NOTES
TRADITIONAL WORSHIP
From time to time you may hear the phrase "the flow of
worship." Liquids flow. So what do people mean when
they say worship flows? I think I might say, worship has
continuity rather than flow. Nowhere in the Bible is there
a prescriptive order of worship. Most certainly there
are specific recurring components: praise, confession,
Scripture reading, singing, proclaiming, responding, and
communing. When we plan services, we are very aware
of the various parts and functions in worship. The overall
movement in worship is that of gathering together and
acknowledging the presence of God. Notice we never
invite God into worship. He is the one who invites us
to acknowledge His presence among us. Hence in the
beginning of worship, we are the ones bowing before
Him in our hearts having become consciously aware of
where we are and in whose presence we stand. Notice
the Welcome often begins with the words In the name
of Jesus Christ, we welcome you You see we are not
just a group of people gathering to sing, pray, read the
Bible, and hear inspiring words. We are a small part of
the Body of Christ who have acknowledged the presence
of God in our midst. That ought to be somewhat sobering.
The opening Call to Worship, hearkens back to the Old
Testament God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The opening
hymn alludes to the New Testament Day of Pentecost
and the infilling of the Holy Spirit. There is continuity
between the Testaments in the opening minutes of
worship. Worship tells Gods story with a beginning,
middle, and end. Look for it. -Dr. Dan Sharp
