Homa/Abhishekam

Schedule 2001/2002
Homa: A Homa, or fire offering, is a sacred ceremony in which
the Gods are offered oblations through the medium of fire according to
Vedic scriptural injunctions while special mantras are recited. A Homa
is performed during specific auspicious occasions for the benefit of the
entire world as well as the participants.
Abhishekam: An Abhishekam is a ceremony of ablutions and
symbolic offerings that include milk, honey, ghee, and other items. The
ablutions symbolize spiritual purification, and each of the offerings
represents fulfillment on every level. Throughout the abhishekam,
specific mantras are chanted to invoke blessings that uplift, protect and
spiritually benefit us.

Maha Sivaratri Rudra Homa
Ekadasavara Rudra Abhishekam
March 12, 2002
On March 12, 2002 on the occasion of the Maha Sivaratri
celebration, a very powerful Rudra Homa and Abhishekam will be
performed at Sri Karunamayi's ashram. The Rudra Homa is a very
powerful fire ceremony. The Ekadasavara Rudra Abhishekam is a
unique performance of the ceremonial bathing of the sacred Siva
Linga. The Maha Sivaratri Rudra Homa and Ekadasavara Rudra
Abhishekam will be performed in the presence of our Beloved
Amma, Sri Karunamayi, Bhagavathi Sri Sri Sri Vijayeswari Devi.

The Rudra Homa and Abhishekam are particularly auspicious

when performed on Maha Sivaratri. The influence of the Rudra
Homa is magnified when performed on Maha Sivaratri. The
Ekadasavara Rudra Abhishekam is a special abhishekam performed
11 times (Ekadasavara). During each recurrence of the Abhishekam,
a different ingredient is used to bathe the Lingam. These ingre-
dients include milk, yogurt, clarified butter (ghee), coconut water,
sugar cane juice, holy ash, Ganges water, pieces of fruits, cooked
rice and turmeric water. During each offering Rudra mantras are
chanted, according to scriptural injunctions, by Vedic priests.

Participating in the Maha Sivaratri Rudra Homa and Ekadasavara

Abhishekam brings many blessings. Amma has stated that
participating in this ceremony immediately gives one the grace of
Lord Siva, and imparts wealth, wisdom, peace, prosperity, virtue and
valor to the individual. This ceremony also removes any mental or
physical health problems.

The following stories illustrate the positive
influence of Homas/Abhishekas in our lives.
A few weeks before her wedding day a young devotee came to ask
Amma's blessings for her marriage. After a minute of silence Amma said She
would bless the marriage. Then Amma stated that the devotee's bridegroom was
facing a terrible fate and instructed her to have an Abhishekam performed on
behalf of her husband on the day of their wedding.
This devotee was very sincere and carefully followed Amma's instructions.
She arranged for a very elaborate Abhishekam which was performed as Amma
had advised on her wedding day. The wedding was happily concluded and
everything went well for the newlyweds during the following month.
After one month, her husband was riding in the front seat of a car with
two friends in the back seat when disaster struck. A car wreck ensued that
destroyed the car and killed the driver and his friends in the back seat. In spite
of the destruction of the car and the deaths of the other passengers he was
blessed to walk away from the accident without the slightest injury.
The protection and blessings of the Abhishekam saved him from the fate
he was facing. Whatever obstacles we face in our lives, the blessings that accrue
from our spiritual practices such as homas, abhishekas, mantra japa and
meditation diminish these obstacles. Homas and abhishekas not only protect us
from untoward events but are known to bring spiritual upliftment and success
to all our endeavors.
Jai Karunamayi !

Mr. K K. Neelvarma is a businessman who lives and works in Madras

where he owns a factory. After years of enjoying a prosperous business, the
success of his company seemed to evaporate. He was forced to close his factory
and in addition to this hardship he was burdened with the prospect of a
damaging court case. Following a friend's suggestion he decided to come see
Sri Karunamayi and ask for Her blessings.
As it happened, the day he met Amma and received Her blessings was
also the first day of Navaratri. He decided to participate in the following day's
Navaratri homas. At the conclusion of the homa ceremonies he received the
homa prasadam, a silver locket, which he wore around his neck for protection.
Two weeks after meeting Amma and participating in the homas he
received a summons to appear in court for a hearing. To his surprise and great
relief, the court case that had worried him was settled without delay in his
favor. Soon after this his factory reopened.
Mr. K. K. Neelvarma is grateful for these blessings in his life. He feels
that Amma saved him and attributes the resolution of these overwhelming
difficulties in his life to the homa ceremonies he participated in.
