Chemistry
Mathayom 5
EIP Mathayom Course Outline
Second Semester
Subject: Chemistry Department: Science
Grade: Mathayom 5 Course Code: SC32223
Periods: 4 Credit: 2

Chemistry is an experimental science that combines academic study with the acquisition of
practical and investigational skills. It is called the central science, as chemical principles underpin
both the physical environment in which we live and all biological systems. Apart from being a
subject worthy of study in its own right, chemistry is a prerequisite for many other courses in
higher education, such as medicine, biological science and environmental science, and serves as
useful preparation for employment.

The course has been written in line with the chemistry curriculum from the Ministry of
Education. It is the fourth semester of a three year (6 Semesters) course designed to cover and
surpass all standards and benchmarks set out for upper Mathayom chemistry. The purpose of
the course is not only to impart basic knowledge of chemistry, but to allow the students to see
the world as a chemist and apply chemical knowledge in everyday applications. Additionally, the
course will instruct on the future of chemistry and open the students imaginations to the
possibility of contributing powerfully to the world through application of chemical principles.

Course Aims:

1. Develop a logical, analytical and inquisitive approach to laboratory based investigation

2. Follow the steps of the scientific method to construct, analyse and answer questions
3. Conduct investigations and research to test and prove hypotheses
4. Develop skills in manipulating formulae to make calculations for chemical processes.
5. Question previously understood scientific ideas and investigate modern scientific models
6. Apply knowledge of chemistry to everyday situations

The syllabus for the BCC chemistry course is divided into six semesters. The Chemistry data
booklet is an integral part of the syllabus and will be used in conjunction with the syllabus.
Students should use the data booklet during the course, and they will be issued with clean
copies of it for the examinations.
