ABSTRACT
The phenomenon that occurs in the community, there are still many people
who see mental retardation with bad vision. Someone who experience mental
retardation tend to be excluded from the environment. Their rejection is not only done
by other individuals around his residence, but some are not even welcome in his own
family. Regardless of the circumstances experienced, every child has the right to grow
and develop and to gain happiness, including those who are mental retardation
experience, such as getting a decent education. Based on data from Central of
Statistics of West Sumatera in 2010, children with mental retardation as many as 1665
people and as many as 935 of them are at school age (BPS West Sumatra, 2010).
Participants in this research are 6 mothers who have children with mental retardation.
In this research is a type of qualitative research conducted by interview with semi-
structured interview method. The selection of participants using purposive sampling
technique. The purpose of this research is to determine the perception of mother
about the educational needs for mental retardation From the results of interviews with
six participants can be concluded, that participants have a positive perception of
educational needs for mental retardation children. However, due to economic
limitations, the participants did not provide education for mental retardation children.
Participants say that if given the education of mental retardation children able to help
themselves and no longer depend on others.
