Recreating Spaces: Language, Culture and Gender Issues
Language, Culture and Gender have always been a sensitive and volatile issues.
Language is the primary vehicle of culture and all forms of communication (verbal
and non-verbal) are involved in the creation of cultural characteristics. The
structure of a language determines the way in which speakers of that language
view the world or, as a weaker view, the structure does not determine the
Weltanschauung. But it is still extremely influential in predisposing speakers of a
language toward adopting their world-view. The idea that language, to a
considerable extent, determines the way we think about the world around us is
known as linguistic determinism, with strong determinism stating that language
actually determines thought, and weak determinism implying that our thought is
merely influenced by our language.

Linguistique tiquette, which has also been studied for its possible influence on
user perceptions, appears to be a shaper of both communicative contexts as well
as human relationships. Though linguistic norms differ between cultures,
demonstrating respect towards others is an important function of language. And,
although the perceptions of listeners appear to be affected by this language, a
relationship claiming that language determines this type of thought remains in
question. While culture is a set of distinctive, spiritual, material, intellectual and
emotional features of the society of a special group, it encompasses, in addition to
art and literature, life styles, ways of living together, value systems, traditions, and
beliefs inter alias. Language is the most useful and most enduring of a peoples
cultural heritage. Since language and culture have been intricately woven together,
the concept of gender which has become a contentious one in recent times had
been linked, thus resulting in a wider line of argument. Without language, the
preservation of cultural characteristics would have been unthinkable since culture
is a product of social interaction.

The insightful contributions of scholars in the fields of literature and cultural

studies have fore grounded gender as a primary issue of intellectual enquiry, thus
paving way for inter disciplinary in the academy. Critical studies on gender issues
across cultures may provide a better way of framing, and enquiring into the core
issues about ideology, social formation, political movements and shifts in
perception of embodiment and community. Literary works on gender have evolved
into particularly rich source of exploring this important aspect of society. These
literary and cultural studies on emerging gender issues respond creatively and
dynamically to all the cultural forms from an interdisciplinary approach involving
social science, media, gay, lesbian, and queer studies. The focus on the gender
issues has enabled creative ways of thinking about how the transgendered body is
inhabited, and the practices that promise to radically destabilize the meaning of
the social genders. In this sense gender becomes a genre that implies a set of
conditions given by a text. It is contingent not only on the individual text but on
the individual reading moment, avoiding recourse to a universal or a prescriptive
norm. Literary works and cultural studies on the gender aspects of globalization
leading to the feminization of labor, the social status of women in the hierarchical
social system especially in Indian subcontinent, and the cultural stereotyping of
gender in many corners of the world have been documented and the productive
nature of gender variance and its impact upon the way gender issues are being
understood and lived.

With this backdrop, the conference shall address the endless varieties of aspects of
Language, Culture and Gender Issues.
This conference, it is hoped, will serve an interdisciplinary platform for the
academically intellectual discussions focusing the central themes of the
conference.
