DEFINITION
The business in which the merchant sells directly to the final recipient of the product,
obtaining a profit for the difference between the purchase price and the sale. It is
also called retail trade.
The retail market in Colombia is formed by the large hypermarkets and chain stores
that offer consumers the categories of products presented above. The retail sector
with the greatest participation in the Colombian market, has a presence at the
national level, as is the case of the business group Exito, Metro and Olimpica.

CHARACTERISTICS OF RETAILS
This sector also includes the without establishment retail traders who carry

The main advantage is that the big commercial chains represent a big
exhibition of its products.
Products marketed in retail are generally of good quality, which requires good
production processes, because they have quality departments that oversee
their suppliers.
They are entertainment venues that allow not only the satisfaction of the
material needs of the consumers but also that of the social necessities.
RETAIL IN COLOMBIA
Exito is the largest retail player in Colombia. Its revenues in 2016 reached $11.4
trillion and an increase of 6.1%. Participates with 35% of the total of the category. In
addition, the Exito generates 65.7% of revenue, followed by Surtimax with 14.4%.
During the month of November 2016, the real sales of retail trade grew in the five
cities studied. The largest growths were recorded in Medellin with 6.5%, Bogot with
5.4% and Cali with 5.0%.
