TO UPR STUDENTS INTERESTED IN FIELD ENVIRONMENTAL BIOLOGY

Do you want the experience of conducting your own filed research in environmental biology
At a pristine site in the northern United States?

The University of Notre Dame Environmental Research Center (UNDERC) is now accepting applications for the summer
2018 course, Practicum in Field Environmental Biology. Four spots in this three-credit course have been reserved for
sophomores/juniors from the University of Puerto Rico system. Acceptance in the program includes tuition, housing, round
trip transportation between Puerto Rico and Notre Dame, and a $3500 stipend.

The purpose of the course is to promote an understanding of field-oriented environmental biology and how field research is
conducted. The program is a unique 10 week summer field environmental biology program at UNDERC-East, which is
located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the north-central United States. UNDERC-East encompasses more than 8000 acres
with abundant wildlife (including wolves, black bear, deer, and fisher) and includes lakes, streams, wetlands, and forest that
are relatively undisturbed.

Course modules include vertebrate ecology, invertebrate ecology, aquatic ecology and forest ecology with each providing
background information, field research exercises, and group research projects designed by the class. Five or more weeks are
spent by each student designing and conducting their own field research project under direction of faculty or graduate
students. Therefore, there also is training in experimental design, data collection, data analysis and presentation of research
results. The culmination of each students research is a written research report and seminar presentation. Projects have
ranged from fish, insect and mammal behavior and ecology to forest, lake and stream ecosystem ecology to local Native
American ecosystem use.

Applications and information can be obtained from Dr. Michael Cramer, Assistant Director (underc@nd.edu) as well as our
website http://underc.nd.edu. Completed applications must be received by Friday, November 17, 2017 and notification of
acceptance into the program will be provided by Monday, December 1, 2017.

Acceptance to the program is competitive, based on previous academic performance, and requires a one-page, single-spaced
essay on your professional goals and interests. Preference will be given to students intending to pursue a career in
environmental biology. The East course will take place from May 21 to July 27, 2018.

I look forward to your participation,
