Damage to Diesel Generator Cooling Fresh Water Pump

Technical committee
Ship type Oil tanker
Date of build March 31, 1994
Navigation route Worldwide
Trouble machinery
Category Diesel generator
Name Cooling fresh water pump
Type 6DL-24
Maker DAIHATSU
Date of trouble October 22, 2007

1. Circumstances of damage
While the ship was under way, the cooling water low pressure alarm sounded in the diesel generator. Since
the cooling water temperature trip device began to operate soon after, the stand-by generator unit
automatically started up and restored the power supply.
The crew inspected the generator and found damage to the following:
Generator-connected CFW pump bearing
Generator-connected CFW pump bearing holder
Generator-connected CFW pump gear
Generator-connected LO pump gear
Crank shaft-connected auxiliary machinery drive gear

2. Probable causes
The cooling fresh water pump in question had been subjected to an overhaul on April 25, 2007. During the
current overhaul, it was found that the bearing case had contained sufficient LO and no water. Nevertheless,
only the gear-side bearing was damaged. Given this fact, we assume that the bearing damage resulted from
wear and degradation of the cushion spring on the drive shaft side, which protects the crank shaft against
unbalanced rotation.
Because the ship had no records of replacing the gear-side bearing during the previous maintenance,
extended use of the bearing without replacement could also have been the cause.

3. Action and countermeasures taken

We replaced the damaged D/G components, the drive gear cushion spring and seat.
