TheNationalBuildingCodeofIndia(NBC),acomprehensivebuildingCode,isa
nationalinstrumentprovidingguidelinesforregulatingthebuildingconstruction
activitiesacrossthecountry.ItservesasaModelCodeforadoptionbyallagencies
involvedinbuildingconstructionworksbetheyPublicWorksDepartments,other
governmentconstructiondepartments,localbodiesorprivateconstruction
agencies.TheCodemainlycontainsadministrativeregulations,development
controlrulesandgeneralbuildingrequirementsfiresafetyrequirements
stipulationsregardingmaterials,structuraldesignandconstruction(including
safety)andbuildingandplumbingservices.
TheCodewasfirstpublishedin1970attheinstanceofPlanningCommissionand
thenrevisedin1983.Thereafterthreemajoramendmentswereissued,twoin1987
andthethirdin1997.
Consideringaseriesoffurtherdevelopmentsinthefieldofbuildingconstruction
includingthelessonslearntintheaftermathofnumberofnaturalcalamitieslike
devastatingearthquakesandsupercycloneswitnessedbythecountry,aProjectfor
comprehensiverevisionofNBCwastakenupundertheaegisofNationalBuilding
CodeSectionalCommittee,CED46ofBISandits18expertPanelsinvolvingas
manyas400experts.AsaculminationoftheProject,therevisedNBChasnow
beenbroughtoutasNationalBuildingCodeofIndia2005(NBC2005).
ThecomprehensiveNBC2005contains11Partssomeofwhicharefurtherdivided
intoSectionstotalling26chapters(seeAnnex1).Thesalientfeaturesoftherevised
NBC(seeAnnex2)include,apartfromotherchangesmade,thechangesspecially
inregardtofurtherenhancingourresponsetomeetthechallengesposedbynatural
calamitiesandreflectingthestateoftheartandcontemporaryapplicable
internationalpractices.
TheCodehasbeenpublishedinonefullvolumecontainingallthePartsand
Sections.Besides,fiveseparategroupstocaterlargelytotheinterest/agency
dealingwithdifferentaspectsofbuildingactivityhavealsobeenpublishedas
