Sherlock Holmes and his world.

We hope you like it and learn some things about this legendary character in English
literature.

1. A Study in Scarlet was the first story to feature the mystery-solving Sherlock
Holmes character. Conan Doyle was paid 25 pounds for it. The author wrote
the story at age 27. It took him three weeks to finish it.

2. Conan Doyle based much of Holmes on one of his professors, Dr. Joseph
Bell. He was said to have based Holmess nemesis, Professor James
Moriarty, on a fellow named Adam Worth.

3. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle didn't hate Sherlock Holmes. But he didn't love him
too much either. He always felt Sherlock Holmes was nice as a
money-spinner, but there were deeper pursuits he'd rather apply his mind to.
In fact, Conan Doyle killed off Holmes at the end of The Memoirs of Sherlock
Holmes because he had had enough of him. He was like: Yeah, the stories
are great, but that's about it. Protests, tons of fan mail (including a letter that
said, 'You Brute') and quite some money - finally convinced Conan Doyle to
bring Holmes back to life in The Return of Sherlock Holmes.

4. Sherlock Holmes didnt wear a deerstalker. Much. The famous image of

Holmes wearing a deerstalker hat is a product of the celebrated images which
accompanied the short stories, which appeared in the Strandmagazine from
1891 (beginning with the wonderful story A Scandal in Bohemia). It is when
the stories began to appear that Sherlock Holmes became a worldwide
sensation. Sidney Paget, who drew the illustrations, had Holmes wearing a
deerstalker when the detective went into the country to investigate mysteries
at country houses and in small rural villages, but most people think of the
detective as always donning the hat when off to investigate a case.

5. Holmes never says Elementary, my dear Watson.

Not in the canon of original Conan Doyle novels and stories. Holmes says
Elementary! and my dear Watson at various points, but the idea of putting
them together was a later meme, which possibly arose because it neatly
conveys Holmes effortless superiority to his dear friend and foil. The first
 recorded use of this exact phrase is actually in a P. G. Wodehouse novel of
1915, Psmith, Journalist.

6. The Sherlock Holmes Museum both is and isnt at 221B Baker Street.

Although the museum in London bears the official address 221B in line with
the celebrated address from the stories, the museums building lies between
237 and 241 Baker Street, making it physically if not officially at number
239.

7. Conan Doyle chose the name Sherlock in honour of Nottingham cricketers

Sherwin and Shacklock. Originally it was Sherringford Holmes. And Dr.
WatsonwasoriginallynamedOrmandSacker.

8.The Guinness Book of World Records offers an interesting piece of

Sherlock Holmes trivia.
Acording to The Guinness Book of World RecordsSherlock Holmes has
appeared in a total of 254 movies and TV shows and He's apparently been
depicted by at least 90 different actors.

9. Sherlock Holmes is the first popular figure to abuse cocaine and

morphine.

10. Sherlock Holmes has a male chauvinist character and considers women
as beings with intelligence lower than that of men.Thatmentalitychangesalittle

11. Although Sherlock Holmes never existed, he always received

correspondence from fans at his address 221 B Baker Street and letters are
still coming in today.
