QUESTIONS OF OTHERNESS IN THE NOVELS

OF SLOBODAN SELENIC

Summary

The novels of Slobodan Selenic represent a unique history of the Serbian

civil society. The binary oppositions are perceived as a creative principle. This
principle conditions the possibility of narrating and the narrator type. This is a world
based on differences, at the same time aggressively denying and rejecting them.
Selenic observes the phenomena of otherness from an ethic perspective, trying to
solve human and social needs for conquering, not accepting someones qualities
of different and / or foreign. A sudden discovery during the encounter of entities
would create a space for a different understanding and tolerance with the rest of the
world as well as ourselves. Since the historical truth has the purpose to suffocate the
nature of otherness and neglect the sense of variation, Selenic in his novels opens
forms of narrative truths which in their co-relations question the tragedy of the
obliteration of differences and the right to differ. In certain situations the tragedy of
non accepted differences culminates in parts of the novel in which the hero has an
identity crisis, which he covers up by taking on someone elses identity.
