Contents: This guideline defines internal standard values for the permissible leakage rate
of throttle valves.
1 General
Special literature and standards do not provide any reference values for the permissible leakages
of large spherical valves and butterfly valves, when they are used as shut-off devices in the water-
ways of hydroelectric plants.
DIN 3230 / Part 3 indeed defines permissible leakage rates for Armatures", however, due to
reasons of
In addition it uses exclusively the nominal width DN as parameter, which, especially in case of
large nominal widths with higher nominal pressures, leads to unrealistically small, non-required
and also scarcely realisable leakage rates.
2 Reference Values
For new shut-off devices the leakage rate is calculated as follows:

The above values should be achievable with our standard designs without any problems.
3 Guarantees
In the normal cases the values as per 2. can also be used as guarantee values. In case
compelling reasons (e.g. customer specifications, imposition of penalty, evaluation etc.) demand
the guarantee of smaller leakage rates, the K-values for the types I and II can be reduced up to
approx 60%.
For larger reductions as also for a reduction of the values for the types III and IV, additional
design measures (sealing arrangement, reduction of deformations or bendings, ...) can be
adopted.
