Equation for the wetted surface area of a HORIZONTAL vessel with 2:1 Ellipsoidal heads
2R
H
The Wetted surface area of a partially filled horizontal vessel is the sum of two components:
a) The partial wetted surface area of the cylinder and
b) Twice the partial wetted surface area of the heads.
In the oil and gas industry, horizontal vessels with 2:1 ellipsoidal heads are very common and the calculation specifically addresses a
horizontal vessel with 2:1 ellipsoidal head

AWet,Head = wetted surface area of one elliptical head, m2
F = Fractional liquid level = H / 2R
e = eccentricity of the elliptical vessel head = 0.866 for the common 2:1 ellipsoidal head
We will simplify the equation by substituting A and B for the factors "F-0.5" and "Sqrt (1+(12*(F-0.5)^2)"
