SECTOR INFORMATIONi
The Indian tourism and hospitality industry has emerged as one of the key major of growth
among the services sector in India. Tourism in India has the rich cultural and historical heritage,
best services and places of natural beauty spread across the country. Tourism is also a
potentially large employment generator besides being a significant source of foreign exchange
for the country. The industry is expected to generate 13.45 million jobs across sub-segments
such as Restaurants (10.49 million jobs), Hotels (2.3 million jobs) and Travel Agents/Tour
Operators (0.66 million). The Ministry of Tourism plans to help the industry meet the increasing
demand of skilled and trained manpower by providing hospitality education to students as well
as certifying and upgrading skills of existing service providers. India has moved up 13 positions
to 52nd rank from 65th in Tourism & Travel competitive index.
SECTOR SIZEiii
Indias rising middle class and increasing incomes has continued to support the growth of
domestic and outbound tourism. As per Ministry of Tourism, foreign tourists arrival (FTAs) on
e-tourist visa increased 56.6 per cent year-on-year in December 2016. In 2016, foreign tourist
arrivals on e-visas more than doubled to 10,79,696 from 4, 45,300 in 2015, partly because the
e-visa facility was extended to 161 countries from 113 previously India is expected to move up
five spots to be ranked among the top five business travel market globally by 2030, as business
travel spending in the country is expected to treble until 2030 from US$ 30 billion in 2015.
International hotel chains will likely increase their expansion and investment plans in India, and
are expected to account for 50 per cent share in the Indian hospitality industry by 2022, from
the current 44 per cent. It increases due to increases tourism in India because of its ancient
places and culture.

Tata opened the Taj hotel. According to a story he decided to open the hotel after an incident
involving racial discrimination at the Watson's Hotel in Mumbai, where he was refused entry as
the hotel permitted only Europeans Hotels which accepted only European guests were very
common across British India. Now it is leading Hotel in India.

Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL),branded as Taj Hotels Palaces Resorts Safaris is a chain of
hotels and resorts headquartered at Express Towers, Nariman Point in Mumbai, which was
incorporated by the founder of the Tata Group, Jamsetji Tata, in the year 1903.This company is
a part of the Tata group, one of India's largest business conglomerates. As of 2017, Taj Group
operates a total of 100 hotels, out of which it has 83 hotels across India and 16 hotels in the UK,
USA, Zambia, South Africa, Maldives, Malaysia, Bhutan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and the U.A.E. ,and
employed over 13000 people in the year 2010.

RAKESH SARNA, Managing Director & Chief Executive Officer Mr. Rakesh Sarna, joined Indian
Hotels Company Limited as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer on 1st September,
2014. Mr. Sarna brings over three decades of experience across various leadership roles with
Hyatt Hotels Corporation. He was the Group President - Americas with a portfolio of 146 Full
Service hotels, 233 Select Service hotels and 15 Vacation Ownership facilities across North
America, the Caribbean and Latin America with around 40,000 employees. In this role, Mr.
Sarna was responsible for the development and management of all owned, managed and
franchised hotels across all Hyatt brands.

Resort & Spa in Maldives on ranks 34 and 98, respectively, in the list of 100 Best Hotels &
Resorts. Conde Nast Traveler also ranked the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai on number 13 in the
list of Gold Standard Hotels, in 2014.
The Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and the Oberoi Trident, were among the four locations targeted.
Six explosions were reported at the Taj hotel one in the lobby, two in the elevators, three in the
restaurant and one at the Oberoi Trident. At the Taj, firefighters rescued 200 hostages from
windows using ladders during the first night. CNN initially reported on the morning of 27
November 2008 that the hostage situation at the Taj Hotel had been resolved and quoted the
police chief of Maharashtra stating that all hostages were freed however, it was learned later
that day that there were still two attackers holding hostages, including foreigners, in the Taj
Hotel.
