Lesson Plan Format: Social Studies

Teacher: Ms. Siegler Grade Level: 1st Grade

I. Content and Standards:

a. Standard - 5.3.1.E Identify situations in the school or community when it
is beneficial to have an elected official represent the people.
II. Prerequisites:
a. Students must know that we vote for President.
III. Essential Questions:
a. What is voting?
b. What are the steps that need to be taken in order to vote?
IV. Instructional Objective:
a. SWBAT understand the definition of voting
b. SWBAT understand what voting looks like

V. Instructional Procedures -These two goals clearly communicate the outcomes for my
lesson. I explain what I want my students to be able to do by
the end of my lesson clearly and concisely. The goals are
a. Read a book, Election Day, at the rug, on voting and review what voting is stated during the lesson.

the activity to students.

-I use an engaging book to introduce the lesson. The story
gives a visual for what it looks like to vote. Reading the book
then allows students to ask questions and make comments
about voting, which leads to students interest in the topic.

c. Ask students to think about which cookie they will vote for and why. Have

students get into pairs to tell each other which cookie they will vote for

and why. A few pairs will share out to the class.
d. Students will go to their seats and will each get a ballot and vote for which
one they would prefer today. Then they will place their ballot into a

-I have students not only answer the question of which
cookie they will choose but why they will choose that
cookie. This enables students to think even further into their
decision and why they made their decision.

e. Students will come back to the rug and we will count the total votes and

complete online worksheet where votes are tallied on the Smart Board.
 f. Whichever cookie has the most votes will be eaten today. Students will

return to their seats and eat the wining cookie!

g. While students are eating their cookie, or when they finish, students will

draw a picture of what it means to vote.

VIII. VII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities: -This assessment tests whether each student can meet the
learning objective: What is the definition of voting?
a. Visuals will be used to ensure that ELL students understand the
terminology used in the lesson. I will point to objects that I am talking
about and point to where we are in our worksheet. The ballot has pictures
