
came out, but once she saw Argas father, she immediately she chased them all away. Take him away
I do not like him All of you, go away, She started screaming. With tears in her eyes Argas mother
responded, Accept us ma forgive us dont be like this, but Argas grandmother disappeared
inside, leaving the family outside.
Then the uncle of Arga was summoned from the shop. From a distance Argas father watched
with fear, but his brother-in-law greeted him with a smile and invited them into the house. Then the two
older brothers of Argas mother arrived and persuaded their mother to forgive Argas father. After half
an hour of heated conversations, the two brothers with their mother approached Argas Father. Argas
mother kept crying apologetically. Its my fault let the past be in the past please do not say your
family is your family and my family is my family anymore now it is our family. After much persuasion,
the families were able to be united.
Argas father told one of the teacher that he is very happy that his family is united and this unity
has contributed to greater happiness in their life and even their business is now running smoothly. We,
teachers at CEC Simatoro, were shocked by hearing this news and extremely happy. This goes to prove
how children learning virtues at school can impact a change in their parents. Although this was a very
personal matter, during the Open Day, Argas father shared this story with pride of his son. He also said
that if YBTI had opened an elementary school, he would definitely send Arga to YBTI Elementary
School.
If we assist children to apply in their lives the virtues they learn at school, this could slowly
transform society, is the belief of us teachers at CEC Simatoro. Parents will better understand the
importance of the lessons in character development, which would change the mindset of the community
towards our school. The community support to the schools will be enhanced where character education
is prioritized.
Maybe friends are confused with the title of this article, and ask how can Home Visits and Public
Relations be an effort to offer spiritual friendships. It all started with giving some thought to the public
relation work that I have been doing and the new learnings and understanding I learned on the purpose
of Home visits and building relations with people in the circle of influence. I feel now that the home visit
and public relations my team and I are doing is still very minimum and meaningless. We never thought
to have conversations with people around our residence. We did not see that actually there is a lot of
space that can be used to talk about the virtues - campaigning virtues.
During home visits, we did not try to talk in a more broader sense than just the development of
children to make a check list. In fact, there are many spaces that we can have meaningful conversations.
For example, when someone dies, people usually talk about the death process of that person, the
condition of death process linked to their behavior during the persons lifetime and finally the
conversation ends with what sins that person has committed. Having gained a new understanding on
the nature of the soul, and the importance of sharing the concept of the spiritual nature of human
beings, I understood that the funeral house can be one space to share about the concept of life and
death and it turned out that many people were interested in talking about it and this turned into a
meaningful conversation. From that experience, I started to think and look for other space for the
campaign of virtues and sharing the concept of the spiritual nature of the human being.
I am also thinking of how to do spontaneous public relations, having conversations utilizing
Holy Writing or parables or famous quotes during Home visits - visiting home of the parents and asking
questions about what the child does at home and develop a meaningful conversation utilizing Holy
Writings. This is the different between my old concept of home visits and the new one.

In relation to the schools independence process, my role as principal and that of other team
members is to work together to develop a common vision and explain to the community that CEC
Saurausau belongs to the community and is not the property of a foundation or a single teacher. We
have to sustain teamwork where teachers and parents work together in playing an active role in
promoting values and virtues on a continuous basis without boredom. Although a few people may
have negative comments and react with anger and backbite in the community, we should not lose hope
or give up on building a new understanding within those few people. In the beginning, it is really not
easy It is even very difficult and very scary, but by continuing to communicate with them and utilizing
various approaches, finally and slowly you will see the fruits of your labor.
I take this opportunity to share the various processes that I have faced and to show how a
difficult process finally and steadily begins to show results:
Mr. Restu and Mrs. Asmadi came to Saurausau to study the book on The life of the soul together with
some members of the Parent Teacher Committee and few other community members, and it was
continued with the Devotional meeting activity. That activity raised various prejudices that this is the
process of targeting a person to embrace a particular religion. If you are looking for people to open a
new religion here, go to an island where there are people who have no religion yet. We all here have a
religion, was one of the comments that emerged. Hearing this, I shared this understanding, Sorry sir,
their intention is not to spread the teachings of religion or make us enter their religion. But instead they
want to help us with the same mindset that prepares a young generation who loves God by knowing his
or her identity that he or she was created by a Creator that is God and He is the only One. This
explanation was not accepted, and we got involved in a heated debate. I extended a word that may be
very painful to him, and for a sometime we were having very fragile relationship. This challenge put a
stop to the devotional meetings that I had started by then. I always try to greet him at church. Actually,
I understood that they wanted me to teach my religion not the religion of others, because the assumption
was that study about the life of the soul was a way of teaching the Bah Faith. I always tried to say hello
and talk to them.
Harvest - August 2017 Page 22
It took a long time to provide an adequate understanding, and finally in November 2016 I invited them
to the two-day workshop, and they seemed to be excited and even fascinated by studying the analogy
of the human embryo to understand a glimpse of the human soul. Our relationship now has recovered.
At the end of November 2016 workshop, I did not know what I should do as a follow-up to the
learning of the true life. I met the head of the parent teacher committee in his home and by chance two
other members of parent teachers committee were there too. I started to express my worries about
what we could do to change our life and our environment. The chairman replied, I have an idea, not a
big thing, but we start small things, pray together, we start again our devotional meeting. All members
agreed. Since then we agreed to conduct a Devotional Meeting once a week. We started with 7 people
who were mostly fathers. Thanks to God, as a result of our efforts together, having conversation with
other people, especially families, now 7 families consisting of father, mother and children totaling 23
people are involved in the Devotional Meetings. Every Sunday night our Devotional Meeting starts at 7
pm. After prayers, we have a little discussion about the true nature of life or education of children,
which I prepare beforehand. I came to know that this Devotional gathering has become a topic of
community talk as to what are we doing there. But now I am not the only one providing explanation, all
participants of the devotional meeting explain about the activity. Now, a few others have shown interest
and wants to join us.
As some time passed conducting Devotional Meetings with conversations on the concept of
the spiritual nature of human being, I notice many changes in the way of thinking of community
members, especially those of the Parent Teacher Committee. During preparatory consultations for
Open Day in June 2017, each parent was obliged to contribute Rp. 50.000 to purchase pork, chicken
and spices. But at the deadline only one parent had contributed. Some began to blame the fathers, who
failed to contribute.
But the Parents Teachers Committee and the Open Day Committee came up with a creative
solution. Instead of focusing on the Rp. 50,000,- not paid they focused on the other non-monitory
contributions the parents had provided.
One mother had completed to satisfaction all the tasks assigned to her. One father gave a small
contribution to the community endowment for Open Day. He was the first person who took the initiative
to dismantle the tent, after the Open Day celebrations being their 30 minutes before the agreed upon
time. When the tent had collapsed on the night before the Open Day due to heavy rains and wind, the
decorating committee gathered at the school at 4:00 in the morning while it was still dark and fixed
everything. Other parents woke up at 04:00 in the morning, fathers slaughtering pigs and chicken,
mothers preparing spices and cooking utensils and by 7:00 am everything was ready for the Open
Day. All these involvements I suppose makes the community take responsibility for the school with a
feeling of ownership. This further was proved by the increased number of guests who attended the
Open Day celebration that totaled to approximately 300 people, whereas in previous years we had
never witnesses even 100 persons.
Dear friends, all this success is due to the process of meaningful conversations process we
have been engaged in the work of our CEC. We try to keep our spirits high by remember the quotation,
God always helps us, when we ask it will be given to you, knock the door and the door will be opened
for you, search then you will find it.
In my opinion, with the new approach to Home Visit and Public Relations, we get to know the
real life problems in families and society around us. The openness of society requires learning together
and finding a way out, not just quick solutions. It takes time to understand a problem.
Home Visits and Public Relations alike have a role in sharing happiness. So it should not be a
fear and this is what we need to understand together. Therefore, we need to reflect and ask ourselves
if we conduct Home Visit or Public Relations because it is just a task of or work, or because of love for
God? The key to the answer id within us.
During my Home Visits and Public Relations, I gained a lot of experience from the community,
government and local authorities. We cannot see a single point of view but we have to follow up and
not fight or impose our opinion. Thats what the CEC Sarausau team has learnt.
Finally, I want to share a quote I love on offering spiritual friendship:
Friendship is walking with others, not pushing or pulling them, but be there beside them and offering
explanatory questions that help them to find their own wisdom. Friendship is called spiritual because
it solves problems more in meaning, real situation and good qualities. Friendship strengthens character
by calling virtues on the subject matter. Friendship is not a quick solution. Friendship means listening in
such a way that a person who is heard can hear themselves and find their own clarity.
It happened one day in the time of Christmay the life of the world be a sacrifice unto Himthat He
passed by the dead body of a dog, a carcass reeking, hideous, the limbs rotting away. One of those
present said: How foul its stench! And another said: How sickening! How loathsome! To be brief,
The Messiahs sin-covering gaze did not for a moment dwell upon the repulsiveness of that carrion.
The one element of that dead dogs carcass which was not abomination was the teeth: and Jesus
Thus is it incumbent upon us, when we direct our gaze toward other people, to see where they excel,
Praise be to God, thy goal is to promote the well-being of humankind and to help the souls to
overcome their faults. This good intention will produce laudable results.
- Abdul-Baha.
